Overview

Level 60 · Arcane Mage in battlegrounds and world PvP.

Arcane PvP is the classic Presence of Mind burst build updated for WoW Forever. You still combine Presence of Mind and Arcane Power for an instant big spell, but Arcane Blast stacks now raise the damage of the Frostbolt you finish with, and Missile Barrage can turn a Frostbolt into free, fast Arcane Missiles. The Frost half keeps the survival tools every PvP mage needs: Improved Frost Nova, Frostbite, Ice Block and Shatter.

Your role in a fight

Your job is to delete a key target when your team calls it, then survive. In battlegrounds, wait for a healer or flag carrier to be isolated, open with Arcane Power and a Presence of Mind spell, and silence the healer with Improved Counterspell. In world PvP, Arcane is strong against a single enemy caster.

Darkspear Islands

Blizzard’s Darkspear Islands battleground is announced as 15 vs 15 with control points and Arathi Basin-style flag captures and defense. An Arcane Mage is useful for retaking a point quickly: arrive with your team, silence the defending healer and burst the player standing on the flag. Arcane Explosion also reveals stealthed defenders waiting near a point. The layout is not known yet.

Honor and ranks: WoW Forever is reported to bring a 14-rank Honor track, earned from battlegrounds and PvP content. Thresholds, weekly caps and decay are not announced; see the PvP and honor hub for what is confirmed.

Strengths

  • Instant burst: Presence of Mind makes any mage spell under 10 sec instant, with Arcane Power adding 30% damage.
  • Caster lockdown: Improved Counterspell silences for 4 sec.
  • Arcane Resilience and Magic Absorption make you tougher against both melee and casters than other mage builds.
  • Frost tools for defense: Frost Nova every 21 sec, Frostbite freezes and Ice Block.

Weak points

  • Long cooldowns: when Arcane Power and Presence of Mind are down, your damage is lower than Frost or Fire.
  • Mana: the burst costs a lot, and a failed burst leaves you with little to fight on.
  • Weak AoE control compared to a full Frost build.
  • Untested: Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage in PvP cannot be tried at level 60 until the beta or release allows it.

Level 60 PvP talent build

Arcane 31 / Fire 0 / Frost 20, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.

Arcane (31)

  • Arcane Focus 2/5 — +2% Arcane hit for Polymorph, Counterspell and Arcane Blast.
  • Improved Channeling 3/5 — A 60% chance at 3/5 that damage does not interrupt the Arcane Missiles from a Missile Barrage proc.
  • Magic Absorption 2/2 — +20 resistances against casters and mana back on full resists.
  • Arcane Concentration 5/5 — Free spells during long fights; a Clearcasting Arcane Blast costs nothing at any stack.
  • Arcane Resilience 2/2 — Armor from Intellect, which Arcane Mind raises further.
  • Arcane Blast 1/1 — A fast cast whose stacks raise the damage of your next other spell; one or two stacks before Frostbolt is a burst setup.
  • Improved Counterspell 2/2 — A 4 sec silence on top of the interrupt: the talent that shuts down healers.
  • Arcane Meditation 3/3 — Regeneration while casting, because you rarely get a moment to drink in a battleground.
  • Missile Barrage 1/1 — Frostbolt and Arcane Blast can make Arcane Missiles free and twice as fast, which is extra instant-feeling damage.
  • Presence of Mind 1/1 — Your next mage spell under 10 sec is instant: a surprise Polymorph, Frostbolt or Arcane Blast.
  • Arcane Mind 5/5 — +10% Intellect and bigger Arcane crits.
  • Arcane Instability 3/3 — +3% spell damage and crit for every spell in your burst.
  • Arcane Power 1/1 — 30% more damage for 15 sec. Pair it with Presence of Mind and Eureka! for the kill.

Frost (20)

  • Frost Warding 2/2 — Stronger Ice Armor and a chance for Frost Ward to reflect enemy Frost spells.
  • Elemental Precision 3/5 — +3% Frost and Fire hit so Frostbolt and Frost Nova land.
  • Permafrost 3/3 — Chills last longer and slow harder.
  • Improved Frost Nova 2/2 — Shorter Frost Nova cooldown, your main defense against melee.
  • Frostbite 3/3 — Free freezes from chills, which set up Shatter.
  • Piercing Ice 1/3 — One point of +2% Frost damage that opens the Ice Block row.
  • Ice Lance 1/1 — Instant damage against frozen targets while you kite.
  • Ice Block 1/1 — Immunity for 10 sec when a burst turns on you.
  • Shatter 4/5 — +40% crit chance on frozen targets at 4/5, so a Presence of Mind Frostbolt on a frozen target very likely crits.

Key abilities

  • Presence of Mind + Arcane Power: an instant Frostbolt or Arcane Blast at 30% more damage; with Frost Nova first, Shatter makes it likely to crit.
  • Improved Counterspell: interrupt and 4 sec silence on the healer before you commit.
  • Polymorph: a Presence of Mind Polymorph removes a second attacker at once.
  • Arcane Explosion: instant area damage that reveals stealthed rogues and druids near a flag or point.
  • Blink, Frost Nova and Ice Block: your escape chain after the burst.
  • Eureka!: halves the cost of your burst spells.

Matchups

  • Priests and paladins · Counterspell the heal, then burst. Divine Shield and Blessing of Protection waste Arcane Power, so bait them first.
  • Warlocks · Counterspell Fear, dispel curses with Remove Lesser Curse and burst during their casts.
  • Rogues · Arcane Explosion and Frost Nova break their opener pattern; Arcane Resilience’s armor helps.
  • Warriors · kite with Frost Nova and Blink; burst only when they are rooted and away from their healer.
  • Hunters · close the distance into their dead zone or break line of sight; Viper Sting drains mana, which hurts a burst build most.
  • Druids · shapeshifting breaks your slows, so burst while they are in caster form healing and Counterspell the heal.

Resources and cooldowns

Presence of Mind and Arcane Power are your burst cooldowns; use them together and do not waste Arcane Power on a target that is about to be healed or become immune. Arcane Power raises mana costs by 30%, so a full burst window drains a lot of mana. Keep Ice Block and Blink ready after the burst, because you will be the enemy team’s next target.

Gear

This site’s beta datamine has no mage PvP set yet, so how Forever’s honor track rewards mages is unannounced. A burst build lives or dies by its cooldown window, so gear for Stamina first to survive until Presence of Mind and Arcane Power are ready, then spell damage and hit so Polymorph and Counterspell land. Intellect is worth more here than for Frost because Arcane Mind raises it and Arcane Power raises every spell’s cost. The Tier 1 Manaflare Regalia 3-piece bonus shortens Counterspell by 5 sec.

Consumables and engineering

  • Major Mana Potion right after a burst window, so a failed kill does not leave you empty.
  • Free Action Potion against stuns that would waste Arcane Power.
  • Swiftness Potion to reach a point or escape after the burst.
  • Engineering: nets and bombs cover the gap while Frost Nova is on cooldown.

Tips

  • Arcane Explosion around your flag carrier catches stealthed attackers before they open.
