WoW Forever Beta Crash Fixes
If the beta freezes your Mac when you click Enter World, or your AMD driver crashes at the end of a loading screen, the cause is almost always one graphics setting:Secondary Lighting. Set it to Fair at the character select screen and most players get straight in.

The 30-second fix
- 1. Stop at the character select screen. Do not enter the world yet.
- 2. Open the game menu → System → Graphics.
- 3. Set Secondary Lighting to Fair.
- 4. Apply, then enter the world.
Secondary Lighting is part of the new lighting system that sets Forever apart from Classic. On a fresh install the client picks a high preset that turns it up, which is why so many players hit this on their first login.
Mac freezes completely when you click Enter World
MacThe character screen loads, but when you enter the world the loading bar fills and the whole Mac locks up. Some players still hear the zone music and the intro narration while the screen stays frozen, and many had to hold the power button to restart.
Reported on: Apple silicon across the range, including M2 Pro, M4 and M5 machines and a Mac Studio, on current macOS versions. Turning Enhanced models on or off makes no difference.
What to change
- Stay on the character select screen — do not enter the world yet.
- Open the menu and go to System → Graphics.
- Set Secondary Lighting to Fair.
- Apply the setting, then enter the world.
On a fresh install the game picks a high preset, which sets Secondary Lighting to High. At that setting the GPU hangs on Enter World and macOS shuts down its window server after about 90 seconds. Most players got in straight away after dropping it to Fair, and several could raise every other setting to maximum as long as Secondary Lighting stayed there. If you are still stuck, lower the overall graphics quality by one or two steps, enter the world, then raise the settings again.

Mac colour corruption, banding or pitch-black shadows
MacFair lighting got you into the world, but the game looks wrong: colours smear and build up frame by frame, hard horizontal bands run across tree trunks and walls, or every shadow renders pure black.
Reported on: Apple silicon Macs on the same build. These are four bugs separate from the Enter World freeze, each tied to its own graphics setting.
What to change
- Turn Triple Buffering off — it causes colour corruption that builds up frame by frame.
- Turn Advanced Work Submit off — it triggers the same corruption on its own.
- Turn Optional GPU Features off — it causes hard horizontal bands across tree trunks and walls.
- Set Shadow Quality to Low — above Low, shadows render pure black.
- Keep Secondary Lighting at Fair.
This is why Mac players disagree about which fix works: there is not one bug but at least five, each tested on its own. With those five settings in place, the player who mapped them runs everything else, including textures, view distance and SSAO, at maximum.

AMD graphics driver crashes at the end of a loading screen
WindowsThe driver crashes as a loading screen finishes, sometimes with a memory access violation.
Reported on: Reported on Radeon RX 9060 XT and RX 7800 XT cards on Windows.
What to change
- Set Secondary Lighting to Fair.
- Set Shadow Quality to Fair.
- Turn Optional GPU Features off.
- Drop anything still on Ultra to High.
The players who fixed it used all four changes together. Update your Radeon driver first — it costs nothing and rules out a driver bug already patched by AMD.

Stuttering or crashes on Linux through Steam
LinuxExtreme stuttering, or the same crash Windows and Mac players hit on loading screens.
Reported on: Reported by players running the beta client through Steam on Linux.
What to change
- Set Secondary Lighting to Fair.
- If it runs smoothly, try one step above Fair — one player reports that level is still playable.
Report: Linux extreme stuttering ()
Constant lag or network timeouts in Europe
All platformsSpell batching-style delays, rubber-banding and disconnects that look like a client problem but follow the route to the server.
Reported on: EU players on the beta, which runs on US realms.
What to change
- Check whether your graphics settings are involved at all: if the game only stutters in busy zones, the fixes above may help.
- If your latency is high everywhere, it is the route to the US beta realms, not your machine.
The beta has no EU realms, so nothing in your settings fixes the distance. Blizzard has not said whether EU beta realms are coming.

Mac: five settings, five separate bugs
Mac players disagree about which fix works because there is not one bug but at least five, each tied to its own graphics setting and each tested on its own. If Fair lighting got you into the world but the game looks green, banded or pitch dark, one of the other four is the cause.
| Setting | What goes wrong | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Secondary Lighting | Above Fair: crash or full system freeze on Enter World | Fair |
| Triple Buffering | On: colour corruption that builds up frame by frame | Off |
| Advanced Work Submit | On: the same colour corruption, triggered separately | Off |
| Optional GPU Features | On: hard horizontal bands across tree trunks and walls | Off |
| Shadow Quality | Above Low: shadows render pure black | Low |
With those five in place, the player who mapped them runs everything else — textures, view distance and SSAO — at maximum.
What Blizzard has said
Nothing about these crashes yet. The only staff post on the subject is theknown issues list from September 17, which does not mention Mac freezes or driver crashes, and the Mac thread is still not on it. Because the behaviour is so consistent, players expect a fix in a later beta build. Until then, change the setting before you enter the world.
Everything on this page comes from players in the official beta forums. Nothing here is an official fix, and none of it requires downloading anything: every change is a setting inside the game.

WoW Forever crash FAQ
Why does the WoW Forever beta freeze my Mac?
On a fresh install the client picks a high graphics preset, which sets Secondary Lighting to High. Player reports on build 1.60.1.69913 say the GPU hangs when you enter the world at that setting, and macOS shuts down its window server about 90 seconds later, which locks up the whole machine. Setting Secondary Lighting to Fair at the character select screen gets most players in.
Where is the Secondary Lighting setting?
At the character select screen, open the game menu and go to System → Graphics. Change it before you enter the world, because on affected machines the freeze happens during the Enter World loading screen.
Do I have to play on low settings?
No. Several players report they can run textures, view distance and SSAO at maximum as long as Secondary Lighting stays at Fair. On Macs, four other settings each cause their own visual bug, so check the table on this page before you turn things back up.
Has Blizzard fixed the Mac freeze and the AMD driver crash?
Not as of September 20, 2026. The only staff post on the subject is the known issues list from September 17, which does not mention Mac freezes or driver crashes. Everything on this page is a player workaround, not an official fix.
Will these crashes still happen at launch on November 4?
Unknown. The reports are from the beta client, and Blizzard has weeks of beta builds left to change the lighting system. We update this page as new builds land and as Blizzard responds.
