Best Leveling Class in WoW Forever

WoW Forever has not launched and changes class talents, so no one can rank its classes for leveling yet. This page keeps the three kinds of evidence apart: what players here vote for, how the classes leveled in Classic 1.12, and what Blizzard and the talent data say is different.

Community signal

Live community data

Computed live from the leveling guides players published on this site: solo, dungeon and group leveling guides per class and spec, the helpful and not-helpful votes they received, and how often each class appears in a group leveling guide's party. The score is a confidence score over the votes (the lower bound of the Wilson interval), so many positive votes beat one lucky vote. It is not an editorial ranking.

Not enough votes for a ranking yet.

77 leveling guides have 0 votes so far. WoW Forever is pre-launch, so the table below follows guide counts until players have leveled and voted. Rate the guides you use or write one for your class.

Classic 1.12 reference tier list

Unconfirmed

Classic 1.12 reference — may change in WoW Forever. These tiers describe solo leveling speed, safety and ease in the original Classic rules, summarized in our own words from the sources listed below. WoW Forever changes talents for every class, so a class can move up or down.

SFast and safe

  • Hunter

The easiest fast solo leveler in Classic: the pet takes the hits while you shoot.

    • Pet tank
    • Little downtime
    • Travel speed
    • Escapes
    Why this tier

    Strengths

    • A tanking pet from level 10 means most damage lands on the pet, not on you, so you rarely stop to eat.
    • Pet power follows character level rather than gear, so poor equipment slows a Hunter less than most classes.
    • Ranged damage while moving lets you kite enemies you could not beat face to face.
    • Aspect of the Cheetah at level 20 speeds up travel before your first mount.

    Weaknesses

    • You have to keep the pet fed and healed with Mend Pet.
    • Enemies that get past the pet are dangerous at close range.

  • Mage

The fastest killer of groups of enemies, if you learn to control the pull.

    • AoE pulls
    • Little downtime
    • Escapes
    Why this tier

    Strengths

    • Frost AoE grinding (Blizzard and its improved talents) kills several enemies per pull, which no other class matches.
    • Roots, slows and freezes keep enemies away from a cloth-wearing caster.
    • Needs little gear to work, although Intellect lets you cast longer before drinking.

    Weaknesses

    • AoE pulls punish mistakes and need uncontested spots with enough enemies.
    • Takes more practice than a Hunter; single-target Frost is safe but noticeably slower.

AStrong, with one clear weakness

  • Warlock

A pet tank, strong damage over time and Fear, held back by resource management.

    • Pet tank
    • Self-heals
    • Escapes
    Why this tier

    Strengths

    • The Voidwalker is an on-demand tank, and its Sacrifice shield saves bad pulls.
    • Damage-over-time spells handle more than one enemy at a time.
    • Fear and Healthstones give you answers when a fight goes wrong.

    Weaknesses

    • Soul Shards, health and mana all need watching; Life Tap trades health for mana.
    • Benefits a lot from Stamina, Intellect and spell hit on gear.

    Sources: Icy Veins

  • Paladin

The safest melee class, and slow to kill things.

    • Self-heals
    • Mail / plate
    Why this tier

    Strengths

    • Heals itself in every spec, and wears mail and later plate armor.
    • One of the best duo partners thanks to healing and buffs from early levels.
    • Handles almost any situation without needing a pet or perfect play.

    Weaknesses

    • Among the slowest kill speeds in Classic: damage comes mostly from auto-attacks and Seals.

    Sources: Icy Veins

  • Rogue

Kills quickly and escapes well, but has no way to heal itself.

    • Escapes
    • Gear-dependent
    • Rest-heavy
    Why this tier

    Strengths

    • One of the fastest single-target kill speeds of any class.
    • Stealth lets you skip enemies and move through dangerous areas.
    • Evasion, stuns and a spell interrupt get you out of trouble.

    Weaknesses

    • No self-heal and leather armor mean eating or bandaging after hard fights.
    • Many abilities scale with weapon damage, so weapon upgrades matter a lot.

BSteady, but slower or harder

  • Druid

The most flexible class, with slower kills and mana to manage between forms.

    • Self-heals
    • Travel speed
    • Escapes
    Why this tier

    Strengths

    • Cat, Bear and caster forms plus Entangling Roots let you handle fights other classes cannot.
    • Travel Form from level 30 increases outdoor movement speed by 40%, a big saving before a mount.
    • Relies less on gear than the other melee options.

    Weaknesses

    • Shifting out of form to heal can leave you without the mana to shift back.
    • Kills more slowly than most classes and takes time to master.

    Sources: Icy Veins, Warcraft Wiki

  • Priest

Durable caster with shields and heals, but kills slowly and drinks often.

    • Self-heals
    • Rest-heavy
    Why this tier

    Strengths

    • Power Word: Shield and self-heals make most single pulls safe.
    • Shadow talents and a wand carry most of the damage while leveling.

    Weaknesses

    • Low kill speed compared with the classes above.
    • Mana runs out quickly, so expect to rest between pulls.

    Sources: Icy Veins

  • Shaman

Good damage and self-healing, with no emergency button when a pull goes wrong.

    • Self-heals
    Why this tier

    Strengths

    • Solid damage, efficient self-heals and good durability.
    • Not very gear-dependent, though a weapon that gets the most out of Flametongue Weapon raises kill speed noticeably.
    • Totem buffs make the Shaman strong in groups.

    Weaknesses

    • Lacks a true emergency cooldown, so pulling too many enemies is especially dangerous.

    Sources: Icy Veins

CSlow and risky alone

  • Warrior

The hardest class to level alone; a healing partner covers its biggest weakness.

    • Mail / plate
    • Gear-dependent
    • Rest-heavy
    Why this tier

    Strengths

    • Scales very well with a strong two-handed weapon.
    • Hamstring and Intimidating Shout help it disengage from fights that turn bad.

    Weaknesses

    • No self-heal: food, bandages and potions fill the gaps between fights.
    • The most gear-dependent class: Rage comes from hitting and being hit, so misses hurt.
    • Strong defensive cooldowns such as Shield Wall arrive late.

Leveling guides by class

Best leveling class FAQ

What is the best leveling class in WoW Forever?

Nobody knows yet: WoW Forever changes talents and has not launched, and there are not enough player votes on leveling guides here for a community ranking. In Classic 1.12, Hunter and Mage were the top solo leveling classes, and that is the best reference until real WoW Forever data exists.

What is the fastest leveling class?

In Classic 1.12, Mage was the fastest at killing groups of enemies through Frost AoE grinding, and Hunter was the fastest solo leveler for most players because its pet tanks and keeps downtime low. Rogues kill single targets quickly but have no self-heal. Whether this holds in WoW Forever has not been confirmed.

What is the easiest class to level?

In Classic 1.12, Hunter was the most forgiving fast leveler: the pet takes the damage and pet strength follows your level rather than your gear. Paladin was the safest melee class thanks to self-heals and heavy armor, though it kills slowly. Warrior was the hardest to level alone.

Does WoW Forever change how classes level?

Partly. The imported talent data marks new and changed talents for every class, and community reports from the BlizzCon demo list Legacy perks in an Adventure tree aimed at leveling and travel. Blizzard has officially confirmed account-wide Legacy Points with a 16-point spend cap per character. No class leveling speed or balance changes have been announced.
