World of Warcraft: Forever revealed as a permanent new home for original Azeroth

Blizzard used BlizzCon 2026 to unveil World of Warcraft: Forever, a full new version of the game set on the original continents. Instead of chasing a higher level cap, it is designed to keep expanding at level 60. The game arrives on November 4, and a beta opens on Thursday, September 17.

A third branch of WoW

Blizzard’s announcement presents Forever as a separate, permanent game that runs next to modern WoW and WoW Classic rather than replacing either one. The studio is pitching it to lapsed veterans, current subscribers and complete newcomers, with the open world and the community put ahead of racing to the finish line.

Windows Central calls it Blizzard’s answer to the long-running community demand for “Classic+”. The outlet also sees it as a much bigger swing than the earlier Season of Discovery experiment.

Where it fits in the story

Forever takes place after the Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom campaign and before Molten Core. Characters level to 60 on the original continents, and progression carries on from there through new stories and updates.

According to Windows Central, the plan is horizontal growth: more raids, quests and activities added at the same cap instead of new levels. The outlet adds that it is still unclear whether Forever sits on its own timeline apart from modern WoW, which would give Blizzard’s writers freedom to go their own way.

New content confirmed so far

Blizzard’s own recap of the BlizzCon panels mentions new regions, dungeons, raids and systems, plus a new playable race called the Skyborne. Windows Central puts firmer numbers on the reveal:

• three classic zones reworked, and three brand-new zones on top
• three new raids
• a new battleground
• “thousands” of new quests, including fresh content in existing zones
• the Skyborne, a new elven race with its own Zephras Isle starting area

Keep in mind that the Skyborne race is unlocked through the paid upgrade packs rather than the base game.

Blizzard’s reveal article is not perfectly consistent. It lists the launch time as both PDT and PST, and its closing line refers to a beta “beginning November 17”, which clashes with the September 17 date used everywhere else in the same post. September 17 is the date to trust for now.

At launch, playing Forever only needs an active WoW subscription or Game Time. Three optional upgrades are on the Battle.net Shop: the Skyborne Heroic Pack, the Skyborne Epic Pack and the limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection. Only the Epic Pack and the Collection come with beta access. A physical Collector’s Edition is also sold through the Blizzard Gear Store while stock lasts.

Blizzard’s community team has opened a reveal thread on both the US and EU forums, promising to collect everything known about Forever in one place. It is worth bookmarking as further posts and panel recaps appear.

What it means for players

If you already subscribe, Forever costs nothing extra to play when it launches, so the real question is whether early beta time and the Skyborne are worth an upgrade. With the cap locked at 60 and new content promised to spread sideways, characters you build should stay relevant far longer than in a normal expansion cycle.
