Overview

Level 60 · Feral Combat Druid · Tank in dungeons and raids.

Bear tanks in Classic had lots of armor and health but weak threat and no way to avoid crits reliably. The WoW Forever Feral Combat tree gives bears a real toolkit. Mangle is a strong threat attack, Natural Reaction adds 5% dodge and 5 Rage every time you dodge, Primal Fury gives Rage on crits, and Berserk lets Mangle hit up to three targets with no cooldown and grants Fear immunity for its duration. The datamined Tier 1 set even calls the bear role Guardian. The Restoration half adds Furor and Naturalist for Rage and damage.

Your job in the group

You are the main tank in a dungeon or an off-tank in a raid. Pick up every enemy at the pull with Swipe and Mangle, keep Demoralizing Roar on the boss and position enemies so melee can stand behind them. A bear has more armor and health than a Warrior but fewer emergency buttons, so tell your healer before a big pull and use Frenzied Regeneration before you are low, not after. Between tanking duties you can shift out for Innervate and Rebirth, which Warrior tanks cannot offer.

Why play it

  • Health and armor: Bear Form with Thick Hide still gives the highest armor in the game.
  • Multi-target threat: Swipe, plus Berserk turning Mangle into a three-target attack.
  • Rage from defense: Natural Reaction and Primal Fury keep Rage flowing even when you are not hit much.
  • Flexibility: off-tank in bear, switch to cat damage or caster utility such as Innervate and Rebirth.

Weak points

  • No shield: bears cannot block, so crushing blows depend on the Forever rules for Defense and armor.
  • Rage starvation when your gear outpaces the damage you take.
  • Unknown boss tuning: Hyjal Summit and Barrow Deeps encounters are not known, so it is unclear which tank they favor.
  • Healer mana: bears take more hits than warriors with shields, which costs healer mana on long fights.

Level 60 talent build

Balance 0 / Feral Combat 38 / Restoration 13, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.

Feral Combat (38)

  • Ferocity 5/5 — 5 Rage cheaper Maul, Mangle and Swipe: more threat per Rage bar.
  • Heart of the Wild 5/5 — +4% Stamina in Bear Form and 2% Intellect.
  • Feral Swiftness 2/2 — +4% dodge (and cat speed outside the raid).
  • Thick Hide 3/3 — Extra base armor in Bear Form, multiplied by the form’s armor bonus.
  • Savage Fury 2/2 — +10% damage on Maul and Swipe, which also means more threat. Required for Mangle.
  • Feral Charge 1/1 — Charge and interrupt: pick up adds and stop casters.
  • Sharpened Claws 2/2 — +6% crit in Bear Form, which Primal Fury turns into Rage.
  • Shredding Attacks 3/3 — Lacerate costs 3 less Rage.
  • Mangle 1/1 — A strong single-target attack and your main threat button.
  • Predatory Strikes 3/3 — More melee Attack Power in forms.
  • Primal Fury 2/2 — Crits in Bear Form have a chance to give 5 extra Rage.
  • Predatory Instincts 2/2 — +20% crit damage on melee abilities: more threat from crits.
  • Leader of the Pack 1/1 — +3% crit for your party and the path to Berserk.
  • Natural Reaction 5/5 — +5% dodge and 5 Rage every time you dodge.
  • Berserk 1/1 — 15 sec of Mangle hitting up to three targets with no cooldown, and immunity to Fear.

Restoration (13)

  • Furor 5/5 — 20% chance to gain 10 Rage when you shift into Bear Form.
  • Naturalist 5/5 — +5% damage from all your attacks.
  • Natural Shapeshifter 3/3 — Cheaper shapeshifting, for shifting out to heal or Innervate and back.

Rotation and priority

  1. Pull with Faerie Fire or Feral Charge, then open with Mangle.
  2. Use Mangle on cooldown on your main target; it is your strongest threat attack.
  3. Stack Lacerate between Mangles on single targets and use Maul when Rage is high.
  4. On packs, Swipe to hold everything, then Mangle the kill target. During Berserk, Mangle hits three targets with no cooldown, so spam it.
  5. Keep Demoralizing Roar on the boss and Growl immediately if you lose aggro.
  6. Use Frenzied Regeneration, Barkskin (if usable in form in WoW Forever) and Challenging Roar as your defensive cooldowns.

Resources

Rage comes from taking hits, crits (Primal Fury) and dodges (Natural Reaction), so a well-geared bear may lack Rage on easy trash; Furor and Enrage cover the start of a pull. Berserk is your threat cooldown for big packs and the opening seconds of a boss; the Tier 1 5-piece shortens its cooldown. Keep Innervate and Rebirth for raid emergencies.

Stat priority

Armor and Stamina first, to survive; then Defense until crits no longer land on you (Forever’s number is not confirmed; the Tier 1 2-piece adds Defense). Dodge next, which Natural Reaction also turns into Rage. For threat, add hit and expertise-style effects such as the Tier 1 4-piece, then Strength and Agility. Resistance gear only when a boss calls for it.

Gear and set bonuses

The datamined Tier 1 bear set is Grovekeeper Rage: +7 Defense at 2 pieces, Rebirth castable in Bear and Dire Bear Form with a 2 sec shorter cast at 3, 1.2% less chance for your attacks to be dodged or parried at 4, and a 15 sec shorter Berserk cooldown at 5. Pieces and stats are withheld. The 3-piece bonus is unusual: a combat resurrection without leaving Bear Form.

Consumables and professions

  • Survival: Elixir of Superior Defense, Flask of the Titans, Greater Stoneshield Potion and Major Healing Potion, as in Classic.
  • Threat: Juju Power and Elixir of the Mongoose for Strength and Agility; Winterfall Firewater for Attack Power.
  • Rage: Mighty Rage Potion when a pull starts slowly.
  • Professions: Leatherworking and Skinning for leather tanking gear and armor kits; Alchemy is the alternative for your own flasks.

Tips

  • Carry a caster set for Innervate and Rebirth duty when you are not tanking.
  • Cat Form damage is a good off-tank role between pulls where you are not needed.
