Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.

Overview

Levels 10–60 · Shadow Priest, solo questing and grinding.

Shadow is the most consistent way to level a Priest alone, and every Classic guide builds it around the same loop: shield, damage over time, a few big spells, then wand the mob down while your mana comes back. On the Forever trees Wand Specialization is a 2-point talent in Discipline worth 26% wand damage, and Spirit Tap is the first stop in Shadow: at 5/5 every kill doubles your Spirit and lets half your regeneration continue while casting. Mind Flay and Improved Mind Flay give you a slowing channel, Vampiric Embrace heals you from your Shadow damage, and Shadowform cuts Shadow spell costs in half and your physical damage taken by 15%. Because the wand talent costs two points, Shadowform lands at level 42 instead of 40.

Why this build

  • Almost no downtime: Spirit Tap after every kill plus wanding means you rarely sit to drink.
  • Self-healing while fighting: Vampiric Embrace turns 20% of your Shadow damage into healing.
  • Kiting tools: Mind Flay slows, Psychic Scream fears, and Blackout can stun a mob that reaches you.
  • Tanky for a cloth class: Power Word: Shield plus Shadowform’s 15% physical damage reduction.

Weak spots

  • Slow until the 20s: before Mind Flay your kill speed depends on your wand.
  • No healing in Shadowform: leaving the form to heal costs mana and a global cooldown.
  • Weak against mobs that resist Shadow: swap to Smite and the wand on those.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10 to 60. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–11 · Wand Specialization (Discipline) 2/2 — +26% wand damage in only 2 points.
  • Levels 12–16 · Spirit Tap 5/5 — Kills double your Spirit for 15 sec and let half your regeneration continue while casting.
  • Levels 17–18 · Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2/2 — +6 sec Shadow Word: Pain duration: more damage for the same mana.
  • Levels 19–21 · Shadow Focus 3/5 — +1% hit per point for Shadow spells; resisted spells are wasted mana.
  • Level 22 · Mind Flay 1/1 — Channel that deals Shadow damage over 3 sec and slows the target.
  • Levels 23–24 · Improved Mind Flay 2/2 — +20% Mind Flay damage and 10 yards more range, with a weaker 20% slow.
  • Levels 25–26 · Improved Mind Blast 2/5 — Shorter Mind Blast cooldown, 2.5 sec at 5/5.
  • Level 27 · Vampiric Embrace 1/1 — You and your party heal for 20% of your Shadow damage for 30 sec.
  • Levels 28–30 · Shadow Weaving 3/3 — Each Shadow spell adds 2% Shadow damage for 15 sec, up to 5 stacks.
  • Level 31 · Improved Mind Blast 3/5 — finish the talent.
  • Level 32 · Silence 1/1 — 5 sec Silence to stop a heal or a caster that keeps its distance.
  • Levels 33–34 · Improved Mind Blast 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 35–36 · Shadow Reach 2/2 — +20% range on offensive Shadow spells: open from further away.
  • Levels 37–41 · Darkness 5/5 — +10% Shadow damage.
  • Level 42 · Shadowform 1/1 — +10% Shadow damage, Shadow spells cost 50% less mana, 15% less physical damage taken; no healing spells in form.
  • Levels 43–44 · Shadow Focus 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 45–49 · Blackout 5/5 — 10% chance for Shadow damage spells to stun the target for 3 sec.
  • Levels 50–51 · Improved Psychic Scream 2/2 — Psychic Scream cooldown 4 sec shorter, for more escapes from adds.
  • Levels 52–54 · Twin Disciplines (Discipline) 3/5 — +5% damage and healing on instant spells such as Shadow Word: Pain and Power Word: Shield.
  • Levels 55–57 · Improved Power Word: Shield (Discipline) 3/3 — +21% Power Word: Shield absorption.
  • Levels 58–59 · Twin Disciplines (Discipline) 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Level 60 · Mental Agility (Discipline) 1/3 — Instant spells cost less mana.

Key levels

  • Level 11 · Wand Specialization 2/2: +26% wand damage for your main mana-free attack.
  • Level 16 · Spirit Tap 5/5: every kill gives 15 sec of doubled Spirit and regeneration while casting.
  • Level 22 · Mind Flay: a slowing channel that often finishes a mob before it reaches you.
  • Level 27 · Vampiric Embrace: cast it first on long fights to heal while you damage.
  • Level 32 · Silence: shut down healers and casters who would otherwise flee or heal.
  • Level 42 · Shadowform: half-cost Shadow spells and 15% less physical damage taken.
  • Level 49 · Blackout 5/5: a 10% chance for Shadow spells to stun the target for 3 sec.

How to pull and kill

  1. Power Word: Shield yourself before pulling so the shield absorbs the first hits and prevents spell pushback.
  2. Open with Mind Blast from maximum range, then Shadow Word: Pain while the mob runs in (add Vampiric Embrace on elites).
  3. Mind Flay once or twice as it closes; the slow buys you another cast.
  4. Switch to your wand when Shadow Word: Pain is ticking and the mob is below about half health.
  5. If a second mob joins, Psychic Scream (level 14 in Classic), dot the add, and let Shadow Word: Pain and your wand finish both.

Leveling tips

  • Wands: upgrade the wand every few levels; it is most of your damage until the 30s. Enchanters can make good cheap ones.
  • Spirit gear: Spirit is worth more than Intellect while leveling with Spirit Tap. Look for ‘of the Owl’ and ‘of the Whale’ items.
  • Drink less, pull sooner: start the next pull while Spirit Tap is active instead of drinking to full.
  • Inner Fire (level 12 in Classic) adds armor; keep it up while questing.
  • Zones: Elwynn, Westfall or Tirisfal Glades early, Duskwood or the Barrens in the 20s, Stranglethorn Vale and Desolace in the 30s, Tanaris and the Hinterlands in the 40s, Western and Eastern Plaguelands in the 50s.
  • Dungeons: Shadow can heal normal dungeons out of form, for example Shadowfang Keep (23–29) or Razorfen Downs (38–44).

After level 60

At 60 move the Improved Psychic Scream points into Shadow Focus or Shadow Affinity for dungeons and raids, and consider Improved Fade if you often pull threat.
