Experience changes that affect this route

The beta changed the leveling maths twice in October, so advice written in September no longer holds. Each entry is what Blizzard wrote, with our reading of it marked separately. Last change .

  1. The target is parity with questing, not Classic Era dungeon speedAnnounced, not in a build yet

Blizzard's stated aim: after these changes, perfect experience-per-hour dungeon play should land very close to, if not equal to, optimal questing. It also said dungeon experience will not return to Classic Era levels, because dungeon spam being the optimal path fails its design pillars.

What it means for your route: Plan a mixed route. Dungeons are for the levels where an instance sits on your path and the group is close to your level; questing carries the levels in between. A pure dungeon run to 60 is being balanced out of the game on purpose.

Legacy Points while you level

Unconfirmed

Where to spend Priest Legacy Points for solo questing, in the order the points arrive. A character can spend 16, and an account can earn 65 at launch. Stop wherever your total is — the list is cumulative. Effects are quoted from the Beta client 1.60.1 data.

  1. 1.

    Well Restedrank 1 · Adventure

Your rested experience accumulates 4% faster and your rested experience cap is increased by 4%.

Only one point here for now — it is the prerequisite for Talented, and rested experience is worth having while you are at it.

  2. 2.

    Talentedrank 5 · Adventure

You gain talent points every level starting at level 5 instead of starting at level 10, but you still may not have more than 51 total talent points.

The strongest leveling node in the tree: talent points from level 5 instead of 10, so you reach your first real build five levels sooner.

  3. 3.

Thrill of Adventurerank 5 · Adventure

You gain 5% of your maximum Health and Mana over 10 sec each time you deliver the killing blow to a non-trivial enemy. Ineffective in dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds.

5% of your health and mana back on every killing blow. Solo questing is mostly downtime between fights, and this is the node that removes it. It does nothing in dungeons, raids or battlegrounds.

What to skip, and why

  • Permanence: Its party-buff half does nothing alone; the camp rest half is not worth three points while you are questing.
  • For Great Honor: Honor only, so it waits until you start battlegrounds.
  • Diplomat: Reputation matters at 60, not on the way there.
  • High Alert, Field Medicine: Stealth detection and bandage timers are situational; neither changes how fast you level.

Variants

  • If you gather while you level, one or two points in Bountiful Harvest (20% more scarce materials per rank, Mining, Herbalism and Skinning) pay for your mounts; take them out of the last picks on this list.
  • Levelling in dungeons instead? Thrill of Adventure is dead weight there — the dungeon plan on any dungeon leveling guide spends those five points on Permanence, Reinforce and faster corpse runs.

Legacy values are datamined from the beta client and can change. Plan your own spread in the Legacy planner, see where points come from inLegacy Points, or read the Legacy system guide. The order above is our recommendation; the effects are game data.

Overview

  • Level 60 (leveling build, not raid-ready) · Shadow Priest · Undead · self-sufficient solo leveling, functional in leveling dungeons.
  • Quick heads up before anything else: none of this is tested past what’s actually playable in the current beta, which caps around level 20-30. Everything about the back half of this build — Shadowform’s timing, how mana feels once it’s up — is pulled from datamined talent text and tooltip math, not lived experience. Good plan, not a proven one.
  • 37 points in Shadow, 14 in Discipline, built around leveling solo without a healer holding your hand. Spirit Tap covers your mana early, Devouring Plague heals you back once it’s online, and once Shadowform’s up (theoretically level 42) your spell costs get cut in half.

Your Job In a Group

  • Ranged DPS with a DoT-and-filler rotation, plus a few things worth knowing you bring beyond damage. Psychic Scream is your panic button if a pull goes sideways. Vampiric Embrace turns your Shadow damage into party healing for 30 sec — won’t replace a healer but takes pressure off one. Silence is in this build, so you do have an interrupt for caster mobs.
  • Threat is worth watching since Shadow Affinity isn’t in this version — the points went to things that actually do damage. At leveling dungeon pace it shouldn’t matter much, but Shadowform crits can spike early in a pull before the tank’s built aggro, so don’t get greedy opening.

