Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.

The duo at a glance

Paladin & Mage Duo for levels 30–60: a Protection Paladin who gathers packs into Consecration and a Frost Mage who kills them with Blizzard.

This is spell cleave shrunk to two players. The Paladin runs through several mobs, stops on one spot and holds them with Consecration, Holy Shield and Judgement taunts; the Mage slows the whole pack with Improved Blizzard and finishes it with Cone of Cold. A normal Frost Mage has to kite every AoE pull and loses it when one mob breaks loose; with a Paladin holding the pack, the Mage just stands and channels. The duo starts at 30 because this is when both halves are online: the Paladin has Templar’s Bulwark and Swift Judgement, and the Mage has Improved Blizzard, Arctic Reach and Improved Cone of Cold. Before 30, level together normally. Paladins are Alliance-only, so this is an Alliance duo.

Role Spec Job
Tank Protection Paladin Gathers camps, holds them with Consecration and Holy Shield, taunts breakers back with Judgement
DPS Frost Mage Improved Blizzard on the Paladin, Frost Nova on breakers, Cone of Cold to finish, food and water

Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.

How the paladin & mage duo plays

  1. Gather, then stop. The Paladin tags three to six mobs of the same camp and stops next to a wall, tree or rock so they stack on one side instead of circling.
  2. Consecration first, Blizzard second. Consecration and one Judgement go out, then the Mage starts Blizzard centred on the Paladin. Frost Channeling cuts Frost threat by 30%, but a Blizzard before any Consecration tick still pulls mobs off the tank.
  3. The Mage handles escapes. A mob that breaks towards the Mage gets Frost Nova; the Paladin taunts it back with Judgement and Swift Judgement.
  4. Finish with Cone of Cold. When the pack is below a quarter of its health, the Mage steps in and Cone of Cold ends it instead of a second full Blizzard.
  5. Drink together. Mage water covers both of you. A Paladin who gets mana back from blocks still needs a drink after two or three big pulls.

Your job as Frost Mage

You are all the damage. Your Blizzard only works while the Paladin holds the pack, so threat and patience matter more than speed: wait for Consecration, then channel. Frost Channeling and Arcane Subtlety cut the threat of your Frost and Arcane spells by 30%, and Ice Barrier at 40 stops a stray hit from interrupting your channel. After 40 the build goes into Arcane for mana: Arcane Concentration gives free spells, Arcane Meditation keeps some regeneration running while you cast, and Arcane Impact makes Arcane Explosion a better finisher when the Paladin drags the pack onto you. Conjure water for both of you before every session.

Pull by pull

  • Ice Armor and Arcane Intellect on both of you, water in the Paladin’s bags.
  • Wait for the Paladin to stop and for one Consecration tick, then Blizzard centred on the Paladin.
  • If a mob breaks towards you: Frost Nova it and step back while the Paladin taunts it; do not start a second Blizzard on top of yourself.
  • When the pack is low, walk into range and Cone of Cold; Arcane Explosion finishes whatever is left.
  • Say your mana out loud at 30%. The next pull waits for you.

Mistakes that get the duo killed

  • Blizzard before Consecration: the chill hits every mob and the whole pack turns on the Mage.
  • Frost Nova on a pack that is still walking in: mobs freeze wherever they are, outside Blizzard, and the Paladin cannot drag them into place.
  • Standing inside melee range of the pack to reach Blizzard. Arctic Reach gives you the range instead.
  • Using Ice Block with the pack still on you and no Paladin taunt ready: when it ends, nothing has changed.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–14 · Improved Frostbolt 5/5 — Faster Frostbolts for the levels before Blizzard and for single elites later.
  • Levels 15–17 · Permafrost 3/3 — Chills last 3 sec longer and slow 10% more: a pack in Blizzard barely moves.
  • Levels 18–19 · Improved Frost Nova 2/2 — 4 sec shorter Frost Nova cooldown, so one is ready for the next breaker.
  • Levels 20–22 · Improved Blizzard 3/3 — Blizzard slows everything inside it by 65%. This is the talent the whole duo is built on.
  • Levels 23–25 · Frost Channeling 3/3 — 15% cheaper Frost spells and 30% less Frost threat: both limits of a big pull.
  • Levels 26–27 · Arctic Reach 2/2 — 20% more Blizzard and Frostbolt range and a wider Frost Nova and Cone of Cold: stand back and still cover the pile.
  • Level 28 · Ice Block 1/1 — Survive the pull where the Paladin loses the pack, while they taunt it back.
  • Level 29 · Piercing Ice 1/3 — +6% Frost damage on every Blizzard tick.
  • Levels 30–32 · Improved Cone of Cold 3/3 — +35% Cone of Cold damage to finish a whole low pack in one cast.
  • Level 33 · Cold Snap 1/1 — Resets your Frost cooldowns: a second Frost Nova or Ice Block when a pull goes bad. Required for Ice Barrier.
  • Levels 34–35 · Piercing Ice 3/3 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 36–38 · Elemental Precision 3/5 — +Hit for Frost and Fire spells so chills stick to higher-level mobs.
  • Level 39 · Ice Shards 1/5 — More critical strike damage on your Frost spells. One point now to reach Ice Barrier.
  • Level 40 · Ice Barrier 1/1 — An instant shield; while it holds, damage cannot interrupt or delay your casts. Blizzard keeps channeling when a mob slips through.
  • Levels 41–45 · Arcane Focus (Arcane) 5/5 — +Hit with Arcane spells, so Arcane Explosion and Counterspell land on higher-level mobs.
  • Levels 46–50 · Arcane Concentration (Arcane) 5/5 — A 10% chance after any damage spell hits to make your next damage spell free. Blizzard and Arcane Explosion hit many targets, so it procs often.
  • Levels 51–52 · Arcane Subtlety (Arcane) 2/2 — Lower spell resistances on your target and 30% less Arcane threat, so Arcane Explosion does not pull the pack off the Paladin.
  • Levels 53–55 · Arcane Impact (Arcane) 3/3 — +6% Arcane Explosion crit chance for the finishing phase of each pull.
  • Levels 56–58 · Arcane Meditation (Arcane) 3/3 — 15% of your mana regeneration continues while casting: fewer drinks per hour.
  • Levels 59–60 · Arcane Resilience (Arcane) 2/2 — Armor equal to half your Intellect, for the moment a mob reaches you.

Where to level

30–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Dustwallow Marsh have camps that stand close enough to gather. Scarlet Monastery Graveyard (31–37) and Library (34–40) work as duo AoE runs at the top of their range. 40–50: Tanaris, Feralas and the Hinterlands. Zul’Farrak (45–51) is the classic Paladin and Mage dungeon: the pyramid stair event sends waves of trolls up the steps. In Krol’dok Stronghold (40–55), pull one pack first to check that chills and Frost Nova hold. 50–60: Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, Winterspring and Eastern Plaguelands, with Blackrock Depths (52–60) and Blackmaw Hold (55–60) in a full group.

Where the duo struggles

  • Ranged casters do not stack on the Paladin. Break line of sight so they walk in, or kill them one at a time before gathering the rest.
  • Immune or root-breaking mobs (elementals and anything that ignores slows) make Blizzard kiting fail. Tank them in melee and use Frostbolt.
  • Single elites and bosses turn the duo into a slow single-target pair. Frostbolt from range while the Paladin keeps the boss turned away.
  • Overpulls when both are low on mana are how this duo dies. Skip a camp rather than start it at half mana.
