The duo at a glance
Hunter & Warlock Duo for levels 10–60: two pets in front, two ranged damage dealers behind them.
This duo never needs a tank or a healer because the pets do that work. The Hunter’s beast holds the kill target, the Warlock’s Voidwalker picks up the second mob, and both players stand at range stacking damage on whatever the beast is fighting. Beast Mastery makes the Hunter’s pet a real tank and a large share of the damage; Demonology turns the Voidwalker into a second tank and, through Soul Link, into a damage sponge for the Warlock. The two classes also cover each other’s gaps: the Warlock brings Fear, Banish, Healthstones and a Soulstone, the Hunter brings Feign Death, traps and fast travel with Aspect of the Pack.
| Role | Spec | Job |
|---|---|---|
| DPS | Beast Mastery Hunter | Beast tanks the kill target, stings and shots, Intimidation on runners, Feign Death when a pull is lost |
| DPS | Demonology Warlock | Voidwalker holds the add, DoTs and Shadow Bolts, Fear, Soulstone and Healthstones |
Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.
How the hunter & warlock duo plays
- One target, two pets: the Hunter sends the beast in first and marks the target. The Warlock waits for the beast to land a few hits before Corruption, so the first mob stays glued to the beast.
- The second mob belongs to the Voidwalker: from the mid-20s the Warlock uses Searing Pain with Demonic Brand on the add, and the Voidwalker’s next attacks on it generate high threat. Before that, Torment does the same job.
- Damage order: Serpent Sting and Corruption on the kill target, then Arcane Shot, Summon Hawk and Shadow Bolts. Rotate the Warlock’s DoTs onto the add while the Hunter finishes the first mob.
- Emergency tools: Intimidation stuns a mob that runs for the Warlock, Fear removes a third mob for a few seconds, and Feign Death drops the Hunter out of a fight that is lost so the Warlock’s Soulstone can bring the duo back.
- Resting together: the Warlock’s Life Tap and Health Funnel keep both players fighting, while Spirit Bond and Mend Pet top up the beast. Drink only when both mana bars are low at the same time.
Your job as Beast Mastery Hunter
Your pet is the main tank of the duo, so every Beast Mastery point makes the whole duo safer, not just faster. Send the beast in, let it build threat, then play the damage dealer from maximum range. You also own the emergency buttons: Intimidation for a mob that runs at the Warlock, Feign Death when a pull goes wrong, and traps for a third mob. Keep your beast fed and happy, and repair its health with Mend Pet between pulls instead of waiting for it to regenerate.
Pull by pull
- Aspect of the Hawk on, Hunter’s Mark on the target, then send the beast in and wait for it to hit twice.
- Serpent Sting, then Auto Shot with Arcane Shot and Summon Hawk on cooldown; they share a cooldown, so alternate them.
- If the Voidwalker loses the add and it runs for the Warlock, pet on the add plus Intimidation, then Growl back to the first target once it is dead.
- From level 40, open big or elite pulls with Bestial Wrath; the beast cannot be stopped for the whole duration.
- After the kill, Mend Pet if the beast is below half health; Spirit Bond covers the rest while you loot.
Mistakes that get the duo killed
- Shooting before the beast has threat: the mob turns on you and the Warlock’s DoTs pull the add as well.
- Letting the beast chase a Feared mob into the next pack.
- Using Feign Death while the Warlock is still fighting; the whole pack switches to them.
- Forgetting Improved Revive Pet exists and running back to town when the beast dies mid-quest.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Deadly Aspects 5/5 — While Aspect of the Hawk is active, your ranged attacks can trigger a large burst of ranged attack speed. Aspect of the Hawk is always on while leveling, so this is free damage from level 10.
- Levels 15–16 · Focused Fire 2/2 — 2% more damage from everything you do while your pet is out, which is always.
- Levels 17–19 · Endurance Training 3/5 — More health and armor for the beast that tanks every pull.
- Levels 20–24 · Unleashed Fury 5/5 — Up to 15% more pet and hawk damage; pet damage is also pet threat.
- Level 25 · Bestial Swiftness 1/1 — Faster pet movement, so the beast reaches runners and fleeing mobs. Required for Intimidation.
- Levels 26–30 · Ferocity 5/5 — Up to 10% more critical strike chance for your pet and hawks.
- Level 31 · Intimidation 1/1 — A pet stun with high threat: the button that pulls a mob off the Warlock.
- Levels 32–33 · Spirit Bond 2/2 — You and the beast regenerate health while it is out, cutting downtime between pulls.
- Level 34 · Summon Hawk 1/1 — A hawk that attacks your target for 18 sec, sharing a cooldown with Arcane Shot. Unleashed Fury and Ferocity also boost it.
- Levels 35–39 · Frenzy 5/5 — Pet critical strikes give it 30% attack speed for 8 sec; with Ferocity it is up most of the fight.
- Level 40 · Bestial Wrath 1/1 — 50% more pet damage for 18 sec and the beast cannot be stopped: use it on elites and double pulls.
- Levels 41–42 · Improved Revive Pet 2/2 — Faster, cheaper Revive Pet with more health, so a dead beast costs seconds instead of a trip.
- Levels 43–47 · Careful Aim (Marksmanship) 5/5 — Attack Power from Intellect, a steady damage gain from the gear you already wear.
- Levels 48–52 · Lethal Attacks (Marksmanship) 5/5 — +5% critical strike chance with all attacks. Also needed for Mortal Shots.
- Levels 53–55 · Improved Stings (Marksmanship) 3/3 — Stronger Serpent Sting, your opener on every pull.
- Levels 56–57 · Rapid Killing (Marksmanship) 2/2 — Shorter Rapid Fire cooldown, and each kill makes your next shot hit harder: made for chain pulling.
- Levels 58–60 · Mortal Shots (Marksmanship) 3/5 — Bigger ranged critical strikes for the last levels before 60.
Where to level
Levels 10–20: finish your faction’s second zones (Westfall, Loch Modan or Darkshore for the Alliance; The Barrens or Silverpine Forest for the Horde). Named beasts and elite quest mobs are easy because two pets split the damage. Levels 20–30: Redridge Mountains, Wetlands, Ashenvale, Hillsbrad Foothills and Shadowfang Keep (23–29) with a group. Levels 30–40: Stranglethorn Vale, Arathi Highlands, Desolace and Thousand Needles; Scarlet Monastery Graveyard (31–37) and Library (34–40) are good group runs. Levels 40–50: Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands and the Badlands, with Krol’dok Stronghold (40–55), Uldaman (44–50) and Zul’Farrak (45–51) when you find three more players. Levels 50–60: Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, Burning Steppes, Western and Eastern Plaguelands and Winterspring. Banish is worth its weight in the City of Dalaran (28–33), where the dungeon chart lists demons among the enemies.
Where the duo struggles
- Two ranged players and no heals: a pull of three or four melee mobs outlasts both pets. Pull one pack at a time and Fear the extra mob early instead of hoping.
- Caster mobs ignore the pets and hit the players. Pull them around a corner so they come into melee range, or burst them with Arcane Shot and Shadow Bolt.
- Pet threat on the second mob is fragile at low levels. Until Demonic Brand, the Warlock waits two or three Torments before putting DoTs on the add.
- Deaths cost more time than in a healer duo: always keep a Soulstone on one player and Improved Revive Pet ready.
