Overview
Level 60 · Retribution Paladin · DPS in dungeons and raids.
Classic 1.12 Retribution was a support slot in raids: one Paladin kept Judgement of the Crusader or Wisdom on the boss and Blessings on the raid, and its damage lagged behind Warriors and Rogues because mana ran out. The WoW Forever tree attacks the mana problem and adds real damage talents. Sanctified Judgement returns mana on every Judgement, Holy Conduit makes Consecration and Exorcism cheaper, Crusade adds damage (more against demons and undead), Sacred Arbiter makes Holy Strike refresh your Judgement effects, Champion of the Light converts Intellect into spell power, and the capstone Twist of Light lets your next swing apply the Seal you just replaced. That last talent is the heart of the build: swapping Seals is no longer lost damage.
Your job in the group
You are melee damage with Paladin utility. Keep your Judgement effects on the boss and refresh them with Holy Strike, spend Seals and Judgement for damage, and bring Blessings, an aura and Cleanse on fights that need extra dispels. In dungeons, Consecration with Holy Conduit gives you useful area damage on trash, especially undead.
Why play it
- Sustained mana thanks to Sanctified Judgement, Benediction and Holy Conduit.
- Seal swaps are free damage with Twist of Light’s Echo.
- Strong against demons and undead through Crusade and Holy damage.
- Utility: Blessings, Cleanse and a spare Lay on Hands for the raid.
Weak points
- Hit dependency. A missed Judgement or melee swing costs you Vengeance uptime and mana.
- Many buttons to juggle: Seals, Judgement, Holy Strike and Twist of Light timing.
- Two stat worlds. You want Strength and crit for swings and spell power for Holy damage, which splits your gear.
Level 60 talent build
Holy 10 / Protection 8 / Retribution 33, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.
Retribution (33)
- Benediction 5/5 — cheaper Judgements and Seals, which you cast constantly.
- Improved Judgement 2/2 — Judgement more often.
- Holy Conduit 2/2 — cheaper Consecration, Exorcism, Holy Wrath and Hammer of Wrath.
- Conviction 5/5 — melee crit, which triggers Vengeance.
- Sanctified Judgement 3/3 — mana back on every Judgement.
- Seal of Command 1/1 — your main damage Seal with a two-hander.
- Sacred Arbiter 1/1 — Holy Strike hits harder and refreshes your Judgement effects on the target.
- Crusade 2/2 — more damage, with a bigger bonus against demons and undead.
- Two-Handed Weapon Specialization 3/3 — more two-hander damage.
- Vengeance 3/3 — Physical and Holy damage bonus after crits.
- Champion of the Light 3/3 — spell damage from Intellect, boosting Seals and Judgement.
- Instrument of Law 2/2 — a faster Hammer of Wrath for the execute range, and less threat when Righteous Fury is off.
- Twist of Light 1/1 — replacing a Seal gives an Echo, so your next swing still applies the old Seal.
Holy (10)
- Improved Holy Strike 2/2 — Holy Strike more often, which Sacred Arbiter rewards.
- Divine Strength 5/5 — more Strength for Attack Power and block value.
- Improved Seals 3/3 — more damage from every Seal and Judgement.
Protection (8)
- Toughness 5/5 — five points to reach Precision.
- Precision 3/3 — hit for swings, Judgements and Holy Strike.
Flexible points: Champion of the Light matters more the more Intellect you wear; on a Strength-heavy set, move those points to Pursuit of Justice or Vindication. The Holy points can become Divine Intellect if mana is short.
Rotation and priority
- Before the pull: your Blessing, aura, and the Seal you plan to judge first (Seal of the Crusader or Wisdom in Classic, when the raid needs it).
- Judge the utility Seal, then put up Seal of Command.
- Holy Strike on cooldown; Sacred Arbiter keeps your Judgement effects refreshed.
- Judgement on cooldown with Seal of Command for damage and mana back from Sanctified Judgement.
- Swap Seals right after a Judgement, so Twist of Light’s Echo applies the old Seal on your next swing.
- Consecration on packs where Holy Conduit makes it cheap; skip it on single targets when mana is short.
- Hammer of Wrath and Exorcism in the execute range or against undead and demons.
Cooldowns
- Lay on Hands on a dying healer or tank.
- Blessing of Protection on a clothie holding aggro.
- Divine Protection if you are about to die to raid damage.
Resources
Retribution mana in Forever is a loop: Judgement costs mana, Sanctified Judgement returns part of the judged Seal’s cost, and Benediction reduces both. Holy Conduit makes your spells cheap enough to use in the rotation instead of only in emergencies. Keep an eye on mana in the first minute of long fights; if it drops faster than expected, drop Consecration first and Exorcism second.
Stat priority
Hit first, until swings and Judgements stop missing bosses, because misses cost both damage and Vengeance uptime. Strength next for Attack Power, then critical strike and Agility, which trigger Vengeance. Spell power and Intellect follow, and matter more with Champion of the Light than they did in Classic. Stamina only as fights demand.
Gear and set bonuses
Justice Battlegear is the Retribution Tier 1 set in the beta datamine: 2 pieces give 1% attack and casting speed, 3 pieces take 5 sec off Hammer of Justice, 4 pieces give +36 Attack Power against Demons (the spell’s internal name says Undead, so expect the tooltip to change), and 5 pieces take 0.5 sec off Judgement. Before raid tier, the reworked Lightforge and Soulforge dungeon sets pay out at 2 through 6 pieces; they lean toward spell power but their damage-and-healing proc suits this build.
Consumables and professions
- Strength and crit: Juju Power and Elixir of the Mongoose.
- Spell power: Greater Arcane Elixir for Holy damage.
- Mana: Major Mana Potion and Mageblood Potion.
- Weapon: a sharpening stone or weightstone that suits your weapon type.
- Professions: Blacksmithing for weapons, or Engineering for utility on trash.
