Experience changes that affect this route
The beta changed the leveling maths twice in October, so advice written in September no longer holds. Each entry is what Blizzard wrote, with our reading of it marked separately. Last change .
- The target is parity with questing, not Classic Era dungeon speedAnnounced, not in a build yet
Blizzard's stated aim: after these changes, perfect experience-per-hour dungeon play should land very close to, if not equal to, optimal questing. It also said dungeon experience will not return to Classic Era levels, because dungeon spam being the optimal path fails its design pillars.
What it means for your route: Plan a mixed route. Dungeons are for the levels where an instance sits on your path and the group is close to your level; questing carries the levels in between. A pure dungeon run to 60 is being balanced out of the game on purpose.

Legacy Points while you level
UnconfirmedWhere to spend Warlock Legacy Points for solo questing, in the order the points arrive. A character can spend 16, and an account can earn 65 at launch. Stop wherever your total is — the list is cumulative. Effects are quoted from the Beta client 1.60.1.70532 data.
- 1.1 point · 1/16
Well Restedrank 1 · Adventure
Your rested experience accumulates 4% faster and your rested experience cap is increased by 4%.
Only one point here for now — it is the prerequisite for Talented, and rested experience is worth having while you are at it.
- 2.5 points · 6/16
Talentedrank 5 · Adventure
You gain talent points every level starting at level 5 instead of starting at level 10, but you still may not have more than 51 total talent points.
The strongest leveling node in the tree: talent points from level 5 instead of 10, so you reach your first real build five levels sooner.
- 3.5 points · 11/16
Thrill of Adventurerank 5 · Adventure
You gain 5% of your maximum Health and Mana over 10 sec each time you deliver the killing blow to a non-trivial enemy. Ineffective in dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds.
5% of your health and mana back on every killing blow. Solo questing is mostly downtime between fights, and this is the node that removes it. It does nothing in dungeons, raids or battlegrounds.
- 4.1 point · 12/16
Field Guiderank 1 · Adventure
Reduces your cooldown on adding Camp features by 8%
Prerequisite for Frequent Flier, and shortens the wait between camp features.
- 5.1 point · 13/16
Frequent Flierrank 1 · Adventure
You receive a 50% discount on all flight paths, and your flight path mount flies 20% faster.
Half-price flight paths and 20% faster flights. You will fly hundreds of times before 60.
- 6.1 point · 14/16
The Quick and the Deadrank 1 · Resourcefulness
Increases movement speed while dead by 5% and your helpful spells and abilities cost no resources for 1 min after being resurrected or until you enter combat.
Prerequisite for Reagent Economy, and a faster corpse run every time you die.
- 7.1 point · 15/16
Reagent Economyrank 1 · Resourcefulness
Your class abilities no longer require reagents purchaseable from vendors.
No vendor reagents for your class abilities — one less thing to buy on every trip to town.
- 8.1 point · 16/16
Well Restedrank 2 · Adventure
Your rested experience accumulates 8% faster and your rested experience cap is increased by 8%.
The last point goes back into rested experience.
What to skip, and why
- Permanence: Its party-buff half does nothing alone; the camp rest half is not worth three points while you are questing.
- For Great Honor: Honor only, so it waits until you start battlegrounds.
- Diplomat: Reputation matters at 60, not on the way there.
- High Alert, Field Medicine: Stealth detection and bandage timers are situational; neither changes how fast you level.
Variants
- If you gather while you level, one or two points in Bountiful Harvest (20% more scarce materials per rank, Mining, Herbalism and Skinning) pay for your mounts; take them out of the last picks on this list.
- Levelling in dungeons instead? Thrill of Adventure is dead weight there — the dungeon plan on any dungeon leveling guide spends those five points on Permanence, Reinforce and faster corpse runs.
Legacy values are datamined from the beta client and can change. Plan your own spread in the Legacy planner, see where points come from inLegacy Points, or read the Legacy system guide. The order above is our recommendation; the effects are game data.

Overview
Levels 30–60 · Destruction Warlock, solo questing and grinding.
This is the kill-it-before-it-arrives Warlock. Instead of waiting for DoTs, you apply instant Corruption, open with Immolate and Conflagrate, then cast fast Shadow Bolts that crit hard. It borrows the idea of the classic SM/Ruin leveling hybrid (Improved Corruption, Suppression, Nightfall from Affliction; Bane, Ruin and Shadowburn from Destruction) and rebuilds it with Destruction as the main tree, because the WoW Forever Destruction tree is much stronger for Shadow Bolt: Improved Shadow Bolt crits make the target take 20% more Shadow damage from you for 60 sec, Bane takes 0.5 sec off Shadow Bolt and Immolate, and Shadow and Flame turns every Conflagrate into 10% more Shadow damage for 20 sec without consuming Immolate. Molten Skin cuts the damage you take for when mobs reach you. The guide is written for levels 30–60, when Ruin, Conflagrate and Shadow and Flame come online and the burst playstyle clearly pays off; the same order works from 10 if you like the playstyle early.
Why this build
- Fast single-target kills. Most mobs die before they reach you, so your pet rarely needs to tank.
- Big crits. Ruin doubles the crit damage bonus of Destruction spells, and Improved Shadow Bolt amplifies every Shadow Bolt after the first crit.
- Less reliant on the pet. An Imp or Succubus for extra damage works fine; the Voidwalker is only needed for bad pulls.
- Molten Skin and Intensity keep you casting through the hits you do take.
Weak spots
- More downtime than Affliction: Shadow Bolt is expensive and there is no Siphon Life healing.
