Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The group plan follows how cleave groups played in Classic, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.
The group at a glance
Spell Cleave for levels 15–40: a Protection Paladin, three Frost Mages and a Holy Priest.
Spell cleave trades single-target power for very large pulls. The Paladin gathers several packs and holds them in Consecration, three Frost Mages keep the whole pack slowed inside overlapping Blizzards, and the Priest keeps the Paladin standing. Nothing is killed one by one: the pack melts together, and the group moves straight on to the next one.
| Role | Spec | Job in the pull |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | Protection Paladin | Gathers packs, holds them in Consecration, taunts runners back with Judgement |
| DPS | Frost Mage | Blizzard on the tank, first Frost Nova when a mob breaks |
| DPS | Frost Mage | Blizzard, holds the second Frost Nova |
| DPS | Frost Mage | Blizzard, Cone of Cold on low mobs from level 30 |
| Healer | Holy Priest | Keeps the Paladin alive, Holy Nova when mages take splash damage |
Every spec in the table links to its own guide with talents for that slot.
How the spell cleave plays
- Before Blizzard (Classic trains it at level 20): play a normal group. The Paladin pulls one or two packs, the mages Frostbolt the kill target and use Frost Nova on anything that runs for them. Treat these levels as practice for positioning.
- From Improved Blizzard on: the Paladin gathers two or three packs and stops in a corner or doorway so the mobs stack on one spot. Consecration goes down first.
- Stagger the damage: the first mage starts Blizzard after two Consecration ticks, the other two follow one after another. Frost Channeling cuts Frost threat by 30%, but three mages at once still pull aggro from a fresh tank.
- Freeze rotation: only one mage uses Frost Nova at a time. Mage 1 novas when a mob breaks towards the casters, mage 2 holds theirs for the next break, mage 3 finishes low mobs with Cone of Cold from level 30.
- Drink together: the whole group drinks after every one or two big pulls. A half-mana mage team cannot finish a large pack, and a pack that survives is how spell cleave wipes.
Your job as Frost Mage
You are one of three damage engines. Your damage only works if the pack stays on the Paladin, so threat and timing matter more than raw numbers. Stand behind the tank in a spread line, never between the tank and a wall, and agree before the run which mage uses Frost Nova first.
Pull by pull
- Wait for two Consecration ticks before the first Blizzard, then start yours in the order you agreed.
- Place Blizzard centred on the Paladin, not on the mob you are looking at.
- If a mob breaks towards the casters and it is your turn, Frost Nova and step back; otherwise keep channeling.
- From level 30, finish mobs below 20% health with Cone of Cold instead of another full Blizzard.
- Call your mana: at 30% say so, the group drinks together.
Mistakes that wipe the group
- Three Blizzards in the same second on a fresh pull: the pack turns on the mages.
- Two mages Frost Nova at once, leaving nothing for the next break.
- Standing inside the pack’s melee range to reach the edge of Blizzard: Arctic Reach gives you the extra range instead.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 40 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Improved Frostbolt 5/5 — Faster Frostbolts for the levels before Blizzard, when pulls are still small.
- Levels 15–17 · Permafrost 3/3 — Chills last 3 sec longer and slow 10% more, so the pack crawls inside Blizzard.
- Levels 18–19 · Improved Frost Nova 2/2 — 4 sec shorter Frost Nova cooldown, so the three-mage rotation always has one ready.
- Levels 20–22 · Improved Blizzard 3/3 — Blizzard slows everything inside it by 65%. This is the core of spell cleave: take it as soon as the row opens.
- Levels 23–25 · Frost Channeling 3/3 — 15% cheaper Frost spells and 30% less Frost threat. Mana and threat are exactly what limits a cleave pull.
- Levels 26–27 · Arctic Reach 2/2 — 20% more Blizzard range and Frost Nova / Cone of Cold radius: stand further back and still hit the pack.
- Level 28 · Ice Block 1/1 — Survive a pull that went wrong while the Paladin taunts the pack back.
- Level 29 · Piercing Ice 1/3 — +6% Frost damage.
- Levels 30–32 · Improved Cone of Cold 3/3 — +35% Cone of Cold damage to finish a low pack instantly.
- Level 33 · Cold Snap 1/1 — Resets all your other Frost cooldowns: a second Frost Nova or Ice Block when a pull goes bad. Also required for Ice Barrier.
- Levels 34–35 · Piercing Ice 3/3 — finish the talent.
- Levels 36–38 · Elemental Precision 3/5 — +Hit so chills and Frost Nova are not resisted by higher-level mobs.
- Level 39 · Frostbite 1/3 — A chance for chills to freeze. One point is a cheap bonus with three Blizzards running.
- Level 40 · Ice Barrier 1/1 — An instant absorb shield. While it holds, damage cannot interrupt or delay your casts, so a mob on you no longer stops your Blizzard.
Dungeons by level
Every WoW Forever dungeon that overlaps levels 15–40. Dungeons marked New were added in WoW Forever; the rest are the original Classic dungeons.
| Levels | Dungeon | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 13–18 | Hall of Thanes (New) | Burial chambers beneath Ironforge. |
| 13–19 | Ragefire Chasm | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 15–20 | Ruins of Lordaeron (New) | Scourge forces in the ruined city. |
| 18–24 | The Deadmines | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 19–25 | Wailing Caverns | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 23–29 | Shadowfang Keep | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 24–29 | Excavation Site (New) | Rogue Titan constructs above Whelgar’s Excavation in the Wetlands. |
| 25–31 | Blackfathom Deeps | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 26–32 | The Stockade | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 28–33 | City of Dalaran (New) | Constructs, broken enchantments and demons; a wider city layout. |

| 31–37 | Gnomeregan | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 34–40 | Scarlet Monastery Library | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 35–40 | The Drowned City (New) | Trolls, naga and pirates off the Stranglethorn coast. |
| 37–43 | Scarlet Monastery Armory | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 38–44 | Razorfen Downs | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 39–45 | Scarlet Monastery Cathedral | Original Classic dungeon. |
| 40–55 | Krol’dok Stronghold (New) | New WoW Forever dungeon. |
Use Hall of Thanes and Ruins of Lordaeron to learn the pull rhythm with small groups. The cleave gets strong once all three mages have Improved Blizzard, so plan your longest dungeon sessions from the mid-20s. The Excavation Site in the Wetlands is full of Titan constructs; pull a single construct first and check whether chills and Frost Nova hold it before gathering a whole room.
Where the group struggles
- Casters that stay at range do not stack into Blizzard. The Paladin breaks line of sight around a corner so they walk into the pack.
- Bosses are single target. Mages switch to Frostbolt, the Paladin keeps the boss turned away, and the Priest heals efficiently instead of spamming.
- Mana is the limit of every pull. Skip a pack rather than start one at half mana.
- Immune or fear-heavy mobs break the model. Kill them first with normal single-target play.
