Overview

Level 60 · Frost Mage in battlegrounds and world PvP.

A Frost Mage wins PvP fights by deciding where and when enemies are allowed to move. Slows, Frost Nova, Frostbite freezes and Polymorph keep melee away, Improved Counterspell locks casters, and Shatter turns every freeze into burst. The WoW Forever tree adds Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost, so you get instant shattered damage while kiting instead of having to stop for a Frostbolt.

Your role in a fight

In battlegrounds you are a peeler and a defender: slow the players chasing your flag carrier or healer, Polymorph the enemy healer at the start of a fight and freeze groups that step onto a point you guard. Which Classic battlegrounds return is not announced. In world PvP, open with Polymorph on a second enemy and kill the first.

Darkspear Islands

Blizzard describes the new Darkspear Islands as a 15 vs 15 battleground off the coast of Kalimdor that mixes strategic control points with Arathi Basin-style flag captures and defense. Area control on a point is exactly where Frost Nova, Blizzard and Cone of Cold shine: stand on the point, freeze the attackers who arrive together and shatter the closest one. On flag runs, your slows are the best tool your team has to catch an enemy carrier. The map’s layout is not known yet.

Honor and ranks: WoW Forever is reported to bring a 14-rank Honor track, earned from battlegrounds and PvP content. Thresholds, weekly caps and decay are not announced; see the PvP and honor hub for what is confirmed.

Strengths

  • Best kiting kit in the game: Frostbolt and Cone of Cold slows, Frost Nova and Frostbite freezes, Blink, and Permafrost-length chills.
  • Instant burst from Fingers of Frost into Ice Lance while running.
  • Two lives with Ice Block and Cold Snap, plus Ice Barrier to cast through damage.
  • Caster lockdown with a 4 sec Improved Counterspell silence.

Weak points

  • Low health and armor: a burst from two melee at once kills you before your control recovers.
  • Trinkets and immunities: Blessing of Freedom, Will of the Forsaken and PvP trinkets undo your control.
  • Healers behind line of sight outlast your mana if you cannot reach them with Counterspell.
  • No confirmed 60 PvP content yet: the beta cap is 30 and the honor track details are not announced.

Level 60 PvP talent build

Arcane 20 / Fire 0 / Frost 31, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.

Frost (31)

  • Improved Frostbolt 5/5 — Faster Frostbolts mean shorter windows for a rogue or warrior to interrupt you.
  • Ice Shards 3/5 — More crit damage on shattered Frostbolts and Ice Lances; 3/5 leaves points for control talents.
  • Permafrost 2/3 — Longer chills with a stronger slow, so a slowed target stays slowed between casts.
  • Improved Frost Nova 2/2 — Frost Nova every 21 sec instead of 25, so almost every melee gets rooted twice per fight.
  • Frostbite 3/3 — 15% chance for any chill to freeze for 5 sec: a free Shatter window without spending Frost Nova.
  • Ice Lance 1/1 — Instant damage that deals 300% more to frozen targets: your main finisher while moving.
  • Arctic Reach 1/2 — One point for longer Frostbolt range and a wider Frost Nova and Cone of Cold.
  • Ice Block 1/1 — 10 sec of immunity. It also breaks a burst window and buys time for your healer.
  • Shatter 5/5 — +50% crit chance on frozen targets: every freeze becomes a kill window.
  • Improved Cone of Cold 2/3 — More Cone of Cold damage for the instant slow you cast when someone breaks a root.
  • Cold Snap 1/1 — Resets Ice Block and Frost Nova, which wins long duels.
  • Fingers of Frost 2/2 — Chills can make your next spell count as hitting a frozen target, so a kited melee still takes shattered Ice Lances.
  • Winter’s Chill 2/5 — Two points to reach the last row: a 40% chance per Frost spell to stack Winter’s Chill, which still helps sustained Frostbolt casting on a flag carrier.
  • Ice Barrier 1/1 — Your pushback protection: a Frostbolt or Polymorph cast under Ice Barrier finishes even while you take hits.

Arcane (20)

  • Arcane Focus 5/5 — +5% hit for Arcane spells, which covers Polymorph and Counterspell, the two spells that must not miss.
  • Magic Absorption 2/2 — Extra resistances against casters and mana back when you fully resist a spell.
  • Arcane Concentration 5/5 — Clearcasting makes the next damage spell free, which matters on long flag defenses.
  • Arcane Resilience 2/2 — Armor equal to half your Intellect helps against rogues and warriors.
  • Arcane Impact 1/3 — One point for Arcane Explosion crits when stealthed players rush a point.
  • Improved Counterspell 2/2 — Counterspell also silences for 4 sec, stopping a healer or caster from switching to another school.
  • Arcane Meditation 3/3 — 15% of mana regeneration continues while casting, for long battleground fights without drinking.

Key abilities

  • Polymorph: removes one enemy from the fight. Use it on healers before a big fight and on a second attacker in world PvP.
  • Frost Nova into Ice Lance or Frostbolt: the core burst combo; Shatter makes both crit far more often.
  • Counterspell: with Improved Counterspell it silences for 4 sec. Save it for a heal or a Polymorph on your teammate.
  • Blink: breaks stuns and roots and opens distance after Frost Nova.
  • Ice Block and Cold Snap: two immunities per fight, and Ice Block also drops you out of a bad position.
  • Eureka!: halves the mana cost of your next 3 damage spells and adds 10% damage, ideal when you commit to a kill.
  • Remove Lesser Curse on yourself and allies against warlocks.

Matchups

  • Warriors · keep them slowed and rooted; Blink after every Intercept or Charge stun and never stand in melee range without Frost Nova ready.
  • Rogues · Frost Nova and Blink after the opener, then Cone of Cold and Ice Lance. Ice Barrier lowers the damage of their stun lock.
  • Warlocks · Counterspell Fear or Shadow Bolt, Remove Lesser Curse, and Polymorph or kill their pet when possible.
  • Priests and paladins · silence the heal, then burst. Against a paladin, expect Blessing of Freedom to break your slows.
  • Hunters · fight inside their dead zone or Blink out of it; Frost Nova does not stop their ranged attacks.
  • Other mages · whoever lands Counterspell or Polymorph first usually wins. Keep Ice Block for their Shatter combo.

Resources and cooldowns

Mana ends most long PvP fights for a mage. Carry Mana Gems and conjured water, use Evocation behind a wall, and keep Eureka! for burst windows. Track Cold Snap: using it early on Frost Nova means your second Ice Block is gone.

Gear

This site’s beta datamine lists no mage PvP set yet; the Classic Champion’s and Warlord’s sets appear only for some other classes, so what the honor track gives mages is unknown. Until then, trade some spell damage for Stamina, because a Frost Mage who survives the first stun wins most duels. Spell hit keeps Polymorph and Counterspell from being resisted. The Tier 1 Manaflare Regalia has one PvP-friendly bonus: 3 pieces take 5 sec off Counterspell’s cooldown.

Consumables and engineering

  • Free Action Potion against the stuns and roots that stop you from kiting.
  • Major Mana Potion and conjured Mana Gems for long flag defenses.
  • Major Healing Potion and Heavy Runecloth Bandages between fights.
  • Engineering: nets, grenades and bombs add a stun or a root to your control chain.

Tips

  • Buy or conjure water in bulk before a long battleground session.
