Overview
Level 60 · Protection Warrior in battlegrounds and world PvP.
A shield Warrior in Classic PvP was mostly a flag carrier in Warsong Gulch, hard to kill but also low in damage. WoW Forever’s Protection tree adds tools that make it more than a punching bag: Vanguard lets you Charge in Defensive Stance, Improved Revenge can stun, Improved Shield Bash silences, Concussion Blow is a long stun, Bastion raises damage with a shield and Shield Slam can dispel a magic effect such as a buff. This build is for battleground players who want to defend objectives and control attackers rather than top damage charts.
Your role in a fight
You defend. Stand on a point or protect a flag carrier, stun and silence whoever tries to capture, and survive long enough for help to arrive. You are also a good escort: Intervene gets you to a teammate, Vanguard’s Charge gets you to an attacker without leaving Defensive Stance, and Shield Slam can remove a protective buff from an enemy healer.
Darkspear Islands
Blizzard’s description of the Darkspear Islands, a 15 vs 15 battleground with control points and Arathi Basin-style flag captures and defense, fits this build well. Hold a point with one or two teammates, silence and stun anyone trying to capture its flag, and call for help early. You will not win a 1 vs 3 on damage, but you can hold long enough to matter.
Honor and ranks: WoW Forever is reported to bring a 14-rank Honor track, earned from battlegrounds and PvP content. Thresholds, weekly caps and decay are not announced; see the PvP and honor hub for what is confirmed.
Strengths
- Hard to kill. Shield, Toughness, Vitality, Last Stand and Shield Wall make you the last player to die on a point.
- Control on short cooldowns. Concussion Blow, Revenge stuns, Shield Bash silence and Disarm interrupt captures and burst.
- Magic dispel. Shield Slam’s chance to remove a magic effect can strip shields and buffs.
- Defensive Stance Charge through Vanguard means you never drop your defenses to close a gap.
Weak points
- Low kill pressure. You rarely finish anyone alone; your team has to bring damage.
- Kiting still works against you, and you have fewer Rage sources when nobody is hitting you.
- Casters ignore blocks, dodges and parries; Stamina and resistances are your only defense against spells.
Level 60 PvP talent build
Arms 0 / Fury 13 / Protection 38, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.
Protection (38)
- Shield Specialization 5/5 — more blocks against melee and Rage when they happen.
- Improved Bloodrage 2/2 — Rage to open a fight with a stun or silence.
- Toughness 5/5 — more armor against physical burst.
- Last Stand 1/1 — extra health when you are the focus target.
- Master of Defense 2/2 — Rage from dodges and parries against Rogues and Warriors.
- Improved Revenge 3/3 — Revenge can stun, a second stun on a short cooldown.
- Improved Disarm 3/3 — a longer Disarm against melee.
- Vanguard 1/1 — Charge without leaving Defensive Stance.
- Improved Shield Wall 2/2 — a longer Shield Wall when three players jump you.

- Improved Shield Bash 2/2 — Shield Bash silences, stopping heals and captures.
- Vitality 5/5 — Stamina and Strength.
- Bastion 5/5 — more damage with a shield so you are not harmless.

Fury (13)

- Iron Will 5/5 — stun and charm resistance so you stay on the point.
- Piercing Howl 1/1 — area slow for escorts and point attackers.
- Blood Craze 2/3 — a little health back after crits.
Flexible points: Improved Disarm can move to Anticipation or Improved Sunder Armor if you mostly face casters. Blood Craze is the first point to drop.
Key abilities
- Concussion Blow and Improved Revenge: your stuns; stun a player right before they finish a capture.
- Shield Bash: silence a healer or a capture attempt.
- Shield Slam: look for magic buffs worth dispelling.
- Intervene: jump to a teammate who is being attacked.
- Charge with Vanguard, then Hamstring or Piercing Howl to keep attackers from leaving.
- Shield Wall and Last Stand when help is on the way but not there yet.
- Intimidating Shout to scatter a group trying to take your point.
Matchups
- Rogue · Parries and blocks work; Disarm their burst and stun them when they reveal on the flag.
- Warrior · Mortal Strike hurts your self-sustain, but Disarm and Shield Wall outlast their burst.
- Mage · Blocks do nothing against spells. Shield Bash their casts and stay in range with Charge and Intercept.
- Warlock · Fears keep you off the point; use Berserker Rage and Iron Will stun resistance and interrupt Drain Life.
- Priest · Shield Slam can remove Power Word: Shield; silence heals.
- Hunter · Viper Sting does not matter to you and Hunters struggle to push you off a point; stay in melee.
- Paladin · Silence heals and stun after Divine Shield ends.
- Druid · Stun them in caster form, and Shield Bash heals.
- Shaman · Purge can remove your buffs; kill totems near your point.
Resources and cooldowns
Protection Rage in PvP comes from being attacked, which on a contested point is constant, but not while a Hunter kites you. Keep Rage for Shield Bash and Concussion Blow rather than Heroic Strike: a silence at the right time saves a point, and damage rarely does. Improved Bloodrage is your emergency Rage.
Gear
Stamina first, then armor and a strong shield. The datamine’s Warrior PvP sets (Champion’s and Lieutenant Commander’s Battlegear) give +40 Attack Power, 5 sec off Intercept and +20 Stamina, which all help a defender that has to reach attackers. The Tier 1 Protection set, Battleplate of Glory, takes 10 sec off Intervene at 3 pieces, which is very useful for escorting. How PvP gear is earned in Forever is not announced.
Legacy planner
Legacy nodes that matter here are For Great Honor and The Quick and the Dead, both in Resourcefulness and both unconfirmed beta data. Plan them in the Legacy planner.
Consumables and engineering
- Free Action Potion so a Hunter or Mage cannot root you off the point.
- Greater Stoneshield Potion against physical attackers and resistance potions against casters.
- Heavy Runecloth Bandages between fights.
- Engineering: grenades as an extra area stun on a flag, and a Goblin Sapper Charge against clustered attackers.
