Overview

Level 60 · Survival Hunter in battlegrounds and world PvP.

Classic’s Survival PvP Hunter was the answer to melee: Improved Wing Clip could root, Deterrence and Counterattack punished anyone who reached you, and Lightning Reflexes kept damage high. WoW Forever’s tree keeps those and adds Survivalist’s Discipline, which shortens trap and Deterrence cooldowns, and Survival Tactics, which makes traps and Feign Death resisted less. With 21 Marksmanship points for Hawk Eye, Improved Concussive Shot and Scatter Shot, this is the Hunter who wants melee to come to them.

Your role in a fight

You are the melee counter and the trap wall. Stand near your healers or your flag, let Warriors and Rogues come to you, and punish them with roots, Deterrence and Counterattack. In group fights, Frost Trap with Entrapment and Clever Traps turns an area into a slow, rooted zone.

Darkspear Islands

Blizzard describes the Darkspear Islands as a 15 vs 15 battleground with control points and Arathi Basin-style flag captures and defense. Survival’s shorter trap cooldowns make it the best Hunter for guarding a flag: a Frost Trap on the flag, a Freezing Trap on the first attacker and Deterrence when melee jump you buy the time your team needs.

Honor and ranks: WoW Forever is reported to bring a 14-rank Honor track, earned from battlegrounds and PvP content. Thresholds, weekly caps and decay are not announced; see the PvP and honor hub for what is confirmed.

Strengths

  • Melee counter: Wing Clip roots, Deterrence, Counterattack and Scatter Shot.
  • Traps more often with Survivalist’s Discipline, resisted less with Survival Tactics.
  • Durable: Survivalist’s health and Lightning Reflexes’ dodge.

Weak points

  • Casters ignore Deterrence and Counterattack; you have to win on range and Viper Sting.
  • Less burst than Marksmanship PvP.
  • Positioning matters; traps only work where enemies have to walk.

Level 60 PvP talent build

Beast Mastery 0 / Marksmanship 21 / Survival 30, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.

Survival (30)

  • Deflection 5/5 — parry chance against melee, and every parry makes Counterattack available.
  • Entrapment 5/5 — Frost Trap and Immolation Trap can root.
  • Survivalist 1/5 — a point of extra health to reach the Lightning Reflexes tier.
  • Improved Wing Clip 3/3 — Wing Clip can root melee in place.
  • Clever Traps 2/2 — longer Frost Trap and Freezing Trap effects.
  • Surefooted 3/3 — hit and resistance to slows and roots.
  • Deterrence 1/1 — survive melee burst.
  • Survival Tactics 2/2 — traps and Feign Death resisted less often.
  • Counterattack 1/1 — a root after parrying.
  • Survivalist’s Discipline 2/2 — shorter trap and Deterrence cooldowns.
  • Lightning Reflexes 5/5 — Agility for damage, crit and dodge.

Marksmanship (21)

  • Hawk Eye 3/3 — more range to kite.
  • Improved Concussive Shot 5/5 — a stun chance on Concussive Shot.
  • Improved Stings 2/3 — a shorter Viper Sting cooldown.
  • Lethal Attacks 5/5 — crit for your shots.
  • Mortal Shots 5/5 — bigger ranged crits.
  • Scatter Shot 1/1 — a disorient to peel or interrupt.

Key abilities

  • Wing Clip: slow and possibly root a melee next to you, then step back.
  • Deterrence: when melee burst starts.
  • Counterattack: root after a parry to escape.
  • Frost Trap: on flags and chokes, rooting with Entrapment.
  • Freezing Trap: after Feign Death on a melee.
  • Scatter Shot: peel a second attacker.
  • Viper Sting: against healers and casters.

Matchups

  • Warrior · Wing Clip, step away, Concussive Shot; Deterrence when they land Hamstring and burst.
  • Rogue · Deterrence after their opener, Counterattack on a parry, then trap.
  • Paladin · Blessing of Freedom breaks your roots; Viper Sting their mana and kite through Divine Shield.
  • Druid · Shapeshifting breaks roots; trap them when they return to caster form.
  • Mage · Deterrence does nothing; Viper Sting, range and Scatter Shot on their casts.
  • Warlock · Fears and dots beat traps; Viper Sting and burst before the fear chain starts.
  • Priest · Viper Sting and pressure; Psychic Scream breaks your melee plan, so stay at range.
  • Shaman · Kill Grounding and Earthbind totems, Viper Sting, and Wing Clip if they melee.
  • Hunter · Trap timing wins; watch their Feign Death and Freezing Trap.

Resources and cooldowns

Traps are cheaper with Survivalist’s Discipline’s shorter cooldowns but still cost mana, so keep enough for Feign Death plus one trap and Wing Clip. Let your team do most of the damage while you control, and use Viper Sting only on targets that actually rely on mana.

Gear

The datamine’s Hunter PvP sets, Champion’s Pursuit and Lieutenant Commander’s Pursuit, give +20 Agility at 2 pieces, 1 sec off Concussive Shot at 4 pieces and +20 Stamina at 6 pieces. How PvP gear is earned in Forever is not announced. Survival wants Agility above the set’s other stats because Lightning Reflexes multiplies it; Stamina comes next.

Consumables and engineering

  • Free Action Potion against roots and stuns.
  • Greater Stoneshield Potion or Limited Invulnerability Potion against melee burst.
  • Swiftness Potion to regain range.
  • Engineering: grenades and the net projector for more control.