Why Play It

  • Self-sufficient while soloing.
  • Spirit Tap covers mana early, Devouring Plague heals you back once you’ve got it — you shouldn’t need to camp a healer to make progress.
  • Wand Spec smooths the dead levels.
    • 10-21 is the thin stretch before Mind Flay, and a 25% wand boost is most of your damage during it.
  • Mana stops being the wall once Shadowform’s up.
    • Half-price Shadow spells (theoretical, not confirmed) should mean way less sitting around drinking in the 40s and 50s.
  • Some group value.** Vampiric Embrace heal, Psychic Scream panic button, Silence interrupt — you’re not dead weight in a dungeon group.

Weak Points

  • 10-21 is thin.
    • No filler spell until Mind Flay lands. Wand-heavy, single-pull, expect to drink.
  • Devouring Plague is your worst spell per mana.
    • 0.66 damage-per-mana at rank 2, 0.86 at max — roughly half what Mind Flay gives you. It’s a sustain button, not a damage button. You cast it for the self-heal and accept the efficiency loss.
  • Shadow Word: Death backlash.
    • Whiff the kill and you eat 10% of your max health — don’t open with it on anything at full health.
  • All of this is guesswork past ~level 30.
    • Biggest caveat on the whole thing. None of the back half has been played by anyone yet.

Talent Point Breakdown

  • Shadow (37)
    • Spirit Tap 5/5 — mana sustain after kills, does most of its work in the 10-21 stretch.
    • Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2/2 — 18s to 24s is two extra ticks at full tick damage, so it’s +33% damage from SW:Pain for zero extra mana. Best efficiency pickup in the early tree.
    • Shadow Reach 2/2 — +20% range, safer pulls and better kiting.
    • Shadow Focus 5/5 — +5% hit. Weakest per-point pick in the build (~0.8% total damage per point), but it costs no mana and a missed SW:Pain is a full cast wasted. Used as gate filler between tiers.
    • Mind Flay 1/1 — the filler. Online at 22.
    • Improved Mind Flay 2/2 — +20% damage on your highest-uptime spell. Best damage-per-point in the tree at ~3.9%.
    • Shadow Weaving 3/3 — stacking Shadow damage, ~3.3% per point once it’s rolling. Ramps, so worth less on short kills.
    • Vampiric Embrace 1/1 — group healing off your damage.
    • Silence 1/1 — interrupt for caster mobs.
    • Devouring Contagion 2/2 — halves Devouring Plague’s mana cost, which matters given it’s your least efficient spell. Also spreads on kill for trash packs.
    • Improved Mind Blast 5/5 — **taken late on purpose.**
      • Each extra Mind Blast replaces 1.5 sec of Mind Flay channel: +107 damage for +115 mana, a marginal 0.93 damage-per-mana against Mind Flay’s 1.46 baseline. Before Shadowform that trade makes your mana worse. After, it’s fine.
    • Early Demise 2/2 — SW:Death crit on low-health targets.
    • Darkness 5/5 — flat +10% Shadow, 2% per point.
    • Shadowform 1/1 — capstone. Damage up, spell costs halved, bigger crits, less physical damage taken.
  • Discipline (14)
    • Wand Specialization 2/2 — first two points, levels 10-11.
    • Twin Disciplines 5/5 — honestly the weakest block in the build at ~0.65% damage per point. It’s here because you need 10 Discipline points to reach tier 3 and there’s nothing better in tier 1.
    • Improved Power Word: Shield 3/3 — 20% more absorb. Replaces Silent Resolve, whose threat reduction is Holy-school only and does nothing for a Shadow spec.
    • Meditation 3/3 — 50% regen while casting. Worth taking even with Shadowform because they solve different halves of the problem: Shadowform cuts what you spend, Meditation adds what you earn.
    • Inner Focus 1/1 — free crit-boosted cast, last point at 60.

