Forever rewrote the stats on 2,613 items, and level 30 is where testers started noticing

A tester logged into the level 30 build, found most of their gear rewritten, and asked what happened to itemization. The files show the scale: 2,613 items in Forever carry different stats from live Classic Era, and 267 of them are worn below level 33. Only twelve lose stat points overall. The rest gain armour, spell power, healing values, block chance or an equip effect, which is what makes old gear unrecognisable and turns dungeon loot rolls into arguments.

Forever rewrote the stats on 2,613 items, and level 30 is where testers started noticing

On October 2 a tester opened a thread with a simple complaint: they logged into the new build, most of their gear’s stats were rewritten, and then a pair of Stamina and Strength gloves with healing on them dropped in Blackfathom Deeps and the group spent the next few minutes arguing about who it belonged to.

The files explain why that keeps happening. WoW Forever carries 2,613 items whose stats differ from the live Classic Era client, and 267 of them can be worn below level 33 — which is exactly the band the beta just opened.

The datamine compares Forever against the live Classic client, not against the previous Forever build. It can show you how far an item has moved from 2004. It cannot tell you which of those moves arrived on October 1, which is the day testers say their equipped gear changed.

Almost nothing was nerfed

This is the part that surprised us. Of those 267 low-level items, only twelve come out with fewer stat points than their Classic versions, and the losses are tiny: a point of Agility off Cape of the Brotherhood, a point of Stamina off Blackened Defias Armor, two points off Silverlaine’s Family Seal.

The largest single loss is Rod of the Sleepwalker, which drops 11 Intellect and 10 Spirit for a flat 11 Spirit — and gains an equip effect that cuts the chance for Sleep effects to land on you by 5%. That trade is the whole design in one item.

What the other 255 gained

Armour, in large amounts. Green Iron Hauberk picks up 120 armour on top of its Strength and Stamina. Shield of Thorsen gains 50. Sergeant’s Cape and Cloak gain 40 each. Several waist and feet pieces gain 30 to 60.

Spell power instead of Intellect and Spirit. Tree Bark Jacket traded 10 Intellect and 6 Stamina for 13 Spell Power and 60 armour. Green Woolen Robe went from a three-stat Classic block to Intellect and Spell Power. Witching Stave swapped 8 Intellect for Intellect, Stamina, shadow resistance and 27 shadow spell damage.

Healing as a number on the item. Death Speaker Scepter had a single point of Spirit in Classic. In Forever it carries 68 healing, 12 health per 5 seconds and 28 shadow spell damage. Holy Shroud gained 33 healing. Crest of Elucidation, one of the library rewards, now states its healing outright.

Block and crit on shields. Ironbark Shield gains 14 critical strike, Optomatic Deflector gains 10 block, Vigilant Buckler gains 5, and Seedcloud Buckler drops Intellect and Spirit for spell power and nature resistance. This is the change the thread’s author ran into: a shield that used to carry three stats now carries one stat and a block value, which to a Classic player reads as the item being gutted even when the item is stronger at its job.

Effects on gear that never had any. Martyr’s Chain swaps Spirit for Stamina and now deals 420 Holy damage to everything near you when you die. Baron’s Scepter regenerates health for your party. Kam’s Walking Stick shortens movement-impairing effects by 10%. Feline Mantle reduces falling damage. Defiler’s and Highlander’s boots increase run speed. Verigan’s Fist, the paladin quest mace, gives up 2 Spirit and 2 Stamina and gains a chance to ignite its target for Holy damage.

Why it causes fights in dungeons

Classic’s loot etiquette was built on reading a stat block at a glance: Intellect and Spirit meant healer, Agility meant rogue or hunter. Forever breaks that shorthand on purpose. A plate glove with Strength, Stamina and a healing value is a paladin or a shaman piece, and it looks like a tank piece to everyone else in the group.

That is a real cost, and the thread shows it landing on actual groups rather than on spreadsheets. The counter-argument in the same thread is the honest one: it is a beta, and the point of handing testers rewritten items is to find out whether the rewrite works.

What to check before you roll

  • Read the whole tooltip, not the shape of it. The stat that decides the item is often the rating at the bottom.
  • Expect armour to be higher than you remember on mail and plate levelling pieces, which changes what a tank should wear in the 20s.
  • Do not assume a Classic best-in-slot list still applies. Our gear pages and dungeon pages are being checked against the current files rather than against 1.12.

Build 1.60.1.70205, the one live now, arrived with no table changes at all against the previous build, so none of this moved in the last two days.
