Overview

Level 60 · Beast Mastery Hunter · DPS in dungeons and raids.

Classic 1.12 raid Hunters were almost always Marksmanship, because pets died to boss area damage and Beast Mastery talents were wasted without them. WoW Forever’s Beast Mastery tree tries to change that. Focused Fire raises all your damage while the pet is out, Deadly Aspects gives Aspect of the Hawk a chance for a long ranged attack speed boost, Summon Hawk adds a temporary second attacker that shares its cooldown with Arcane Shot, and Unleashed Fury and Ferocity now boost hawks as well as your pet. Bestial Wrath is still the capstone. The client data also contains pet loyalty and Training Point strings, which hints at pet training changes nobody can test at level 60 yet.

Your job in the group

You are ranged damage with a pet that has to survive. Keep the pet on the boss’s back and out of frontal and area attacks, keep your own shots going, and handle Hunter utility: Tranquilizing Shot on enrages if your raid needs it, Hunter’s Mark on the kill target, and Feign Death to drop threat. In dungeons, your pet can briefly hold an add while the tank gathers the rest.

Why play it

  • Two damage sources that both scale with you. Focused Fire and the pet talents make your pet and hawks part of your damage, not a side bonus.
  • Long attack speed windows from Deadly Aspects while Aspect of the Hawk is up.
  • Burst on demand. Bestial Wrath and Summon Hawk line up for boss burn phases.
  • Strong in dungeons, where pets rarely die and Intimidation is a useful stun.

Weak points

  • Pet deaths. Area damage and cleaves kill pets; a dead pet turns off Focused Fire and most of your tree.
  • Less personal damage than a Marksmanship build, since fewer points go into your own shots.
  • Summon Hawk shares Arcane Shot’s cooldown, so it competes with a shot you would otherwise fire.

Level 60 talent build

Beast Mastery 31 / Marksmanship 20 / Survival 0, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.

Beast Mastery (31)

  • Deadly Aspects 5/5 — Aspect of the Hawk can proc a long ranged attack speed boost.
  • Endurance Training 3/5 — a tougher pet that survives stray area damage.
  • Focused Fire 2/2 — more damage from everything you do while the pet is out.
  • Bestial Swiftness 1/1 — a faster pet to get back to the boss after moving, and the path to Intimidation.
  • Unleashed Fury 5/5 — more pet and hawk damage.
  • Ferocity 5/5 — more pet and hawk crits, which feed Frenzy.
  • Summon Hawk 1/1 — a second attacker for a short time; it shares Arcane Shot’s cooldown.
  • Intimidation 1/1 — a pet stun and threat tool, required for Bestial Wrath.
  • Bestial Discipline 2/2 — faster pet Focus and some of your mana regeneration while casting.
  • Frenzy 5/5 — pet attack speed after pet crits.
  • Bestial Wrath 1/1 — a big pet damage window for burn phases.

Marksmanship (20)

  • Careful Aim 5/5 — Attack Power from Intellect, which Hunters wear anyway.
  • Efficiency 3/5 — cheaper shots and stings for long fights.
  • Lethal Attacks 5/5 — crit for all your attacks.
  • Rapid Killing 2/2 — a shorter Rapid Fire cooldown and a stronger shot after a kill on trash.
  • Trueshot Aura 1/1 — ranged Attack Power for your party.
  • Mortal Shots 4/5 — bigger ranged crits.

Flexible points: If your raid already has a Marksmanship Hunter with Trueshot Aura, move that point and Mortal Shots into Improved Stings or Improved Arcane Shot. Endurance Training can become Improved Mend Pet on fights with pet-killing debuffs.

Rotation and priority

  1. Before the pull: Aspect of the Hawk, pet on passive until the tank has threat, Hunter’s Mark on the boss.
  2. Send the pet in after the tank’s first threat lead, and keep it behind the boss.
  3. Auto Shot never stops; do not let movement or shot timing clip it.
  4. Multi-Shot and Arcane Shot or Summon Hawk on cooldown. Summon Hawk and Arcane Shot share a cooldown, so pick the hawk when its damage lines up with Bestial Wrath.
  5. Serpent Sting on longer fights when the boss is not immune.
  6. Mend Pet before the pet drops low; a living pet is worth more than one missed shot.
  7. Feign Death when your threat creeps toward the tank’s, then resume.

Cooldowns

  • Bestial Wrath with Rapid Fire and Summon Hawk for the burn phase.
  • Intimidation to stun an add or take threat off a healer in dungeons.
  • Tranquilizing Shot on enrage effects if your raid assigns it.

Resources

Hunter mana is shared between shots and Mend Pet, and a Beast Mastery Hunter spends more on the pet than other specs. Efficiency lowers shot costs, Bestial Discipline keeps some mana regeneration going while casting, and Aspect of the Viper is not part of Classic’s toolkit, so treat mana potions and runes as part of long fights. Your pet’s Focus is separate: Bestial Discipline speeds it up so pet abilities come more often.

Stat priority

Hit comes first, because missed shots and a missed Tranquilizing Shot hurt the raid. After hit, Agility and critical strike are close, with Agility slightly ahead since it also raises Attack Power; then Attack Power, then Intellect, which Careful Aim turns into Attack Power in this build. Stamina keeps you alive through raid damage, and Spirit and Strength are last.

Gear and set bonuses

Wildstalker Armor is the Hunter Tier 1 set in the beta datamine, shared by all three specs: 2 pieces give 1% attack and casting speed, 3 pieces take 3 sec off Frost Trap and Freezing Trap, 4 pieces give +36 Attack Power against Beasts, and 5 pieces take 1 sec off Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot. The 4-piece bonus only matters against beasts, but the 2-piece and 5-piece help every fight. Before raid tier, Beaststalker Armor and its upgrade Beastmaster Armor now pay out at 2 through 6 pieces with Attack Power, mana regeneration, a mana proc on auto attacks and a chance to break roots.

Legacy planner

Permanence in the Legacy tree extends long-duration party and raid stat buffs, and Trueshot Aura is a 30 min party buff, so it may qualify. Gourmand extends food buffs. Both are unconfirmed beta data; check tooltips in the Legacy planner.

Consumables and professions

  • Agility: Elixir of the Mongoose and Elixir of Greater Agility, plus Agility food such as Grilled Squid.
  • Mana: Major Mana Potion and runes on long fights.
  • Pet food your pet likes, to keep it happy between pulls.
  • Ammo: carry more stacks than you think a raid needs, as in Classic.
  • Professions: Engineering for scopes and grenades, or Leatherworking and Skinning for your own mail and leather.
