Experience changes that affect this route

The beta changed the leveling maths twice in October, so advice written in September no longer holds. Each entry is what Blizzard wrote, with our reading of it marked separately. Last change .

  1. The target is parity with questing, not Classic Era dungeon speedAnnounced, not in a build yet

Blizzard's stated aim: after these changes, perfect experience-per-hour dungeon play should land very close to, if not equal to, optimal questing. It also said dungeon experience will not return to Classic Era levels, because dungeon spam being the optimal path fails its design pillars.

What it means for your route: Plan a mixed route. Dungeons are for the levels where an instance sits on your path and the group is close to your level; questing carries the levels in between. A pure dungeon run to 60 is being balanced out of the game on purpose.

    Well Restedrank 1 · Adventure

    Talentedrank 5 · Adventure

You gain talent points every level starting at level 5 instead of starting at level 10, but you still may not have more than 51 total talent points.

The strongest leveling node in the tree: talent points from level 5 instead of 10, so you reach your first real build five levels sooner.

5% of your health and mana back on every killing blow. Solo questing is mostly downtime between fights, and this is the node that removes it. It does nothing in dungeons, raids or battlegrounds.

    Well Restedrank 2 · Adventure

Your rested experience accumulates 8% faster and your rested experience cap is increased by 8%.

The last point goes back into rested experience.

    1 point · 16/16

What to skip, and why

  • Permanence: Its party-buff half does nothing alone; the camp rest half is not worth three points while you are questing.
  • For Great Honor: Honor only, so it waits until you start battlegrounds.
  • Diplomat: Reputation matters at 60, not on the way there.
  • High Alert, Field Medicine: Stealth detection and bandage timers are situational; neither changes how fast you level.

Variants

  • If you gather while you level, one or two points in Bountiful Harvest (20% more scarce materials per rank, Mining, Herbalism and Skinning) pay for your mounts; take them out of the last picks on this list.
  • Levelling in dungeons instead? Thrill of Adventure is dead weight there — the dungeon plan on any dungeon leveling guide spends those five points on Permanence, Reinforce and faster corpse runs.

Legacy values are datamined from the beta client and can change. Plan your own spread in the Legacy planner, see where points come from inLegacy Points, or read the Legacy system guide. The order above is our recommendation; the effects are game data.

Overview

Levels 10–60 · Affliction Warlock, solo questing and grinding.

The drain tank is the classic way to level a Warlock with almost no downtime: put your damage over time spells on two or three mobs, let the Voidwalker hold them, and channel Drain Life to heal while they die. Life Tap turns that healing back into mana, so you rarely sit down. The path follows the classic Affliction leveling route (Improved Corruption, Improved Life Tap, Suppression, Siphon Life, Shadow Mastery, with Demonic Embrace and Improved Voidwalker from Demonology), adapted to WoW Forever. Improved Drain Soul does not exist here; its role is split between Improved Drains (more Drain Life and Drain Soul damage per Affliction effect on the target, and 9 extra yards on Drain Life) and Soul Harvest, which gives you full mana regeneration while casting after a Drain Soul kill. Fel Concentration now protects casts as well as channels, and Forever’s Curse of Agony is called Bane of Agony.

Why this build

  • Almost no downtime. Drain Life, Siphon Life and Life Tap cycle health and mana, so you pull again straight away.
  • Multiple mobs at once. Corruption and Bane of Agony on three targets with a Voidwalker tanking kills a whole camp in one fight.
  • Instant damage while moving. Improved Corruption makes Corruption instant, so you can kite and still apply damage.
  • Strong in world PvP: DoTs, Fear, Siphon Life and Wrack keep hurting while you run.

Weak spots

  • Slow kills on a single mob compared with Destruction; damage over time needs the whole duration to pay off.
  • Soul Shard management. Drain Soul on kills takes attention; keep five or six shards, not a full bag.
  • Soul Siphon trades healing for speed: Drain Life deals damage 51% faster but heals 30% less per tick, so watch your health on long channels.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10 to 60. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–14 · Improved Corruption 5/5 — At 5/5 Corruption becomes instant and deals 10% more damage: cast it while moving and on every target.
  • Levels 15–16 · Improved Life Tap 2/2 — 20% more mana from Life Tap, the other half of the drain tank loop.
  • Levels 17–19 · Improved Drains 3/3 — Drain Life, Drain Soul and Wrack deal or drain 20% more at 3/3, the base of a build that lives on its channels.
  • Levels 20–21 · Soul Harvest 2/2 — A kill under your Drain Soul gives 10 sec of doubled mana regeneration that fully continues while casting: finish mobs with Drain Soul and never drink.
  • Levels 22–24 · Fel Concentration 3/3 — 70% chance to avoid interruption from damage on Drain Life, Drain Mana, Drain Soul and Wrack at 3/3. Essential once mobs are hitting you.
  • Levels 25–26 · Suppression 2/5 — More hit with all spells and 20% less threat at 5/5, so the Voidwalker keeps aggro and higher-level mobs resist less.
  • Level 27 · Amplify Curse 1/1 — Makes the next Curse of Weakness or Bane of Agony 50% stronger; also required for Curse of Exhaustion.
  • Levels 28–29 · Nightfall 2/2 — Corruption, Drain Life and Drain Soul can proc Shadow Trance: an instant Shadow Bolt for free damage.
  • Level 30 · Siphon Life 1/1 — An extra DoT that heals you every 3 sec for its whole duration.
  • Levels 31–35 · Demonic Embrace (Demonology) 5/5 — +15% Stamina at 5/5 with no Spirit penalty: more health to Life Tap and more room for mistakes.
  • Levels 36–38 · Improved Voidwalker (Demonology) 3/3 — +30% to Torment, Suffering, Consume Shadows and Sacrifice: the Voidwalker holds more mobs and its shield absorbs more.
  • Levels 39–41 · Soul Siphon 3/3 — Drain Life and Drain Soul deal 12% more per other Affliction effect on the target at 3/3, up to 36%, so mobs with Corruption and Bane of Agony up die much sooner.
  • Levels 42–43 · Improved Bane of Agony 2/2 — +10% Bane of Agony damage at 2/2, the DoT on every mob.
  • Levels 44–48 · Shadow Mastery 5/5 — +10% Shadow damage and life drained at 5/5, which boosts Corruption, Bane of Agony and every drain.
  • Level 49 · Wrack 1/1 — A short, strong Shadow drain that also makes your other DoTs deal 10% more to the target for 6 sec.
  • Levels 50–51 · Grim Reach 2/2 — +10% range on Affliction spells per point.
  • Levels 52–54 · Pandemic 3/3 — Higher critical strike damage bonus on your damage over time spells (up to 100%).
  • Level 55 · Curse of Exhaustion 1/1 — A 30% slow for kiting a runner or escaping a mob you cannot fight.
  • Levels 56–58 · Suppression 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 59–60 · Fel Vitality (Demonology) 2/3 — +10% health and mana for your demon and +10% maximum mana for you at 2/3: a Voidwalker that survives longer pulls.

