Overview

Level 60 · Marksmanship Hunter in battlegrounds and world PvP.

Icy Veins called the Marksmanship-Survival hybrid the most competitive Classic PvP Hunter: long range from Hawk Eye, burst from Marksmanship, Scatter Shot and Improved Concussive Shot for control, and Surefooted, Entrapment and Deterrence from Survival against melee. WoW Forever still has all of those in the same trees, so this build carries the idea over. The Forever additions it picks up are Lethal Attacks, Improved Stings for a shorter Viper Sting cooldown, Barrage for bigger Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot hits, and the Sniper Shot capstone.

Your role in a fight

You are the long-range threat and the control specialist. Pick off low-armor casters from maximum range, Viper Sting healers, and keep melee off yourself and your healers with Scatter Shot, Concussive Shot and Frost Trap. In group fights, a Frost Trap with Entrapment on a choke or a flag is area control few classes can match.

Darkspear Islands

The Darkspear Islands, as Blizzard describes them, are a 15 vs 15 battleground with control points and Arathi Basin-style flag captures and defense. Frost Trap with Entrapment on a flag makes capturing slow and dangerous, and Hawk Eye lets you shoot capturers from a safe spot. On defense, pick a position with line of sight to the flag; on offense, use Scatter Shot to peel defenders off your capturing teammate.

Honor and ranks: WoW Forever is reported to bring a 14-rank Honor track, earned from battlegrounds and PvP content. Thresholds, weekly caps and decay are not announced; see the PvP and honor hub for what is confirmed.

Strengths

  • Longest range with Hawk Eye.
  • Control: Scatter Shot, Concussive Shot with a stun chance, Frost Trap roots and Freezing Trap.
  • Burst: Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot crits with Mortal Shots and Barrage.
  • Melee defense: Deterrence, Counterattack and Surefooted’s resistance to slows.

Weak points

  • Dead zone. Enemies right next to you but outside melee range are the hardest to shoot; Scatter Shot and traps create distance.
  • Low armor and no heals; a Rogue opener or a Warlock focus can still kill you.
  • Mana runs out in long fights with constant Viper Sting and traps.

Level 60 PvP talent build

Beast Mastery 0 / Marksmanship 31 / Survival 20, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.

Marksmanship (31)

  • Hawk Eye 3/3 — more range for everything.
  • Improved Concussive Shot 5/5 — a stun chance on your main slow.
  • Improved Stings 2/3 — a shorter Viper Sting cooldown and a stronger Serpent Sting.
  • Lethal Attacks 5/5 — crit for burst.
  • Rapid Killing 2/2 — a shorter Rapid Fire and a stronger shot after a kill.
  • Trueshot Aura 1/1 — party ranged Attack Power and the path to Sniper Shot.
  • Mortal Shots 5/5 — bigger crits for burst.
  • Barrage 3/3 — bigger Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot.
  • Scatter Shot 1/1 — a short disorient to peel melee or interrupt a cast.
  • Ranged Weapon Specialization 3/5 — more ranged damage; three points to reach Sniper Shot.
  • Sniper Shot 1/1 — the capstone’s flat ranged damage.

Survival (20)

  • Deflection 5/5 — parry chance, which opens Counterattack and blunts melee openers.
  • Entrapment 5/5 — your Frost Trap and Immolation Trap can root.
  • Survivalist 1/5 — one point of extra health with the last Survival point.
  • Improved Wing Clip 3/3 — a root chance on Wing Clip.
  • Clever Traps 1/2 — one point for longer Frost Trap effects.
  • Surefooted 3/3 — hit and resistance to slows and roots.
  • Deterrence 1/1 — more dodge and parry when melee reach you.
  • Counterattack 1/1 — a root after you parry, to get away.

Key abilities

  • Scatter Shot: peel a melee, then trap or step back into range.
  • Concussive Shot: your main slow; Improved Concussive Shot adds a stun chance.
  • Viper Sting: drain a healer’s or caster’s mana.
  • Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot: burst on low-armor targets.
  • Frost Trap with Entrapment: area roots on flags and chokes.
  • Feign Death: drop targets, then Freezing Trap a melee.
  • Deterrence: survive a melee burst window.

Matchups

  • Warrior · Concussive Shot, Frost Trap and Scatter Shot keep them away; Deterrence during their Mortal Strike window.
  • Rogue · Survive the opener with Deterrence, Scatter Shot, then a trap; never fight them in the dead zone.
  • Mage · Burst from max range and Viper Sting; Hawk Eye outranges their spells.
  • Warlock · Viper Sting and Aimed Shot burst; their Felhunter and fears make long fights bad for you.
  • Priest · Viper Sting kills their mana; burst through Power Word: Shield with Aimed Shot.
  • Paladin · Viper Sting before and after Divine Shield; kite with Concussive Shot.
  • Druid · Shapeshifting breaks slows; Scatter Shot a heal and burst in caster form.
  • Shaman · Viper Sting and range; kill Grounding Totem before Scatter Shot.
  • Hunter · Range and trap timing decide it; Scatter Shot their pet or them to land Aimed Shot.

Resources and cooldowns

Every control tool costs mana. Prioritise Viper Sting on healers and traps on melee over damage shots, and keep enough mana for Feign Death, a trap and Scatter Shot. If a fight drags on, disengage with Feign Death and let your team take over rather than run dry mid-fight.

Gear

The datamine’s Hunter PvP sets, Champion’s Pursuit and Lieutenant Commander’s Pursuit, give +20 Agility at 2 pieces, 1 sec off Concussive Shot at 4 pieces and +20 Stamina at 6 pieces. How PvP gear is earned in Forever is not announced. This build values the Concussive Shot bonus most. Look for Stamina, Agility and a high-damage ranged weapon, then hit.

Legacy planner

Two Resourcefulness nodes matter for PvP players: For Great Honor (more Honor) and The Quick and the Dead (free spells after a resurrection until you enter combat). Both are unconfirmed beta data in the Legacy planner.

Consumables and engineering

  • Free Action Potion against stuns and roots.
  • Swiftness Potion to regain range.
  • Major Mana Potion for long fights.
  • Engineering: grenades and the net projector for extra control, and rocket boots to kite.
