Overview

Level 60 · Shadow Priest in battlegrounds and world PvP.

Shadow in PvP is damage over time plus control. Blackout can stun targets when your Shadow spells hit, Improved Psychic Scream gives a shorter fear cooldown, Silence locks casters and healers, and Shadowform lowers physical damage taken while boosting your spells. From Discipline, Silent Resolve shortens stuns, fears and silences on you and Martyrdom protects casting after crits. This build leaves out Improved Mind Flay, because its smaller slow is worse in PvP than the base Mind Flay.

Your role in a fight

In battlegrounds you apply pressure to many players at once with Shadow Word: Pain and Devouring Plague, and you stop healers with Silence. In world PvP you win most fights against lone melee by using Psychic Scream and Mind Flay to keep them away while your damage over time works.

Darkspear Islands

Darkspear Islands is described by Blizzard as a 15 vs 15 battleground mixing control points with Arathi Basin style flag captures and defense. For Shadow, a clustered defense at a point suits area fear and damage over time, and a flag carrier is a good Mind Flay and Silence target. No other details about the map are confirmed.

Honor and ranks: WoW Forever is reported to bring a 14-rank Honor track, earned from battlegrounds and PvP content. Thresholds, weekly caps and decay are not announced; see the PvP and honor hub for what is confirmed.

Strengths

  • Pressure on many targets. Damage over time spells spread across a whole group while you keep moving.
  • Layered control. Blackout stuns, Improved Psychic Scream and Silence give you three separate ways to stop an attacker.
  • Tough for a caster. Shadowform reduces physical damage and Silent Resolve shortens the control used on you.
  • Healer shutdown. Silence and Mana Burn both target the player keeping your kill alive.

Weak points

  • Dispels: Paladins, Priests and Shamans can remove Shadow Word: Pain and other effects.
  • Burst from stealth: Rogues who open with a full stun chain can kill you before Psychic Scream is usable.
  • Interrupts: Kick or Counterspell on Shadow locks your whole damage school.
  • Healing: Shadowform blocks Holy spells, so healing yourself costs time.

Level 60 PvP talent build

Discipline 18 / Holy 0 / Shadow 33, all 51 points. The talent tree above shows the finished build.

Shadow (33)

  • Shadow Focus 3/5 — hit for Shadow spells, since a resisted Silence or fear can lose the fight.
  • Blackout 5/5 — your Shadow damage spells can stun, which interrupts melee pressure and casts alike.
  • Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2/2 — longer Shadow Word: Pain on everyone you touch.
  • Shadow Reach 2/2 — longer range on offensive Shadow spells to stay out of melee.
  • Improved Mind Blast 3/5 — Mind Blast more often for burst.
  • Improved Psychic Scream 2/2 — fear more often against melee.
  • Mind Flay 1/1 — a strong slow and your main kiting spell.
  • Improved Fade 1/2 — Fade more often against pets.
  • Vampiric Embrace 1/1 — self-healing from damage and the requirement for Shadowform.
  • Shadow Weaving 3/3 — a stacking Shadow damage bonus on your target.
  • Silence 1/1 — an interrupt and silence for healers and casters.
  • Devouring Contagion 1/2 — one point for a cheaper Devouring Plague that can jump when a player dies in a crowd.
  • Early Demise 2/2 — Shadow Word: Death crits to finish low targets.
  • Darkness 5/5 — more Shadow damage.
  • Shadowform 1/1 — less physical damage taken and harder hitting spells.

Discipline (18)

  • Twin Disciplines 5/5 — more damage from instants, which is most of what you cast while moving.
  • Silent Resolve 3/3 — shorter stuns, fears and silences on you.
  • Martyrdom 2/2 — melee crits no longer push back your spells.
  • Mental Agility 3/3 — cheaper instants in long fights.
  • Inner Focus 1/1 — a free Mind Blast with extra crit.
  • Meditation 1/3 — one point on the path.
  • Mental Strength 3/5 — more Intellect for a bigger mana pool.

Key abilities

  • Shadow Word: Pain + Devouring Plague: apply both on the move to every enemy you can reach.
  • Mind Blast → Mind Flay: burst and slow a target at the same time.
  • Silence: stop a heal or a big spell.
  • Psychic Scream: break melee off you and nearby healers.
  • Power Word: Shield: you still have it; shield before the Rogue opener if you expect one.
  • Mana Burn: drain enemy healers when your team pushes.

Matchups

  • Warriors · Psychic Scream and Mind Flay keep them away; Shadowform reduces the damage that gets through.
  • Rogues · shield yourself, fear after the stun and dot them so Stealth does not return.
  • Mages · Silence their big casts and watch for Counterspell on your Shadow school.
  • Warlocks · long damage-over-time fight; dispel their effects and use Silence on Fear casts.
  • Paladins and Druids · Mana Burn and Silence limit their healing.
  • Priests · whoever lands Silence first wins; Silent Resolve helps you.

Resources and cooldowns

Shadowform lowers the mana cost of Shadow spells, so mana lasts longer than in Classic. Track Psychic Scream, Silence and Inner Focus. Shadowform prevents casting Holy spells like Flash Heal, so shift out only when you need to heal yourself.

Gear

  • PvP sets: The Forever data lists four Priest PvP sets named Investiture (Champion’s, Lieutenant Commander’s, Field Marshal’s and Warlord’s). All of them carry the same three bonuses in different orders: +20 Stamina, 1 sec longer Psychic Scream, and up to 44 healing and 15 spell damage. The Stamina and spell damage bonuses both matter for Shadow.
  • Stats: Stamina first, then spell damage, spell hit and Intellect.

Consumables and engineering

  • Consumables: Free Action Potion, mana potions and Healthstones.
  • Professions: Engineering for grenades and trinkets, Tailoring or Enchanting next to it.
