The duo at a glance
Warlock & Priest Duo for levels 15–40: an Affliction Warlock and a Shadow Priest stacking damage over time.
Two DoT casters kill mobs without ever standing still for long: every mob gets Corruption, Bane of Agony and Shadow Word: Pain, the Voidwalker holds them, and the two casters channel Drain Life and Mind Flay while the damage ticks. The Priest is the safety valve. Power Word: Shield and Renew stop the rare burst, Vampiric Embrace heals the whole party from Shadow damage, and Spirit Tap plus the Warlock’s drains keep both mana bars high enough to chain pull. At level 40 the Priest reaches Shadowform and the Warlock reaches Drain Hope, and the duo finishes this stretch at its strongest.
| Role | Spec | Job |
|---|---|---|
| DPS | Affliction Warlock | Voidwalker tanks, DoTs on every mob, drains for health and mana, Fear on the extra mob |
| DPS | Shadow Priest | Shadow Word: Pain and Mind Flay, shields and Renew on whoever is hit, Vampiric Embrace for group healing |
Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.
How the warlock & priest duo plays
- The Voidwalker is the tank: the Warlock sends it in first and Torments. Both casters open with instant spells only after it has hit the mob twice.
- Split the DoTs: the Warlock puts Corruption and Bane of Agony on every mob in the pull, the Priest adds Shadow Word: Pain to the same mobs and Mind Blasts the one the Voidwalker is tanking.
- Channel, don’t cast: the Warlock channels Drain Life or Drain Soul on the lowest mob, the Priest channels Mind Flay on the tanked mob. Channels keep the duo’s health and mana up while the DoTs finish the work.
- Shields on the one being hit: Power Word: Shield on the Voidwalker or on whichever caster pulled aggro, then Renew. In Shadowform the Priest cannot heal, so drop the form only when a real heal is needed.
- Spirit Tap chain: the Warlock finishes mobs with Drain Soul, the Priest lands a kill with Mind Blast when possible, and both start the next pull while the kill buffs are running.
Your job as Shadow Priest
You are half damage dealer and half insurance. Most pulls you add Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Blast and Mind Flay to the Warlock’s DoTs. When something goes wrong you are the only healer: Power Word: Shield on the Voidwalker or the player being hit, Renew, and Psychic Scream if a pack breaks loose. Vampiric Embrace turns your Shadow damage into healing for the whole party, which covers most of the damage the Warlock takes from Life Tap. Shadow Affinity keeps your threat below the Voidwalker’s.
Pull by pull
- Power Word: Shield on the Voidwalker as it goes in, then wait for Torment before your first spell.
- Shadow Word: Pain on every mob the Warlock has put Corruption on.
- Vampiric Embrace on the main target, Mind Blast, then Mind Flay until it dies; wand the last few percent to save mana.
- If a mob turns on the Warlock, Shield them and Mind Flay the mob to slow it while the Voidwalker Torments it back.
- From level 40, stay in Shadowform for damage and leave it only to cast a real heal.
Mistakes that get the duo killed
- Healing the Voidwalker to full with big heals: the heal threat pulls every mob in the pack to you.
- Casting Mind Blast as the opener, before the Voidwalker has threat.
- Staying in Shadowform while the Warlock is low: you cannot cast healing spells in the form.
- Wasting Psychic Scream on a pull that Fear from the Warlock would have handled.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 40 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Spirit Tap 5/5 — Doubled Spirit and mana regeneration while casting after each kill: the core of chain pulling.
- Levels 15–16 · Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2/2 — Shadow Word: Pain lasts 6 sec longer, so one cast covers a whole mob.
- Levels 17–19 · Shadow Affinity 3/3 — 30% less threat from Shadow spells, which keeps mobs on the Voidwalker.
- Level 20 · Mind Flay 1/1 — A cheap channel that slows the target by 50%: your main filler and a way to slow a mob chasing the Warlock.
- Levels 21–25 · Improved Mind Blast 5/5 — Mind Blast every 5.5 sec instead of 8.
- Level 26 · Vampiric Embrace 1/1 — Your party is healed for 20% of your Shadow damage, so the Warlock and you recover while fighting.
- Levels 27–29 · Shadow Weaving 3/3 — Stacks up to 10% more Shadow damage for you. In WoW Forever it only boosts your own damage, not the Warlock’s.
- Level 30 · Silence 1/1 — Stops a caster mob for 5 sec, or interrupts a heal on a fleeing mob.
- Levels 31–32 · Improved Mind Flay 2/2 — 20% more Mind Flay damage and 10 yards more range, although its slow is weaker.
- Levels 33–34 · Shadow Focus 2/5 — More Shadow spell hit against mobs above your level.
- Levels 35–39 · Darkness 5/5 — +10% Shadow damage.
- Level 40 · Shadowform 1/1 — 10% more Shadow damage, Shadow spells at half mana cost and 15% less physical damage taken. You cannot cast heals in this form.
Where to level
Levels 15–20: The Barrens, Westfall, Silverpine Forest or Darkshore. Ruins of Lordaeron (15–20), Ragefire Chasm (13–19) and Hall of Thanes (13–18) are the first dungeons on this site’s chart; a DoT duo can join any group there as damage. Levels 20–30: Hillsbrad Foothills, Ashenvale, Redridge Mountains and Wetlands. Wailing Caverns (19–25) and The Deadmines (18–24) come first, then Shadowfang Keep (23–29) and Blackfathom Deeps (25–31). Levels 30–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Thousand Needles; Scarlet Monastery Graveyard (31–37) and Library (34–40), and The Drowned City (35–40) for trolls, naga and pirates off the Stranglethorn coast. Humanoid casters in that dungeon are where Silence earns its point.
Where the duo struggles
- Fast melee packs reach the casters before the DoTs have done anything. Pull with Fear on the second mob and Psychic Scream as the last resort, not the first.
- Bosses and elites outlast Voidwalker threat. Use Sacrifice’s shield and Power Word: Shield in turn instead of both at once.
- Undead and elementals are fine, but mobs that are immune to Fear or Shadow effects are much slower to kill.
- Shadow Weaving in WoW Forever only raises the Priest’s own Shadow damage, so do not expect it to boost the Warlock as it did in Classic.
