Overview
Levels 1–40 · Demonology Warlock, solo questing and grinding.
Demonology is the safest way to level a Warlock: the Voidwalker tanks, your DoTs do the damage, and your demon keeps absorbing hits that would kill another cloth wearer. This guide follows the classic Demonology leveling route (Improved Corruption first, then Demonic Embrace, Improved Voidwalker, Master Summoner, Fel Domination, Unholy Power, Demonic Sacrifice and Soul Link), rebuilt for the WoW Forever Demonology tree. Fel Stamina and Fel Intellect are merged into Fel Vitality, Unholy Power now boosts all damage from every demon including the Imp, Demonic Energies heals your pet for part of your spell damage, and Demonic Knowledge adds spell damage while a demon is out. It ends at 40 with Soul Link, which is the point where the build has everything it needs for solo play; Master Demonologist and Demonic Pact are the next steps.
Why this build
- Very hard to kill. The Voidwalker tanks, Demonic Embrace adds health and Soul Link moves 30% of the damage you take onto your demon.
- Pet sustain. Demonic Energies heals the Voidwalker as you fight and gives it your Life Tap mana, so Consume Shadows downtime shrinks.
- Fast recovery from mistakes. Master Summoner and Fel Domination put a fresh Voidwalker out in seconds.
- Easy to play: send the pet, DoT, wand. Great for a first Warlock.
Weak spots
- Lower personal damage than Affliction or Destruction; kills take a little longer.
- Pet dependent. A dead or out-of-range Voidwalker leaves you as a fragile caster until you resummon.
- Threat. Opening with Shadow Bolt or Immolate before the Voidwalker has aggro pulls the mob to you.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10 to 40. The talent tree above shows the finished level 40 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Improved Corruption (Affliction) 5/5 — Instant Corruption with 10% more damage at 5/5: your main damage over time spell on every mob.
- Levels 15–19 · Demonic Embrace 5/5 — +15% Stamina at 5/5 with no Spirit penalty: the first survival talent of the build.
- Levels 20–22 · Improved Voidwalker 3/3 — +30% to Torment, Suffering, Consume Shadows and Sacrifice: better threat, more healing and a bigger shield.
- Levels 23–25 · Fel Vitality 3/3 — +15% health and mana for your demon and +15% maximum mana for you at 3/3.
- Levels 26–27 · Unholy Power 2/5 — +10% damage for the Imp, Voidwalker, Succubus, Incubus and Felhunter at 5/5.
- Levels 28–29 · Master Summoner 2/2 — Summons cast 4 sec faster and cost 40% less mana at 2/2; required for Fel Domination.
- Level 30 · Fel Domination 1/1 — Your next summon is almost instant and half price: a new Voidwalker in the middle of a fight.
- Levels 31–32 · Demonic Energies 2/2 — Your pet heals for 16% of your spell damage and gets the mana you gain from Life Tap at 2/2.
- Level 33 · Demonic Sacrifice 1/1 — Sacrifice a demon for a long buff; rarely used in this pet build, but required for Soul Link.
- Levels 34–36 · Unholy Power 5/5 — finish the talent.
- Levels 37–39 · Demonic Knowledge 3/3 — Spell damage and healing up to 99% of your level at 3/3 while a demon is summoned.
- Level 40 · Soul Link 1/1 — 30% of the damage you take goes to your demon, and both of you deal 3% more damage.
Key levels
- Level 1 · Buy Immolate and do the Imp quest. Immolate plus Shadow Bolt and the Imp kills everything until 10.
- Level 4 · Corruption and Curse of Weakness. Life Tap follows at 6 and Curse of Agony (Bane of Agony in Forever) at 8.
- Level 10 · Voidwalker from the class quest: the core of this build. Improved Corruption starts.
- Level 15 · Demonic Embrace: +15% Stamina at 5/5 for more health to Life Tap.
- Level 20 · Improved Voidwalker. Succubus quest, Demon Armor and Rain of Fire are trained.
- Level 30 · Fel Domination: an emergency Voidwalker in a couple of seconds. Felhunter quest and Hellfire.
- Level 36 · Unholy Power full: +10% damage for every demon.
- Level 39 · Demonic Knowledge full: extra spell damage based on your level while a demon is out.
- Level 40 · Soul Link: 30% of your damage taken goes to the demon and both deal 3% more. Felsteed mount.
How to pull and kill
- Keep Demon Skin or Demon Armor up. Before 10, send the Imp in and open with Immolate and Shadow Bolt.
- From 10, send the Voidwalker in first and let it Torment once or twice before you cast anything.
- Corruption and Bane of Agony on the target, then wand. Put DoTs on a second mob only after the Voidwalker has hit it.
- Life Tap when your health is high; Demonic Energies passes that mana to your demon too. Drain Life if you need health back.
- Finish mobs with Drain Soul when you need Soul Shards, otherwise with the wand.
- If the Voidwalker is about to die, Sacrifice for the shield, then Fel Domination and summon a new one. Fear anything that runs at you.
Leveling tips
- Sell starting food and water for Immolate at level 1; the Imp quest is quick and makes levels 2–10 easy.
- Health Funnel keeps the Voidwalker alive between pulls; do it while drinking.
- Consume Shadows out of combat heals the Voidwalker for free: use it before every pull.
- Healthstone and Soulstone from the trainer once available; a Soulstone on yourself saves the run back.
- Wand early: the wand is your main filler for this build, not Shadow Bolt, which steals aggro.
- Felhunter for casters. Swap to the Felhunter in caster-heavy areas from 30; Soul Link works with every demon.
- Dungeons: Ragefire Chasm, The Deadmines and Wailing Caverns suit this build in the teens and early 20s; the extra health and a sturdy demon make pulls safer.
After level 40
From 41, put five points into Master Demonologist (10% less physical damage for you and the Voidwalker), then Demonic Pact, which lets you keep a Demonic Sacrifice buff while a different demon is out. Demonic Aegis and Fel Vitality’s extra ranks are good fillers afterwards.
