Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.

Overview

Levels 20–50 · Subtlety Rogue, solo questing and grinding.

Subtlety levels by winning the fight before the mob can react. Every pull starts from Stealth: Premeditation and an Improved Ambush crit give you a full set of combo points in the first two seconds. From level 30 Hemorrhage replaces Sinister Strike and makes your Rupture hit harder, and the new Thousand Cuts capstone makes each Rupture tick cheapen your next Hemorrhage. Camouflage and Elusiveness make the build safe on PvP realms and in crowded zones: you move faster in Stealth and get Vanish back much sooner. It is slower than Combat on trash but very controlled, which makes it a good choice for careful or hardcore-style leveling.

Why this build

  • Huge openers: Ambush with Improved Ambush and Initiative, plus Premeditation, is 4–5 combo points before the mob moves.
  • Escape tools: Vanish and Blind cooldowns are 1.5 min shorter, and you can re-stealth quickly with Camouflage.
  • Armor penetration: Serrated Blades makes every attack ignore 9% of the target’s armor.
  • Energy-efficient later: Rupture ticks from Thousand Cuts keep Hemorrhage cheap on longer fights.

Weak spots

  • Slow after the opener: without Stealth (fighting adds, respawns) your damage is lower than Combat’s.
  • Ambush needs a dagger and you must be behind the mob, which is awkward with patrols.
  • Quietus is a weak talent that you take only to reach Thousand Cuts.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10 to 50. The talent tree above shows the finished level 50 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–11 · Opportunity 2/2 — +10% damage on Ambush and Garrote, your two opening strikes.
  • Levels 12–14 · Camouflage 3/5 — Smaller movement penalty in Stealth and a shorter Stealth cooldown after combat.
  • Levels 15–17 · Improved Ambush 3/3 — +45% crit chance on Ambush.
  • Levels 18–19 · Elusiveness 2/2 — Vanish and Blind cooldowns 1.5 min shorter.
  • Levels 20–22 · Initiative 3/3 — Ambush, Garrote and Cheap Shot add an extra combo point.
  • Level 23 · Ghostly Strike 1/1 — Combo-point strike that also gives 15% dodge for 7 sec; hits harder with a dagger.
  • Level 24 · Camouflage 4/5 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 25–27 · Serrated Blades 3/3 — Attacks ignore 9% of armor and Rupture deals 30% more damage.
  • Level 28 · Premeditation 1/1 — Adds 2 combo points from Stealth; use them within 20 sec.
  • Level 29 · Camouflage 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Level 30 · Hemorrhage 1/1 — Instant strike for 1 combo point (145% weapon damage with a dagger); the target takes 15% more Rupture damage for 15 sec.
  • Levels 31–32 · Dirty Deeds 2/2 — Cheap Shot and Garrote cost 20 less Energy, and Garrote no longer needs you behind the target.
  • Level 33 · Preparation 1/1 — Resets your other Rogue cooldowns, including Vanish, Evasion and Sprint.
  • Level 34 · Heightened Senses 1/2 — Better Stealth detection and 2% less chance to be hit by spells and ranged attacks.
  • Levels 35–39 · Quietus 5/5 — A small damage bonus for Hemorrhage and Ghostly Strike below 35% health; taken to reach Thousand Cuts.
  • Level 40 · Thousand Cuts 1/1 — Each Rupture tick makes your next Hemorrhage or Backstab 3 Energy cheaper, stacking up to 5 times.
  • Levels 41–45 · Malice (Assassination) 5/5 — +5% crit chance with attacks and poisons.
  • Levels 46–47 · Remorseless Attacks (Assassination) 2/2 — Extra crit chance on your next Ambush or Ghostly Strike after a kill.
  • Levels 48–50 · Ruthlessness (Assassination) 3/3 — 60% chance for a finisher to leave a combo point for the next opener.

Key levels

  • Level 17 · Improved Ambush 3/3: Ambush (level 18 in Classic) becomes an almost certain crit.
  • Level 22 · Initiative 3/3: Ambush, Garrote and Cheap Shot add an extra combo point.
  • Level 23 · Ghostly Strike: a generator that also adds 15% dodge for 7 sec.
  • Level 28 · Premeditation: 2 free combo points from Stealth, every opener.
  • Level 30 · Hemorrhage: your new main strike; it makes your Rupture deal 15% more damage.
  • Level 33 · Preparation resets Vanish, Sprint and Evasion: a second escape in one fight.
  • Level 40 · Thousand Cuts: Rupture ticks reduce the cost of your next Hemorrhage.
  • Level 45 · Malice 5/5 adds 5% crit for more Ambush and Hemorrhage crits.

How to pull and kill

  1. Stealth up and walk behind the mob. Use Premeditation, then Ambush (Cheap Shot on a mob you cannot get behind).
  2. With 5 combo points use Rupture on a mob with plenty of health, or Eviscerate if it will die in a few seconds.
  3. Keep pressing Hemorrhage (Sinister Strike before 30) and use Ghostly Strike when you are taking melee damage.
  4. Refresh Rupture before it runs out so Thousand Cuts keeps reducing Hemorrhage’s cost.
  5. When a pull goes wrong, Blind or Gouge one mob, Vanish, then open again with Premeditation and Ambush. Preparation gives you a second Vanish.

Leveling tips

  • Weapons: a dagger in the main hand for Ambush and a stronger Ghostly Strike and Hemorrhage; any fast weapon in the off hand.
  • Poisons: Instant Poison on the off hand; Crippling Poison stops runners from pulling their friends.
  • Stealth first: after each kill, re-stealth before you eat, so that a wandering mob never catches you out of Stealth.
  • Dirty Deeds makes Garrote work from the front and Cheap Shot cheaper, so a mob that turns around no longer ruins your opener.
  • Zones: Redridge Mountains and Darkshore to 25, Hillsbrad Foothills and Thousand Needles to 30, Desolace and Stranglethorn Vale to 40, then Feralas and the Hinterlands.
  • PvP realms: Camouflage and Heightened Senses let you see and avoid enemy Rogues and Druids in contested zones.

After level 50

At 50 many players respec to Combat Swords or Mutilate for faster late-game questing. If you stay Subtlety, spend the next points on Relentless Strikes and Lethality.
