Overview
Level 60 · Marksmanship Hunter · DPS in dungeons and raids.
Marksmanship was the standard Classic raid Hunter: Trueshot Aura for the party, Mortal Shots and Ranged Weapon Specialization for damage, and a pet that mostly stayed out of the way. WoW Forever’s Marksmanship tree rewrites most of it. Careful Aim turns Intellect into Attack Power, Lethal Attacks is crit for all attacks, Rapid Killing shortens Rapid Fire and powers up a shot after kills, Rapid Recuperation gives mana regeneration while casting, and the capstone Sniper Shot adds flat ranged damage. The big new decision is Lone Wolf: more damage from all attacks while you have no active pet, which a raid Hunter whose pet keeps dying to area damage may find attractive.
Your job in the group
You are ranged damage and raid utility. Trueshot Aura lifts your party’s ranged Attack Power, Hunter’s Mark marks the kill target, Tranquilizing Shot removes enrages when assigned, and Feign Death lets you push damage without pulling threat. In dungeons you can Freezing Trap an add and Multi-Shot trash.
Why play it
- All the damage is yours. Without a pet to protect, boss area damage cannot take away half your tree.
- Party buff. Trueshot Aura helps other Hunters and ranged Attack Power users in your party.
- Big crits. Lethal Attacks, Mortal Shots and Barrage stack on Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot.
- Mana tools in Efficiency and Rapid Recuperation for long fights.
Weak points
- Lone Wolf is a guess. Nobody knows yet whether dismissing your pet beats a living pet; test both.
- Positioning and shot timing matter more than for any other build, since Auto Shot is a big part of your damage.
- Weak without a good ranged weapon, which is the stat stick of every shot.
Level 60 talent build
Beast Mastery 0 / Marksmanship 38 / Survival 13, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.
Marksmanship (38)
- Careful Aim 5/5 — Attack Power from Intellect, so mail and leather with Intellect is no longer wasted.
- Improved Stings 3/3 — a stronger Serpent Sting for Rapid Recuperation uptime.
- Efficiency 5/5 — cheaper shots and stings.
- Lethal Attacks 5/5 — crit for every attack.
- Rapid Killing 2/2 — a much shorter Rapid Fire cooldown, and a stronger shot after trash kills.
- Lone Wolf 1/1 — more damage with no active pet; keep it if your pet would die anyway.
- Trueshot Aura 1/1 — party ranged Attack Power and the path to Sniper Shot.
- Mortal Shots 5/5 — bigger ranged crits.
- Rapid Recuperation 2/2 — mana regeneration while casting after Serpent Sting hits and Rapid Killing.
- Barrage 3/3 — more Multi-Shot, Aimed Shot and Volley damage.
- Ranged Weapon Specialization 5/5 — more damage with your bow, gun or crossbow.
- Sniper Shot 1/1 — the capstone’s flat ranged damage.
Survival (13)
- Improved Tracking 5/5 — more damage against the creature type you track, which on most bosses is known in advance.
- Survivalist 5/5 — more health against raid damage.
- Surefooted 3/3 — hit from talents, which lowers how much hit you need on gear.
Flexible points: If testing shows a living pet is better, swap Lone Wolf and Improved Stings for Focused Fire and pet talents in Beast Mastery. Survivalist can become Deflection or Entrapment only in dungeons.
Rotation and priority
- Before the pull: Aspect of the Hawk, Trueshot Aura, Hunter’s Mark on the boss, and either dismiss your pet (Lone Wolf) or set it to passive.
- Open with Aimed Shot once the tank has threat, then keep Auto Shot going.
- Multi-Shot on cooldown, timed between Auto Shots.
- Arcane Shot while moving or when Multi-Shot is on cooldown.
- Serpent Sting on longer fights to trigger Rapid Recuperation’s mana regeneration.
- Aimed Shot when your weapon speed and mana allow; the Wildstalker 5-piece shortens its cooldown.
- Feign Death when threat gets close, then resume.
Cooldowns
- Rapid Fire early and often; Rapid Killing shortens its cooldown a lot.
- Tranquilizing Shot on enrages when assigned.
- Freezing Trap on a loose add in dungeons, after Feign Death if needed.
Resources
Mana is the long-fight limit for Marksmanship. Efficiency lowers costs, and Rapid Recuperation adds regeneration while casting whenever Serpent Sting hits a target or you consume Rapid Killing. Keep Serpent Sting up on long bosses for that reason, and drop Arcane Shot first when mana runs low.
Stat priority
Hit first, and count Surefooted’s talent hit toward it. Then critical strike and Agility, which Lethal Attacks and Mortal Shots reward, then Attack Power. Intellect matters more than in Classic because Careful Aim turns it into Attack Power, so do not skip mail with Intellect. Stamina last among the useful stats.
Gear and set bonuses
Wildstalker Armor is the Hunter Tier 1 set in the beta datamine, shared by all three specs: 2 pieces give 1% attack and casting speed, 3 pieces take 3 sec off Frost Trap and Freezing Trap, 4 pieces give +36 Attack Power against Beasts, and 5 pieces take 1 sec off Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot. The 5-piece’s shorter Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot cooldowns fit this build best. Before raid tier, the reworked Beaststalker and Beastmaster dungeon sets add Attack Power and mana regeneration. The datamine also lists spell effects named Improved Aimed Shot (longer cast, more damage) and Hydra Shot (an instant multi-target shot) without saying where they come from.
Consumables and professions
- Agility: Elixir of the Mongoose and Agility food.
- Mana: Major Mana Potion, Mageblood Potion and runes.
- Ammo in bulk; bring the best arrows or bullets your level allows.
- Scope on your ranged weapon.
- Professions: Engineering for scopes and utility, or Leatherworking for mail and leather pieces.
