Overview
Level 60 · Fire Mage in battlegrounds and world PvP.
Fire in PvP is about killing a target before its healer reacts. Impact stuns, Blast Wave dazes and Fire Blast bursts, and Combustion guarantees a crit streak when you commit. The Frost half of this build gives you Frost Nova, Frostbite freezes and Ice Block, and a few Shatter points, because a frozen target that takes a Fire Blast crit plus Ignite goes down very quickly.
Your role in a fight
In battlegrounds, play as a burst damage dealer behind your front line: pick targets that are already under pressure, Blast Wave melee who reach your healers, and use Combustion when your team commits to a fight. In world PvP, Fire kills a single player faster than Frost but has fewer answers to a second attacker.
Darkspear Islands
The Darkspear Islands are Blizzard’s new 15 vs 15 battleground with control points and flag captures plus defense. On a contested control point, Blast Wave and Flamestrike punish enemies who stand together, and Impact stuns stop a capture attempt for a moment. Stay behind your own team’s melee while they hold the point, and save Combustion for the push that takes it. The map itself is not known yet.
Honor and ranks: WoW Forever is reported to bring a 14-rank Honor track, earned from battlegrounds and PvP content. Thresholds, weekly caps and decay are not announced; see the PvP and honor hub for what is confirmed.
Strengths
- Burst: Combustion, Hot Streak Pyroblasts and Fire Blast can take a player from full health quickly.
- Impact and Blast Wave give Fire its own stun and snare on top of baseline Frost Nova.
- Burning Soul protects Fireball and Pyroblast casts from pushback.
- Shatter from the Frost half turns Frostbite and Frost Nova into Fire Blast crits.
Weak points
- Less control than Frost: when a burst fails, a Fire Mage has fewer ways to reset the fight.
- Fire Ward and resistance gear reduce your damage more than Frost’s.
- Two attackers at once remain the hardest case: Polymorph one or run.
- Unknown level 60 PvP environment: rank rewards, battleground list and timing are not announced for WoW Forever.
Level 60 PvP talent build
Arcane 0 / Fire 31 / Frost 20, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.
Fire (31)
- Incineration 3/3 — +6% Fire Blast and Ice Lance crit, your instant damage while moving.
- Improved Fireball 5/5 — A shorter Fireball cast gives enemies less time to interrupt it.
- Ignite 5/5 — Every crit leaves a burn that keeps ticking while the target runs away.
- Impact 3/3 — 9% chance for Fire spells to stun for 2 sec: free casts during a duel.
- Burning Soul 3/3 — 70% chance to keep your cast time when hit, so Fireball and Pyroblast land under pressure.
- Pyroblast 1/1 — An opener from range and the spell Hot Streak speeds up.
- Hot Streak 1/1 — Crits with Fireball, Fire Blast and Scorch stack faster Pyroblasts, up to 75% shorter casts.
- Master of Elements 3/3 — Crit refunds keep a burst mage from running dry in a long battleground.
- Critical Mass 3/3 — +6% Fire crit chance, which also makes Combustion’s four crits arrive sooner.
- Blast Wave 1/1 — Instant AoE damage and a 50% daze: your answer when melee reaches you.
- Fire Power 2/5 — Two points to reach Combustion.
- Combustion 1/1 — Crit chance climbs with each Fire hit until four crits land: your kill window.
Frost (20)
- Frost Warding 2/2 — More armor from Ice Armor or Frost Armor, and a Frost Ward that can reflect Frost spells from enemy mages.
- Elemental Precision 3/5 — +3% hit with Fire and Frost spells, so fewer Fireballs and Frost Novas are resisted.
- Permafrost 3/3 — Longer and stronger chills from Frostbolt and Cone of Cold.
- Improved Frost Nova 2/2 — Frost Nova every 21 sec for more freezes to shatter.
- Frostbite 3/3 — Chills have a 15% chance to freeze, setting up a shattered Fire Blast.
- Frost Channeling 1/3 — One point to reach Ice Block.
- Ice Lance 1/1 — An instant that deals 300% more to frozen targets; a second instant finisher next to Fire Blast.
- Ice Block 1/1 — 10 sec immunity to survive a burst or wait out an enemy cooldown.
- Shatter 4/5 — +40% crit chance against frozen targets at 4/5: Frost Nova, then Fire Blast or Ice Lance.
Key abilities
- Frost Nova into Fire Blast: the shatter combo of this build; Fire Blast crits also stack Hot Streak.
- Blast Wave: instant damage and a daze when melee reaches you.
- Combustion with Eureka!: cheap, empowered Fireballs and Pyroblasts during a kill window.
- Polymorph: take a healer or second attacker out before you start burning a target.
- Counterspell: interrupt a heal on your kill target.
- Ice Block: survive a burst, then Blink away.
Matchups
- Warriors · Frost Nova and Blink, then Pyroblast from range; Blast Wave when they close in. Impact procs can stop a Mortal Strike combo.
- Rogues · survive the opener with Blink and Ice Block, then Frost Nova and Fire Blast. Burning Soul helps cast through bleeds.
- Hunters · close the gap into their dead zone or line-of-sight them; Blast Wave hits both hunter and pet.
- Priests · Blink out of Psychic Scream range, Counterspell their heal and burst during Combustion; a dispelled Ignite still leaves the crit’s damage done.
- Warlocks · kill fast before curses and Drain Life pile up. Fire Ward against Searing Pain and Immolate.
- Frost Mages · they out-control you; win by opening with Pyroblast and landing Combustion before their Frost Nova.
Resources and cooldowns
Fire burns mana fast in PvP because you cast your most expensive spells under pressure. Master of Elements refunds part of every crit, and Eureka! should always go with Combustion. Keep Ice Block for enemy burst instead of using it to reset a fight you are winning, and have Mana Gems ready before a battleground fight starts.
Gear
No mage PvP set appears in this site’s beta datamine, so the honor rewards for mages are not known. Fire trades health for burst, which makes Stamina more valuable than it looks: a Fire Mage who survives the first Rogue opener gets to use Combustion. Spell hit and crit come next, because Impact, Ignite and Hot Streak all need spells to land and crit. From the Tier 1 Manaflare Regalia, the 3-piece bonus shortens Counterspell by 5 sec.
Consumables and engineering
- Free Action Potion for the moment a Warrior or Rogue locks you down during a cast.
- Limited Invulnerability Potion to survive a physical burst while Ice Block is on cooldown.
- Greater Fire Protection Potion against enemy Fire Mages and Warlocks, if Forever keeps it.
- Engineering: grenades stun a target long enough for a Pyroblast, and nets hold melee away.
Tips
- Open on unaware targets with Pyroblast from maximum range and follow with Fire Blast as it lands.
