Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.

The duo at a glance

Paladin & Mage Duo for levels 30–60: a Protection Paladin who gathers packs into Consecration and a Frost Mage who kills them with Blizzard.

This is spell cleave shrunk to two players. The Paladin runs through several mobs, stops on one spot and holds them with Consecration, Holy Shield and Judgement taunts; the Mage slows the whole pack with Improved Blizzard and finishes it with Cone of Cold. A normal Frost Mage has to kite every AoE pull and loses it when one mob breaks loose; with a Paladin holding the pack, the Mage just stands and channels. The duo starts at 30 because this is when both halves are online: the Paladin has Templar’s Bulwark and Swift Judgement, and the Mage has Improved Blizzard, Arctic Reach and Improved Cone of Cold. Before 30, level together normally. Paladins are Alliance-only, so this is an Alliance duo.

Role Spec Job
Tank Protection Paladin Gathers camps, holds them with Consecration and Holy Shield, taunts breakers back with Judgement
DPS Frost Mage Improved Blizzard on the Paladin, Frost Nova on breakers, Cone of Cold to finish, food and water

Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.

How the paladin & mage duo plays

  1. Gather, then stop. The Paladin tags three to six mobs of the same camp and stops next to a wall, tree or rock so they stack on one side instead of circling.
  2. Consecration first, Blizzard second. Consecration and one Judgement go out, then the Mage starts Blizzard centred on the Paladin. Frost Channeling cuts Frost threat by 30%, but a Blizzard before any Consecration tick still pulls mobs off the tank.
  3. The Mage handles escapes. A mob that breaks towards the Mage gets Frost Nova; the Paladin taunts it back with Judgement and Swift Judgement.
  4. Finish with Cone of Cold. When the pack is below a quarter of its health, the Mage steps in and Cone of Cold ends it instead of a second full Blizzard.
  5. Drink together. Mage water covers both of you. A Paladin who gets mana back from blocks still needs a drink after two or three big pulls.

Your job as Protection Paladin

You are the wall the Mage’s Blizzard depends on. Mages can only AoE what stands still, so your whole job is to gather, stop, and keep every mob looking at you. WoW Forever makes Consecration baseline and gives Protection the Seal of Fury, which lets Judgement work as a taunt, so all your talent points go into surviving and staying in mana. In a duo nobody heals you, which is why this build takes Shield Specialization for mana on every block, Improved Righteous Fury and Reckoning for more threat and less damage, and Templar’s Bulwark as your answer to a pull that got too big. Blessings last an hour in Forever: Blessing of Wisdom on the Mage before the first pull.

Pull by pull

  • Righteous Fury and Seal of Fury on. Check the Mage’s mana, then run through the camp tagging each mob once.
  • Stop with a wall or tree at your back so the mobs cannot circle behind you and out of Blizzard.
  • Consecration, then Judgement the mob furthest from you. Holy Shield from 42 before the damage spikes.
  • When a mob runs for the Mage, Judgement it back; if Judgement is on cooldown, Swift Judgement resets it.
  • On a pull that is going wrong, Templar’s Bulwark early, not at 10% health.

Mistakes that get the duo killed

  • Stopping in the open: the pack forms a ring and half of it stands outside Blizzard.
  • Using Templar’s Bulwark right after Divine Protection or Divine Shield: it applies Forbearance for a minute, and so do they.
  • Gathering a second camp while the Mage is below half mana because you still feel fine.
  • Moving during Blizzard: the chill slows the pack, and every step you take drags part of it out of the storm.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–12 · Toughness 3/5 — More armor from your leveling gear, which is the cheapest protection against a whole pack hitting you.
  • Levels 13–14 · Redoubt 2/5 — 30% more block after you take a critical strike. Blocks later give mana through Shield Specialization.
  • Levels 15–17 · Precision 3/3 — +3% hit so your Judgement taunts and melee threat land.
  • Levels 18–19 · Anticipation 2/5 — Defense skill: fewer crits and more avoidance against large pulls.
  • Level 20 · Improved Seal of Fury 1/1 — Mana back whenever Seal of Fury’s shield is fully absorbed. With six mobs hitting you, it breaks constantly.
  • Levels 21–23 · Improved Righteous Fury 3/3 — 6% less damage taken while Righteous Fury is on, which it always is.
  • Level 24 · Sacred Duty 1/2 — +4% Stamina and a 60 sec shorter cooldown on Divine Shield, Divine Protection and Templar’s Bulwark.
  • Level 25 · Swift Judgement 1/1 — Resets Judgement for a second taunt and makes it free: the button for a mob that keeps running at the Mage.
  • Levels 26–28 · One-Handed Weapon Specialization 3/3 — +9% damage with a one-handed weapon. Damage is threat, and threat keeps Blizzard off the Mage.
  • Level 29 · Sacred Duty 2/2 — finish the talent.
  • Level 30 · Templar’s Bulwark 1/1 — An absorb shield worth your full health for 8 sec. Nobody heals you in this duo, so this is your healer.
  • Levels 31–33 · Redoubt 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 34–36 · Shield Specialization 3/3 — Blocks restore 6% of your maximum mana, at most once every 3 sec. In a gathered pull you block all the time, so this pays for Consecration.
  • Levels 37–41 · Iron Creed 5/5 — +25% Holy Strike threat and 10% less damage taken for 6 sec after Holy Strike with Righteous Fury on.
  • Level 42 · Holy Shield 1/1 — More block, Holy damage on every block and extra threat on that damage. More blocks also mean more Shield Specialization mana.
  • Levels 43–47 · Reckoning 5/5 — A chance for an extra attack after blocking and a guaranteed one after a critical strike: more threat on every mob in the pile.
  • Levels 48–49 · Toughness 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 50–52 · Anticipation 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 53–57 · Divine Intellect (Holy) 5/5 — +10% Intellect from the Holy tree: a deeper mana pool for longer pulls.
  • Levels 58–60 · Improved Seals (Holy) 3/3 — +15% Seal and Judgement damage, which is also more threat for Seal of Fury tanking.

Where to level

30–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Dustwallow Marsh have camps that stand close enough to gather. Scarlet Monastery Graveyard (31–37) and Library (34–40) work as duo AoE runs at the top of their range. 40–50: Tanaris, Feralas and the Hinterlands. Zul’Farrak (45–51) is the classic Paladin and Mage dungeon: the pyramid stair event sends waves of trolls up the steps. In Krol’dok Stronghold (40–55), pull one pack first to check that chills and Frost Nova hold. 50–60: Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, Winterspring and Eastern Plaguelands, with Blackrock Depths (52–60) and Blackmaw Hold (55–60) in a full group.

Where the duo struggles

  • Ranged casters do not stack on the Paladin. Break line of sight so they walk in, or kill them one at a time before gathering the rest.
  • Immune or root-breaking mobs (elementals and anything that ignores slows) make Blizzard kiting fail. Tank them in melee and use Frostbolt.
  • Single elites and bosses turn the duo into a slow single-target pair. Frostbolt from range while the Paladin keeps the boss turned away.
  • Overpulls when both are low on mana are how this duo dies. Skip a camp rather than start it at half mana.