- Multiple mobs are dangerous. No drain tank loop; use Fear, the Voidwalker or Howl of Terror.
- Soul Shards go fast if you rely on Shadowburn as a finisher; Shadow and Flame refunds them, but only at 5/5.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10 to 60. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Improved Corruption (Affliction) 5/5 — Instant Corruption with 10% more damage at 5/5: the one DoT worth casting in a burst build.
- Levels 15–19 · Improved Shadow Bolt 5/5 — Shadow Bolt crits make the target take 20% more Shadow damage from you for 12 sec at 5/5, so each crit boosts the next few Shadow Bolts.
- Levels 20–24 · Bane 5/5 — 0.5 sec faster Shadow Bolt, Immolate and Incinerate and 2 sec faster Soul Fire at 5/5.
- Levels 25–26 · Improved Life Tap (Affliction) 2/2 — 20% more mana from Life Tap to pay for Shadow Bolts.
- Levels 27–29 · Molten Skin 3/5 — 6% less damage taken from every source at 3/5: cheap safety for when a mob reaches you.
- Levels 30–34 · Ruin 5/5 — Doubles the critical strike damage bonus of Destruction spells at 5/5.
- Level 35 · Shadowburn 1/1 — Instant Shadow damage to finish a mob before it reaches you; if the target dies you get the Soul Shard back.
- Levels 36–38 · Cataclysm 3/3 — 10% cheaper Destruction spells at 3/3, the main mana relief for this build.
- Level 39 · Conflagrate 1/1 — Instant Fire damage on an Immolated target; with Shadow and Flame it becomes a buff and keeps Immolate ticking.
- Levels 40–41 · Intensity 2/3 — 70% chance to resist pushback on all Destruction spells at 3/3: keep casting Shadow Bolt while a mob hits you.
- Levels 42–46 · Shadow and Flame 5/5 — Conflagrate hits give +10% Shadow damage for 20 sec and never consume Immolate at 5/5; Shadowburn gives +10% Fire damage and refunds its Soul Shard.
- Level 47 · Intensity 3/3 — finish the talent.
- Levels 48–50 · Agonizing Flames 3/3 — +10% damage on all Destruction spells and extra Searing Pain crit at 3/3.
- Levels 51–55 · Suppression (Affliction) 5/5 — +5% hit with all spells and 20% less threat at 5/5 for mobs above your level.
- Levels 56–57 · Grim Reach (Affliction) 2/2 — +10% range on Affliction spells per point.
- Level 58 · Improved Drains (Affliction) 1/3 — Drain Life, Drain Soul and Wrack drain or deal 7% more at one point.
- Levels 59–60 · Nightfall (Affliction) 2/2 — Corruption, Drain Life and Drain Soul can give Shadow Trance, making your next Shadow Bolt instant.
Key levels
- Level 30 · Ruin is being filled: Destruction crits deal much more damage. Hellfire and the Felhunter quest.
- Level 35 · Shadowburn: an instant finisher. With Shadow and Flame it also gives 10% Fire damage and refunds the Soul Shard.
- Level 39 · Conflagrate: open Immolate, Conflagrate, then Shadow Bolts.
- Level 40 · Shadow and Flame starts. Felsteed mount and Howl of Terror.
- Level 44 · Shadow and Flame 5/5: Conflagrate no longer consumes Immolate and Shadowburn always refunds its shard.
- Level 47 · Intensity full: 69% pushback protection on all Destruction spells.
- Level 50 · Agonizing Flames full: +9% Destruction damage. Suppression follows for hit against higher-level mobs.
- Level 60 · Nightfall at 59–60: Corruption ticks can give instant Shadow Bolts. Final split 17/0/34.
How to pull and kill
- Keep Demon Armor up and the Imp (Blood Pact, Firebolt) or Succubus out. Summon the Voidwalker instead for areas with many linked mobs.
- Instant Corruption on the target, then Immolate from maximum range and Conflagrate when it lands.
- Shadow Bolt until the mob is low. After the first crit, Improved Shadow Bolt makes every following Shadow Bolt hit harder for a full minute.
- Finish with Shadowburn if the mob is about to reach you, otherwise with the wand to save mana and shards.
- Use a Nightfall proc (Shadow Trance) immediately; it makes the next Shadow Bolt instant.
- For a second mob, Fear it before it reaches you, or send the pet. Life Tap and drink between fights; Destruction trades downtime for kill speed.
Leveling tips
- Levels 10–29 use the first points of this order: Improved Corruption, Improved Shadow Bolt, Bane, Improved Life Tap and Molten Skin all help normal questing.
- Spirit and Intellect gear shortens the drinking breaks that Shadow Bolt casting causes.
- Keep 5–10 Soul Shards for Shadowburn, Healthstones and Soulstones; Drain Soul a few mobs whenever you run low.
- Imp for questing, Succubus for burst, Voidwalker for anything that looks like more than two mobs.
- Quest zones: Arathi, Stranglethorn and Desolace in the 30s, Tanaris, Feralas and the Hinterlands in the 40s, Un’Goro, Felwood, Winterspring and the Plaguelands to 60.
- Dungeons: the same build is fine for group play. Razorfen Downs, Uldaman and Zul’Farrak fit the 40s; Sunken Temple and Blackrock Depths the 50s.
After level 60
At 60 this is already close to a raid Shadow Bolt build. For dungeon AoE, move points from Nightfall and Grim Reach into Pyroclasm and Aftermath for Hellfire and Rain of Fire.
