You can pre-install WoW Forever now, and there is a fix for the greyed-out Install button

The WoW Forever client is downloadable ahead of the November 4 launch: Blizzard own version service shows the retail product serving build 1.60.1.70532. The official route is the Game Version menu above the Play button in the Battle.net app. Plenty of players see a dead Install button, and the fixes doing the rounds are a launcher command line, switching to the WoW account the purchase sits on, and turning off the new layout.

You can pre-install WoW Forever now, and there is a fix for the greyed-out Install button

The beta closed on October 23 and the game launches on November 4. In between, the download is already live — and whether you can start it seems to depend on which account you are looking at.

It is really there

Blizzard’s version service, the thing the launcher asks what to download, lists a retail Forever product serving build 1.60.1.70532. It is the same version string the final beta build carried, but with its own BuildConfig and ProductConfig, which is what a seeded retail client looks like before a launch.

So the files are on the content servers. This is not a leak or a workaround into something unfinished; it is the normal pre-load, just without an announcement post to tell you it started.

The official route

Blizzard spells this out in its name-reservation article, and it is worth following first because it is the supported path:

  1. Update your graphics drivers.
  2. Install the Battle.net desktop app, open it and let it update.
  3. Select World of Warcraft from the game list.
  4. In the Game Version menu above the Play button, choose World of Warcraft: Forever.
  5. Select Install.

That last dropdown is the part people miss. Forever is not a separate tile in the sidebar; it is a version of World of Warcraft, sitting next to Classic Era and the Anniversary realms.

When Install is greyed out

A lot of players are getting “This game cannot be installed yet” with a dead button. Three things are fixing it for people, and none of them touches the game files:

Switch to the right WoW account. The launcher sometimes lands on a different WoW account than the one you used in the beta, or the one the purchase sits on. Changing the account in the dropdown has unblocked the Install button for several players, and it is the first thing to try because it costs nothing.

Turn off the new Battle.net layout. Switching back from the launcher’s new layout has made the option appear for others. Also a free thing to try.

Ask the launcher directly. The Battle.net app takes command-line arguments, and one of them starts an install for a named product. Quote the path to your own Battle.net.exe:

  • Windows, Command Prompt: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Battle.net\Battle.net.exe" --game=WoWF --install
  • Windows, PowerShell: & 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Battle.net\Battle.net.exe' --game=WoWF --install
  • macOS, Terminal: /Applications/Battle.net.app/Contents/MacOS/Battle.net --game=WoWF --install

This is the launcher’s own flag, not a hack, and it hands the job back to Battle.net rather than downloading anything itself. If it works, you will see the install start in the app as normal.

We have not run these ourselves on a blocked account. They come from players who were stuck and got moving, and the mechanism — a launcher argument naming a product the service is already serving — matches what we can see on Blizzard’s side.

What you actually have to buy: nothing, to play

The confusion worth clearing up, because it is everywhere right now. Two different things are being mixed together:

Playing Forever at launch Needs an active subscription or Game Time. Nothing else.
Early Name Reservation from October 27 Needs a purchase: the Skyborne Heroic Pack, the Skyborne Epic Pack or the limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection

So if you bought something before the beta, you bought beta access, the Skyborne race and bonus items — not the game. And if you bought nothing, you are not locked out of launch; you are only out of the early name grab. Our pre-purchase breakdown has the tier-by-tier detail.

Worth doing before the 27th

  • Start the download now. It is a full client, and November 4 is a Wednesday evening in Europe.
  • Check which WoW account you are on, especially if you have several. Name reservation applies to the specific account the purchase was made for.
  • Decide your ruleset. Reservation lets you create up to three characters in total across all rulesets, so the choice is part of the name grab rather than something you sort out afterwards.

Our launch page tracks the dates and what is confirmed.
