Overview
Level 60 · Protection Paladin · Tank in dungeons and raids.
In Classic 1.12 a Protection Paladin could hold a pack of mobs with Consecration and Holy Shield but struggled on raid bosses: no taunt, poor mana sustain and weak single-target threat. WoW Forever rebuilds the spec around those gaps. Seal of Fury gives you a shield, and Improved Seal of Fury turns that shield into mana when it absorbs a hit. Shield Specialization refunds mana on blocks, Swift Judgement resets Judgement, Iron Creed makes Holy Strike a threat and damage reduction button, Templar’s Bulwark is an absorb for your whole health, and Holy Shield caps the tree. Consecration is also baseline in Forever according to Blizzard’s pre-release previews. Whether Paladins get a taunt is not in this site’s data, so treat boss tanking as untested.
Your job in the group
You tank. In dungeons you are one of the best at holding many mobs, because Consecration, Holy Shield and Seal of Fury all work on every attacker. In raids, expect to start on adds and trash packs and prove yourself on bosses once the beta shows how Forever handles Paladin threat and taunts. You also bring Blessings, Cleanse and Lay on Hands to the group.
Why play it
- Area threat. Consecration, Holy Shield’s damage on blocks and Seal of Fury on every attacker.
- Mana from being hit. Improved Seal of Fury and Shield Specialization turn incoming damage into mana.
- Large cooldowns. Templar’s Bulwark absorbs a hit as big as your health, and Lay on Hands is still there for emergencies.
- Utility. Blessings, Cleanse and Hammer of Justice for dangerous casters.
Weak points
- Taunt is unknown. If Forever gives Paladins no taunt, you rely on other tanks for boss swaps.
- Magic damage skips blocks, so it neither generates mana from Shield Specialization nor gets reduced by Redoubt.
- Forbearance. Templar’s Bulwark applies it, so it blocks Divine Shield and Blessing of Protection on you for a minute.
Level 60 talent build
Holy 8 / Protection 43 / Retribution 0, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.
Protection (43)
- Toughness 5/5 — more armor from items.
- Redoubt 5/5 — more blocks after being crit, which also means more mana from Shield Specialization.
- Precision 3/3 — hit so your Judgements and Holy Strikes land for threat.
- Anticipation 5/5 — Defense against boss crits and crushing blows.
- Improved Seal of Fury 1/1 — mana back whenever the Seal of Fury shield is fully absorbed.
- Improved Righteous Fury 3/3 — less damage taken while Righteous Fury is on, which a tank always has.
- Shield Specialization 3/3 — a stronger shield absorb and mana on blocks.
- Sacred Duty 2/2 — Stamina and shorter Divine Shield, Divine Protection and Templar’s Bulwark cooldowns.
- Swift Judgement 1/1 — resets Judgement and makes the next one free, a threat burst on pull.
- One-Handed Weapon Specialization 3/3 — more one-hander damage, and so more threat.
- Templar’s Bulwark 1/1 — an absorb as large as your health for a short window; applies Forbearance.
- Reckoning 5/5 — extra attacks after blocks and crits against you.
- Iron Creed 5/5 — more threat from Holy Strike and damage reduction when Righteous Fury is on.
- Holy Shield 1/1 — more blocks and Holy damage on every block.
Holy (8)
- Improved Holy Strike 2/2 — Holy Strike comes back sooner, which Iron Creed rewards.
- Divine Intellect 3/5 — a larger mana pool for long pulls.
- Improved Seals 3/3 — more damage from Seals and Judgements, and so more threat.
Flexible points: Reckoning is the most swingy talent here; if you want more survival, move points to Guardian’s Favor or Improved Hammer of Justice. Holy-tree points can go into Divine Strength for more block value from Strength instead of mana.
Rotation and priority
- Before the pull: Righteous Fury, Devotion Aura, Seal of Fury and your Blessing.
- Pull: Judgement, then Swift Judgement to judge again right away for an early threat lead.
- Holy Shield always active while you are tanking.
- Holy Strike on cooldown, since Iron Creed turns it into threat and damage reduction.
- Consecration on packs and whenever mana allows on single targets.
- Keep Seal of Fury up and Judgement on cooldown.
- Several mobs: gather them into Consecration, keep Holy Shield up and let blocks and seals spread threat.
Cooldowns
- Templar’s Bulwark before a known damage spike; it applies Forbearance.
- Lay on Hands as the last emergency heal.
- Hammer of Justice on casters or dangerous adds.
- Divine Shield as a wipe-saver; Sacred Duty shortens it, and it shares Forbearance with Templar’s Bulwark.
Resources
Protection mana comes from being hit: Improved Seal of Fury refunds mana when its shield breaks and Shield Specialization refunds mana on blocks, and Redoubt and Holy Shield push your block chance up. That means large pulls sustain you and single slow bosses can drain you. On long single-target fights, skip Consecration when mana is low and let Holy Strike and Judgement carry threat.
Stat priority
Start with Defense until raid bosses can no longer crit you, then Stamina and armor. Block chance and Block Value come next, because blocks give you mana, Holy Shield damage and Reckoning attacks. After that, hit for Judgement and Holy Strike, then spell power and Strength for threat. Intellect is a reasonable secondary stat for mana on long fights.
Gear and set bonuses
Justice Battleplate is the Protection Tier 1 set in the beta datamine: 2 pieces give +7 Defense, 3 pieces take 1.5 sec off Turn Undead’s cast, 4 pieces reduce the chance your attacks are dodged or parried by 1.2%, and 5 pieces shorten Forbearance by 10 sec whenever you gain it. That last bonus pairs directly with Templar’s Bulwark. The datamine also lists spell effects called Holy Shield Block Value Increase, Steadfast and Swift Judgement Cooldown Reduction without saying which items carry them, and the relic Libram of the Wild Sky, which lowers Holy Strike’s cooldown when you Judge beasts.
Consumables and professions
- Stamina and armor: Elixir of Superior Defense, Elixir of Fortitude and Stamina food.
- Damage reduction: Greater Stoneshield Potion.
- Mana: Major Mana Potion and Mageblood Potion on long bosses.
- Spell power: Greater Arcane Elixir for more Consecration and Holy Shield threat once you are safe.
- Professions: Blacksmithing for plate and shields, or Engineering for utility.
