Overview
Level 60 · Survival Hunter · DPS in dungeons and raids.
In Classic, Survival raiding meant a ranged Hunter with Lightning Reflexes for Agility, a support role that brought traps and stayed alive. WoW Forever’s Survival tree adds a lot of melee (Predator’s Edge, Strider Kick, Expose Prey and the Lacerating Strikes capstone), which suggests a melee Hunter is possible, but nobody can test that at 60 yet. This guide stays with the ranged Survival Hunter: Improved Tracking adds damage against the tracked creature type, Surefooted gives hit, Survivalist’s Discipline shortens trap and Deterrence cooldowns, Resourcefulness makes traps cheap, and Lightning Reflexes still caps the damage side.
Your job in the group
You are ranged damage with the best trap kit in the raid. On bosses, shoot like any Hunter and track the boss’s creature type for Improved Tracking. On trash and in dungeons, you are the crowd control: Freezing Trap on an add, Frost Trap to slow runners, and Feign Death to reset threat. You are also the Hunter who survives mistakes, with Survivalist’s extra health and Deterrence.
Why play it
- Trap control on shorter cooldowns and at low mana cost.
- Damage against known targets from Improved Tracking, since most bosses have a known creature type.
- Agility scaling from Lightning Reflexes improves Attack Power and crit together.
- Survivability: Survivalist’s health and Deterrence.
Weak points
- Less shot damage than Marksmanship, since Barrage, Ranged Weapon Specialization and Sniper Shot are out of reach.
- Improved Tracking does nothing against creature types you cannot track.
- The melee half of the tree is unused in this ranged plan.
Level 60 talent build
Beast Mastery 0 / Marksmanship 21 / Survival 30, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.
Survival (30)
- Improved Tracking 5/5 — more damage against the creature type you track.
- Entrapment 1/5 — a root chance on Frost Trap for runners.
- Survivalist 5/5 — more health for raid damage.
- Clever Traps 2/2 — longer Freezing Trap and Frost Trap effects for crowd control.
- Surefooted 3/3 — hit from talents.
- Deterrence 1/1 — an emergency defense against adds that reach you.
- Survival Tactics 2/2 — traps and Feign Death resist less often.
- Counterattack 1/1 — a filler point to reach the next tier.
- Resourcefulness 2/2 — cheaper traps and some mana regeneration while casting after crits.
- Expose Prey 1/2 — one point to open the Lightning Reflexes tier; its Mongoose Bite proc is a melee bonus.
- Survivalist’s Discipline 2/2 — shorter trap and Deterrence cooldowns.
- Lightning Reflexes 5/5 — a large Agility bonus for Attack Power and crit.
Marksmanship (21)
- Careful Aim 5/5 — Attack Power from Intellect.
- Efficiency 3/5 — cheaper shots.
- Lethal Attacks 5/5 — crit for all attacks.
- Rapid Killing 2/2 — a shorter Rapid Fire cooldown.
- Trueshot Aura 1/1 — party ranged Attack Power.
- Mortal Shots 5/5 — bigger ranged crits.
Flexible points: A raid with enough trap users can move Survival Tactics and Entrapment into Deflection or Improved Wing Clip. If the melee Survival Hunter proves viable in testing, Predator’s Edge, Expose Prey and Lacerating Strikes are the talents to build around.
Rotation and priority
- Before the pull: Aspect of the Hawk, tracking set to the boss’s creature type, Hunter’s Mark, Trueshot Aura.
- Traps on trash first: Freezing Trap on the assigned add, then pull.
- Auto Shot all fight without clipping.
- Multi-Shot and Arcane Shot on cooldown between Auto Shots.
- Serpent Sting on long fights.
- Aimed Shot when you have the time and mana.
- Feign Death, then a trap when an add breaks loose toward the healers.
Cooldowns
- Rapid Fire early in a boss fight.
- Freezing Trap on crowd control assignments, re-trapping with Survivalist’s Discipline.
- Deterrence if an add reaches you.
Resources
Survival spends mana on traps as well as shots. Resourcefulness makes traps cheap and returns some regeneration while casting after crits, and Efficiency lowers shot costs. Let traps take priority on trash and damage shots on bosses; on long bosses, drop Arcane Shot before Serpent Sting.
Stat priority
Hit up to the Classic raid hit cap, counting Surefooted. Agility next, since Lightning Reflexes multiplies it into Attack Power and crit. Then critical strike, Attack Power and Intellect (Careful Aim). Stamina ranks higher than for Marksmanship because this build expects to survive crowd control duty close to adds.
Gear and set bonuses
Wildstalker Armor is the Hunter Tier 1 set in the beta datamine, shared by all three specs: 2 pieces give 1% attack and casting speed, 3 pieces take 3 sec off Frost Trap and Freezing Trap, 4 pieces give +36 Attack Power against Beasts, and 5 pieces take 1 sec off Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot. The 3-piece bonus’s shorter Frost Trap and Freezing Trap cooldowns stack with Survivalist’s Discipline, which makes this the spec that gets the most from it. Before raid tier, the Beaststalker and Beastmaster dungeon sets add Attack Power and mana.
Legacy planner
No Legacy node changes traps or shots. Gourmand makes Agility food last longer and Reinforce lowers durability loss on wipes. Both are unconfirmed beta data in the Legacy planner.
Consumables and professions
- Agility: Elixir of the Mongoose and Elixir of Greater Agility; Lightning Reflexes makes Agility buffs worth more.
- Mana: Major Mana Potion and runes.
- Ammo in bulk and a scope on your weapon.
- Professions: Engineering or Skinning with Leatherworking.