Key levels

  • Level 10 · Voidwalker quest and Drain Soul. Improved Corruption starts: at 5/5 Corruption is instant.
  • Level 14 · Drain Life is trained. Improved Drains follows at 17 for more damage and range on every drain.
  • Level 20 · Soul Harvest: finish mobs with Drain Soul to cast with full mana regeneration for 20 sec. Succubus quest and Demon Armor.
  • Level 22 · Fel Concentration: damage no longer stops Drain Life, so the drain tank loop works on multiple mobs.
  • Level 30 · Siphon Life: another heal over time that ticks while you do everything else. Felhunter quest and Hellfire.
  • Level 36 · Improved Voidwalker is full: stronger Torment, Suffering, Consume Shadows and Sacrifice.
  • Level 40 · Felsteed mount and Howl of Terror for emergencies. Soul Siphon completes at 41: drains deal damage 51% faster.
  • Level 48 · Shadow Mastery full: +5% Shadow damage and life drained. Wrack follows at 49.
  • Level 60 · Finished at 41/10/0 with Fel Vitality for a sturdier Voidwalker and a bigger mana pool.

How to pull and kill

  1. Keep Demon Skin or Demon Armor up and the Voidwalker out. Send the Voidwalker in first and wait for one or two Torments.
  2. Bane of Agony and Corruption on the first mob, then Siphon Life from 30. Put Corruption and Bane of Agony on a second and third mob once the Voidwalker has them.
  3. Channel Drain Life on the mob you want dead first. Fel Concentration keeps it going while you take hits; Improved Drains makes it stronger for each Affliction effect on the target.
  4. Life Tap when you are high on health and low on mana, then Drain Life back up. Use a wand between channels if both bars are fine.
  5. Finish each mob with Drain Soul below 25% health for a Soul Shard and Soul Harvest’s mana regeneration.
  6. If the Voidwalker is about to die, Sacrifice for a shield, Fear the most dangerous mob and Drain Life. Death Coil from 42 gives an instant heal and horror.

Leveling tips

  • Bag space for Soul Shards. Keep a small stack for Healthstones, Soulstones and summons; buy a Soul Pouch when you can.
  • Healthstone and Soulstone before every session. A Soulstone on yourself turns a death into a short break.
  • Wand filler. Affliction’s DoTs plus a wand kill most mobs without Shadow Bolt; upgrade the wand often.
  • Voidwalker for packs, Felhunter for casters. Swap to the Felhunter (from 30) against caster-heavy areas for Spell Lock and Devour Magic.
  • Tailoring makes cloth gear and bags; Enchanting or Alchemy go well with it.
  • Quest zones by level: Westfall, Silverpine or the Barrens to 20, Darkshore, Redridge or Hillsbrad to 30, Arathi, Stranglethorn and Desolace to 40, Tanaris, Feralas and the Hinterlands to 50, then Un’Goro, Felwood and the Plaguelands.
  • Group content: Scarlet Monastery wings and Razorfen Downs are good in the 30s and 40s, where many DoTs on large pulls add up quickly.

After level 60

At 60 the build still levels and farms well. For dungeons and raids, Pandemic and Malevolence are worth more than Curse of Exhaustion and the late Demonology points.

Forever splits Classic's Improved Drain Soul into Improved Drains and Soul Harvesting, and this order takes both early for a reason: the drain tank loop is a mana engine before it is a damage build. Fel Concentration 3/3 at 22 is the point it actually comes online, because in Forever it protects casts as well as channels, so Drain Life survives three mobs chewing on you. One trade-off to understand before spending: Soul Siphon 3/3 at 41 makes Drain Life deal damage 51 percent faster but heal 30 percent less per tick. If you are already pulling at your limit, that is a straight downgrade to your tanking.

  2. WFB_EditorModeratorSep 16, 2026

Practical caveat on shards. This build wants Drain Soul finishes to keep Soul Harvesting up, which makes shard management a constant background task from level 20, not something you do once before a dungeon. Five or six and a Soul Pouch, not a full bag. Pet choice is the other assumption baked into the order: Improved Voidwalker 3/3 at 36 is three points spent on the premise that the Voidwalker is your default, so every stretch you spend on the Felhunter in caster zones is a stretch those points do nothing. That is fine, just know you are paying for it.
