The duo at a glance
Shaman & Warrior Duo for levels 30–60: an Arms Warrior who never stops swinging and a Restoration Shaman behind him.
The classic Horde answer to the Warrior’s hardest problem. A solo Warrior loses health on every pull and spends half the time eating; with a Restoration Shaman behind him, he pulls two or three mobs, gains Rage from the hits and never has to stop. The Shaman keeps him alive with Healing Wave, Riptide and totems, adds Strength of Earth or Windfury Totem for more damage, and casts Lightning Bolts when there is nothing to heal. From level 30 Arms has Sweeping Strikes, from 40 Mortal Strike, and the duo turns into a cleave machine that also runs dungeons with three more players.
| Role | Spec | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Healer | Restoration Shaman | Totems before each pull, keeps the Warrior alive with Healing Wave and Riptide, Lightning Bolts when idle |
| DPS | Arms Warrior | Charges two or three mobs, Sweeping Strikes and Mortal Strike, holds threat off the Shaman |
Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.
How the shaman & warrior duo plays
- Warrior pulls, Shaman places: the Shaman drops Strength of Earth (or Windfury Totem from level 32 in Classic) and Healing Stream Totem at the fight spot, then the Warrior Charges the pack.
- Two or three mobs at a time: Rend on everything, Sweeping Strikes, then Overpower, Mortal Strike and Cleave. The Warrior takes all the damage and turns it into Rage.
- Efficient heals only: the Shaman heals with Healing Wave ranks that fit the damage, keeps Riptide on the Warrior from level 45, and lets Healing Stream Totem cover the small hits.
- Damage while idle: when the Warrior is above 70% health, the Shaman uses Lightning Bolt or Earth Shock on a caster. Natural Grace keeps the extra threat low.
- Emergencies: Nature’s Swiftness into a big Healing Wave, Mana Tide Totem when a long chain empties the Shaman, and Reincarnation if everything else fails.
Your job as Restoration Shaman
Your Warrior does the killing; you decide how many mobs he can take. Keep him in the fight with the cheapest heal that works, let totems do as much as possible, and save Nature’s Swiftness for the moment a pull goes wrong. You also set the duo’s rest breaks: if you are below a third of your mana, say so before the next Charge. Natural Grace and Healing Focus are here because a Warrior pulling several mobs means healing threat and mobs that sometimes turn on you.
Pull by pull
- Strength of Earth or Windfury Totem, plus Healing Stream Totem, at the spot where the Warrior will fight; Mana Spring Totem on long chains.
- Water Shield on yourself before the Warrior Charges.
- Riptide on the Warrior as the pack lands (from level 45), then Healing Wave ranks that match the incoming damage.
- When he is above 70%, Lightning Bolt or Earth Shock the caster in the pack.
- Nature’s Swiftness plus Healing Wave for a sudden spike; Mana Tide Totem during long chains, not after them.
Mistakes that get the duo killed
- Casting the biggest Healing Wave rank on every hit: you run dry by the second pull.
- Standing in melee range of the pack, where heal threat turns mobs straight onto you.
- Placing totems after the Charge, when the pack has already moved away from them.
- Using Reincarnation while the Warrior is still alive and fighting; he usually saves the pull if you rez with mana.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Improved Healing Wave 5/5 — A faster Healing Wave, your main heal on the Warrior.
- Levels 15–17 · Natural Grace 3/3 — 15% less threat from your spells, so heals on a multi-mob pull do not pull mobs to you.
- Levels 18–19 · Improved Reincarnation 2/2 — More frequent Reincarnation, a little more health, and more health and mana when you use it.
- Levels 20–22 · Ancestral Healing 3/3 — Critical heals give the Warrior 25% more armor for 15 sec.
- Level 23 · Water Shield 1/1 — Mana back when you are hit or land a critical heal.
- Levels 24–26 · Mindfulness 3/3 — Half of your mana regeneration continues while casting.
- Levels 27–29 · Healing Focus 3/3 — Damage rarely interrupts your heals when a mob does turn on you.
- Levels 30–34 · Restorative Totems 5/5 — Healing Stream Totem heals 50% more and Mana Spring gives 25% more: steady healing and mana every pull.
- Level 35 · Mana Tide Totem 1/1 — A burst of mana for you and the Warrior’s party on long chains.
- Levels 36–38 · Healing Way 3/3 — 24% more healing from Healing Wave. Required for Riptide.
- Level 39 · Nature’s Swiftness 1/1 — Your next Nature spell is instant: the emergency heal that saves a bad pull.
- Levels 40–44 · Purification 5/5 — +10% healing from all your spells.
- Level 45 · Riptide 1/1 — A strong direct heal plus a heal over time, and Chain Heal works better on that target: your opener on every pull.
- Levels 46–50 · Totemic Focus 5/5 — Cheaper totems; you drop several before every pull.
- Levels 51–55 · Ancestral Knowledge (Enhancement) 5/5 — More Intellect for a larger mana pool.
- Levels 56–57 · Guardian Totems (Enhancement) 2/2 — Stronger Stoneskin Totem for hard-hitting elites and a shorter Grounding Totem cooldown against casters.
- Levels 58–60 · Tidal Focus 3/5 — Cheaper heals and more hit for Earth Shock interrupts and Lightning Bolts.
Where to level
Levels 30–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Thousand Needles. Razorfen Kraul (30–36), the Scarlet Monastery wings (Graveyard 31–37, Library 34–40, Armory 37–43) and The Drowned City (35–40) are all good group runs for this duo as healer plus melee. Levels 40–50: Dustwallow Marsh, Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands and the Badlands. Krol’dok Stronghold (40–55), Uldaman (44–50) and Zul’Farrak (45–51) cover the whole range. Levels 50–60: Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, Azshara, Burning Steppes, Winterspring and the Plaguelands, with Alcaz Prison (48–53), Maraudon (48–54), Sunken Temple (52–58) and Blackrock Depths (52–60). At 55+ Dire Maul East and Blackmaw Hold (both 55–60) are the last stops before the level 60 dungeons.
Where the duo struggles
- Casters at range do not come to the Warrior. Pull them around a corner or have the Shaman Earth Shock the cast.
- Large packs outheal the Shaman’s mana. Three mobs is the comfortable limit before Mana Tide Totem; skip the fourth.
- The Shaman is not a tank: if heal threat pulls a mob, the Warrior needs to Taunt in Defensive Stance or Intimidating Shout. Agree who handles it before the pull.
- Downtime lives on the Shaman’s mana bar. Drink when the Shaman drinks, and the Warrior bandages instead of asking for heals between pulls.
