WoW Forever beta class report: Paladin runs away with it, Warrior struggles, and the level 20 builds

Two days in, beta testers mostly agree on the extremes. Paladin is the class players call overtuned, and Warrior the one that feels furthest behind, with crits giving no bonus rage. Guide sites still rank Hunter as the easiest leveler. The complaints are specific: Enhancement's 30% Mental Quickness, a weak Lava Burst, weak Druid Wrath, Restless Blades gone from Combat, and a shorter Fear range for Warlocks. This roundup covers level 20 builds for every class.

The first beta phase caps at level 20, so players have a narrow window to test the new talent trees. Two days in, the official forums and the first guide sites agree on a few things and disagree on others. Here is where each class stands, with the builds people are actually running.

One caveat first. Blizzard has made no class balance statement since the beta opened, and every opinion below comes from players or guide writers. Two strong known bugs also affect balance at the moment: Bear Form armor stacking and full-damage Arcane Missiles.

New: level 20 build guides. Each class below has a full beta guide with a point-by-point talent order from level 10 to 20: Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage, Warlock and Druid.

The short version

Class Beta mood Most-used leveling spec
Paladin “Overtuned” Retribution
Hunter Strong, guide sites’ #1 Beast Mastery
Warlock Strong Affliction
Mage Strong on paper, little beta testing Frost
Priest Holy/Disc fun, Shadow unhappy Discipline (wand leveling)
Rogue Clunky, energy-starved Combat
Druid Feral fine, Wrath painful Feral
Shaman Mixed Enhancement
Warrior “Really bad state” Arms (or sword and board)

Paladin: the one everyone points at

If there is a consensus, it is this. “I tested Paladin and my goodness you can just level with your eyes closed,” one tester wrote in the leveling-speed thread. Paladin keeps coming up when players explain why the beta feels too easy.

The design is not settled, though. “Major Design Concerns for Paladin” has 191 replies. Its main target is the Retribution capstone Twist of Light, which the poster argues is not really seal twisting and turns seals into maintenance buffs. If you want to play Paladin at level 20, follow our level 20 Retribution Paladin guide. Expect tuning.

Warrior: “lags significantly behind”

The mirror image. “Warrior is in a really bad state” (52 replies) says the class “lags significantly behind in its design” compared with Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Warlock and Druid, and still runs on too many old talents. A second thread finds a concrete cause. Critical hits give no extra rage, so a crit for 40% of a mob’s health still gives about 12 rage, and the poster calls two-handed rage generation “absolutely terrible.” The same poster found sword and board with Protection’s block talents more comfortable for now.

If the rage issue is a bug, it is the kind that gets fixed quickly, and Warrior’s standing could change overnight. Until then, expect a slower start. Our level 20 Warrior guide is built around the Rage problem, using Unbridled Wrath to generate Rage on every hit.

Hunter: the guide sites’ pick

Guide sites still rank Hunter the easiest leveler, and Icy Veins calls Beast Mastery “top-tier leveling”. Pets now scale with your stats, and Summon Hawk arrives at level 25. Its level 20 build starts with Deadly Aspects, which makes Aspect of the Hawk your strongest combat buff, then adds Pathfinding. The last points go to Improved Revive Pet, Focused Fire or Lethal Attacks. Our level 20 Beast Mastery guide takes that path.

Rogue: Combat lost its favorite talent

Combat players are the unhappiest. Restless Blades is gone from the Combat tree. One poster asked, “Why would I ever pick up Flawless Execution if my main focus is to keep slice and dice up?” Other threads describe Rogues as energy-starved at low levels. Icy Veins’ Combat build for 20 takes Improved Sinister Strike, Improved Eviscerate, Precision and Puncturing Wounds, and skips dodge and parry talents. See our level 20 Combat Rogue guide.

Priest: a split class

Holy and Discipline players are having fun thanks to the Smite and Holy Fire changes. Icy Veins’ leveling build is built around wanding: Wand Specialization first, then Spirit Tap from Shadow for less downtime, with Twilight Focus or Improved Power Word: Shield as options.

Shadow is another story. “Shadow priest is horrible” lists the losses: Shadow Weaving now only buffs the priest, no Misery, no spell crit debuff, and Power Infusion is Discipline-only. The poster adds that the damage is fine but Warlocks overshadow them. Until Shadow is sorted out, our level 20 Priest guide levels with a wand.

Shaman: Enhancement wants a better deal

The biggest class-specific thread of the day, with 39 replies, is about Enhancement’s Mental Quickness, which converts only 30% of Intellect into spell power at full stacks. Players compare it with Retribution’s 100% conversion. Elemental has its own complaint. At max rank, Lava Burst has the same cast time as Lightning Bolt, does only 36 more damage, costs more mana and has a 10-second cooldown.

Icy Veins’ Enhancement build for 20 goes Shamanistic Focus first, then Thundering Strikes for early crit and Improved Ghost Wolf. Ghost Wolf now works indoors. See our level 20 Enhancement Shaman guide.

Druid: level Feral, avoid Wrath

Feral is the expected leveling spec, and nobody is arguing. The complaint is about Balance’s opener. “Druid Wrath needs a serious Revert” says the damage is “pitiful” while leveling. Players think it was lowered to offset the extra spell damage available elsewhere, and want the first ranks raised. Our level 20 Feral Druid guide levels in Cat Form instead.

Warlock and Mage: quietly strong

Few complaints usually means a class is doing fine. Players expect Warlock to be “really good”, and the one concrete problem is a likely oversight. Destructive Reach replaced Grim Reach, so Fear range dropped from 24 to 20 yards. Guide sites rank Warlock and Mage second and third for leveling, but we found no beta-tested Mage build yet. See our level 20 Affliction Warlock and Frost Mage guides.

Guide sites vs. players

The main disagreement is at the top. Guide sites rank Hunter first, then Warlock and Mage. Beta players point at Paladin. Both can be right: Hunter is the safest leveler, and Paladin is the one that currently hits too hard. Either way, the level 20 cap is where tuning is easiest to change, and the move to level 30 in two weeks is the natural point for a balance pass.

Our tier list and class pages are based on the talent data. We will update them as Blizzard responds.