Rotation and Priority

  • 10-21
    • no filler yet. Shadow Word: Pain up, Mind Blast on cooldown, wand everything else. Single-pull, expect downtime.
  • 20-21
    • Devouring Plague joins at 20, healing you back as it ticks. Cast it on cooldown even when you’re not hurting.
  • 22-41
    • Full rotation. SW:Pain maintained, Devouring Plague recast when it’s up, Mind Blast weaved in on cooldown, Mind Flay filling every gap. Wand only if you’re out of mana.
  • 32+
    • Shadow Word: Death for execute range (sub-20% hp). Weave ahead of Mind Flay when the target qualifies. Don’t open with it.
  • 42-60
    • Shadowform up basically permanently. Same priority, but half-price spells means way less wanding, way more Mind Flay. Steady state: SW:Pain uptime → Devouring Plague on CD → Mind Blast on CD → SW:Death on execute targets → Mind Flay to fill → wand only if OOM.

Resources

  • Mana’s rough 10-21, tolerable once Spirit Tap and Devouring Plague are both working, and theoretically mostly a non-issue from 42 on. Inner Focus gives you a free crit-boosted cast for burst or emergencies. Fade is your threat drop if you pull aggro. Worth knowing the actual efficiency numbers, since they drive the rotation: Mind Flay is your most mana-efficient damage at every level (1.46 damage-per-mana at rank 2, 1.90 at max), Mind Blast sits around 1.05-1.40, and Devouring Plague is the worst at 0.66-0.86 even after Devouring Contagion halves it. Shadow Word: Death is surprisingly efficient at low levels (1.73 at rank 1) which is part of why it’s worth weaving on execute targets. Shadow Word: Death isn’t a Classic spell, so double-check its cost and cooldown in-game rather than assuming Classic numbers apply.

Stat Priority

  • Spell hit — matters even against same-level mobs, more against anything a few levels up.
  • Shadow damage / spell damage — scales every tick of your DoTs and Mind Flay.
  • Intellect — mana pool, matters more before Shadowform than after.
  • Spell crit — secondary at leveling gear levels; matters more once Shadowform’s doubling the crit bonus.
  • Stamina — enough not to get one-shot, nothing more. Not chasing anything min-maxed here — leveling gear turns over too fast to optimize hard, just lean toward these when you have a choice.

Gear and Set Bonuses

  • No leveling-relevant tier sets — those are raid drops, way past where this build is aimed. Take upgrades as you find them, prioritizing the stats above. Undead racials (Touch of Weakness, Dark Sacrifice) need no gear at all.

Consumables and Professions

  • Alchemy and Herbalism, so you’re self-sufficient on potions — lean on healing and mana pots while leveling, especially 10-21 before the sustain talents come together. Wands and staves both work fine early since most of your damage before 22 is wand-based anyway.

Sources

  • Leveling route, pulling advice, and general shape adapted from how Undead/Shadow leveling plays out in Classic-style content. Talent tiers, spell levels, tooltip text and all the damage-per-mana math pulled from the Forever beta client via two independent datamine sites (builds 1.60.1.69893 and 1.60.1.69876), cross-checked against each other — they matched on everything used in this build. Efficiency numbers are base tooltip values only. No spell power coefficients, no crit, no gear scaling, and Shadow Weaving’s ramp is assumed to reach full stacks (on short leveling kills it often won’t, so it’s slightly overrated here). The relative ordering should hold; exact percentages will shift with gear. Beta’s only playable to ~20 right now, 30 by the time beta ends, so treat everything past that as informed guesswork.

Edit: yeah, AI helped put this together. It’s built off actual datamined numbers and cross-checked sources, not vibes — take it as a starting point and adjust once you’re actually playing it.
