Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.
Overview
Levels 10–60 · Beast Mastery Hunter, solo questing and grinding.
Hunters are the easiest solo levelers in Classic, and Beast Mastery is the fastest way to play one: your pet holds the mob, you shoot it, and neither of you rests much. The Classic guides take Improved Aspect of the Hawk first, then every talent that makes the pet tougher and deadlier, Bestial Wrath at 40 and Marksmanship after that. The WoW Forever tree follows the same idea with new pieces. Deadly Aspects replaces Improved Aspect of the Hawk and also works in melee with Aspect of the Beast, Focused Fire adds 2% damage while your pet is out, and Summon Hawk gives you a second attacking beast that Unleashed Fury and Ferocity also improve. The finish at 60 borrows Careful Aim, Efficiency and Rapid Killing from Marksmanship.
Why this build
- The pet tanks. Endurance Training and Spirit Bond keep it alive, so you almost never take damage on normal pulls.
- Very little downtime. You shoot instead of casting big spells, and Spirit Bond heals both of you between fights.
- Pet damage does not need your gear. Unleashed Fury, Ferocity and Frenzy make the pet a large share of your damage while your own gear is still weak.
- Bestial Wrath at 40 turns elites and dangerous pulls into short fights.
- Summon Hawk adds a second attacker for 18 sec on the Arcane Shot cooldown, improved by the same pet talents.
Weak spots
- Pet threat on multiple mobs. A second mob goes straight for you; trap it or let the pet switch with Intimidation.
- Dead zone. Between melee range and 8 yards you can neither shoot nor fight well. Step back before shooting.
- Pet upkeep. Feeding, happiness and ammo cost time and gold; an unhappy pet does less damage.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10 to 60. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Deadly Aspects 5/5 — With Aspect of the Hawk, your shots have a 10% chance for 150% faster ranged attacks for a while; Aspect of the Beast does the same for melee. The biggest early damage boost.
- Levels 15–16 · Focused Fire 2/2 — +2% damage with all attacks while your pet is active, which is always while leveling.
- Levels 17–19 · Endurance Training 3/5 — Up to 15% more health and armor for your pet, so it tanks longer and needs fewer Mend Pets.
- Levels 20–24 · Unleashed Fury 5/5 — +15% damage for your pets and hawks.
- Levels 25–29 · Ferocity 5/5 — +10% critical strike chance for your pets and hawks. Five points unlock Frenzy.
- Level 30 · Bestial Swiftness 1/1 — +30% movement speed for your pet, so it reaches mobs and returns to you fast. Required for Intimidation.
- Level 31 · Intimidation 1/1 — Your pet’s next attack stuns for 3 sec with a much higher crit chance and high threat: the answer to a mob that turns on you.
- Levels 32–33 · Spirit Bond 2/2 — You and your pet regenerate 2% of total health every 10 sec while it is active: less resting.
- Level 34 · Summon Hawk 1/1 — A hawk dive-bombs your target and keeps attacking for 18 sec. Shares its cooldown with Arcane Shot, so use it instead when mana is fine.
- Levels 35–39 · Frenzy 5/5 — Your pet gains 30% attack speed for 8 sec after a critical strike, which happens constantly with Ferocity.
- Level 40 · Bestial Wrath 1/1 — Your pet deals 50% more damage for 18 sec and cannot be stopped. Use it on elites and every two-mob pull.
- Levels 41–42 · Endurance Training 5/5 — finish the talent.
- Levels 43–44 · Bestial Discipline 2/2 — Faster pet Focus regeneration for more special attacks, and 50% of your mana regeneration continues while casting.
- Levels 45–46 · Improved Mend Pet 2/2 — Mend Pet costs 20% less mana and can cleanse a curse, disease, magic or poison effect from the pet.
- Levels 47–51 · Careful Aim (Marksmanship) 5/5 — Attack power equal to your Intellect from Marksmanship, and the five points that open Efficiency.
- Levels 52–56 · Efficiency (Marksmanship) 5/5 — 15% cheaper shots, stings and melee abilities: long grinds without drinking.
- Levels 57–58 · Rapid Killing (Marksmanship) 2/2 — 2 min shorter Rapid Fire cooldown, and your next shot after a kill deals 20% more damage.
- Levels 59–60 · Improved Revive Pet 2/2 — Faster and cheaper Revive Pet, and your pet returns with more health.
Key levels
- Level 10 · Tame your first pet through the class quest, and Deadly Aspects starts with Aspect of the Hawk.
- Level 20 · Aspect of the Cheetah and Freezing Trap from the trainer; Unleashed Fury begins.
- Level 26 · Rapid Fire from the trainer, your first damage cooldown.
- Level 30 · Feign Death from the trainer, and Bestial Swiftness for a faster pet.
- Level 31 · Intimidation: a stun on the pet’s next attack with high threat, for adds and runners.
- Level 34 · Summon Hawk: a second attacker on the Arcane Shot cooldown.
- Level 40 · Bestial Wrath, mail armor and your first mount.
- Level 47 · Careful Aim from Marksmanship, then Efficiency at 52 for cheaper shots and stings on long grind sessions.
How to pull and kill
- Send the pet first and let it attack for two or three seconds before you shoot. Hunter’s Mark on elites and anything that will take a while.
- Serpent Sting, then Auto Shot. Arcane Shot or Summon Hawk when they are off cooldown and you have mana.
- If a mob turns to you, Intimidation to stun it and pull threat to the pet, or Wing Clip and step away to shooting range.
- Second mob: Freezing Trap it before the pull, or let the pet pick it up with Intimidation. From 40, Bestial Wrath through two-mob pulls.
- Keep the pet healthy. Mend Pet during the fight when it drops below 50%; Spirit Bond handles the rest between pulls.
- If things go wrong, Feign Death to drop combat (from 30), then Revive Pet or Mend Pet and try again.
Leveling tips
- Pick a damage pet. Cats hit hard with Claw, boars are tough and open with Charge, and wind serpents add Lightning Breath. Broken Tooth, the rare cat in the Badlands, is a well-known upgrade in the high 30s.
- Feed your pet when it is not happy. Keep a stack of its food in your bags; an unhappy pet deals less damage and can run away.
- Carry a full quiver or ammo pouch and buy the best arrows or bullets your level can use. Running out of ammo in the middle of a quest zone costs more time than any talent saves.
- Upgrade your bow or gun first. Ranged weapon damage drives your Auto Shot, and a melee weapon mainly adds stats.
- Zones: Westfall, Loch Modan, Darkshore or the Barrens for 10–20, Wetlands, Hillsbrad and Stonetalon for 20–30, Arathi Highlands, Desolace and Stranglethorn Vale for 30–40, Tanaris, Feralas and the Hinterlands for 40–50, and Un’Goro, Felwood and Winterspring for 50–60.
- Skinning and Leatherworking or Mining and Engineering suit Hunters: armor kits and leather gear, or scopes, guns and ammo from Engineering.
- Dungeons: Wailing Caverns (19–25), Razorfen Kraul (30–36) and Zul’Farrak (45–51) have many beasts, and your pet’s damage is welcome in any group. Set the pet to passive or defensive inside so it does not pull extra packs.
After level 60
At 60 this build remains strong for solo content and farming. For dungeons and raids, most Hunters move into a Marksmanship-heavy build with Trueshot Aura; the Marksmanship Hunter leveling guide shows the Forever Marksmanship tree.
