First WoW Forever beta loot uncovered: a Barrens speed set, Rath'mael's shield and 14 hidden items

The WoW Forever beta client keeps its new loot secret. Most new item records are encrypted, and the keys to read them are not shipped with the client, so dataminers could see that thousands of items exist but not what they are. Blizzard said at BlizzCon it wants players to discover Forever rather than solve it from a spreadsheet, and this is how that works in practice.

The secret lasts until someone loots the item. As soon as an item drops on the beta servers, the server sends its data to the player, and the datamine picks it up. The first update after launch day, generated on September 18 from build 1.60.1.69913, shows 14 items revealed this way, plus a list of quests, creatures and objects that testers have seen in the world.

Blessing of Kalimdor: the first set with a zone bonus

The most interesting find is a set that was in the client before, but with every piece blanked out. Now all three pieces have names:

The 2-piece bonus was already known, since it lives in a separate spell record: movement speed increased by 5% in The Barrens and Stonetalon Mountains.

The bonus is small and only works in two zones, and that seems to be the point. Forever’s set bonuses already suggested that Blizzard wants low-level gear to feel fun, not just carry stats. A Barrens speed set for Horde players between levels 16 and 20 fits that well. The names point to Barrens wildlife (zhevra, raptors, a pack leader), but the datamine does not say where each piece drops.

Ruins of Lordaeron: Rath’mael’s shield

Mirror of Rath’mael is a rare shield (item level 24, requires level 19) with +4 Strength, +3 Intellect and +4 Stamina. Rath’mael is one of the seven bosses in Ruins of Lordaeron, one of the two new dungeons open in the first beta phase. The client also has a vendor-trash Rath’mael’s Copper Coin and Scepter of the Abandoned, a rare mace named after another of the dungeon’s bosses.

Two items stand out. Duty Bound Leggings and Remembrance Armor can be worn from level 1 but have item level 24. That pattern usually means quest rewards that scale with where you pick them up, not world drops. Operator’s Gloves at item level 32 with no level requirement is odd for a beta capped at 20. It may be a reward that is already in the game but meant for later content.

If you play a two-handed Warrior or Paladin, Corpse Chopper is worth chasing for the cap. At 18.4 DPS with +11 Strength from level 16, only the level 19 Coldspire Staff (20.5 DPS) hits harder among the known two-handers for these levels.

Smaller finds

• Bug Catching Net: “Catch an exotic bug, and keep it as a specimen.” This is a collecting hobby, the kind of discovery Blizzard said it wants Forever to be full of.
• Clouded Water Globe: an uncommon item for level 17 with no text yet.
• Unruptured Stalker Gland: a quest item.

25 Dun Morogh quests seen live

The datamine now logs quests that testers have actually seen. The first 25 all come from Dun Morogh, and several are new to Forever: A Visitor to Dun Morogh (investigating a campsite above Gol’Bolar Quarry), Frosthowl, Secure the Mountain, Dawn in the Mountains and Data Hoarders. That last one sends you to collect Gnomeregan archival data cards.

There is also a whole Camping 101 series (Cooking, Engineering, First Aid, Fishing and Mining) in Kharanos and at Iceflow Lake. Each one teaches you to craft a camping item for your profession. This is the first real look at how Forever’s camping system ties into professions from level 1.

What this means

Items will keep appearing this way for the whole beta. Each boss kill and quest turn-in can reveal something new, so the loot tables will fill in over the coming weeks, not all at once. We will add finds to our gear hub as they show up.
