WoW Forever's PvP ranks run to 14, with a weekly cap and epics built from upgrade tokens

When we first wrote about Forever PvP in September, Blizzard had not shared rank thresholds, weekly caps or whether Honor decays. Two of those are now answered. Progression splits into Honor, the currency, and Rank Points, which carry you through the original fourteen ranks to High Warlord or Grand Marshal, with a weekly cap. Honor buys a blue set, and each epic piece is that blue piece plus an Emboldened Seal with its own rank requirement.

When we covered Forever’s PvP progression in September, we ended on a list of things Blizzard had not said: rank thresholds, weekly caps, and whether Honor decays. Two of the three now have answers, and the gearing path turned out to be the real change.

Two tracks, not one

Classic ran everything through one number. Forever splits it:

  • Honor is the currency. It comes from killing players, finishing battlegrounds and completing PvP quests, and it pays extra in whichever battleground is in its holiday week.
  • Rank Points are the progression. They come from the same activities, with the same holiday-week boost, and they move you up the original fourteen ranks toward High Warlord for the Horde or Grand Marshal for the Alliance.

Ranks have a weekly cap. That answers the September question directly: you cannot rush the ladder in a weekend, but the cap is also what makes it finishable, since the original system’s grind came from competing against other players’ totals rather than against a number.

Blizzard says nothing about decay, so that question stays open.

Alterac Valley is no longer the efficient choice

One line in the announcement matters more than its length suggests: Honor gains were reviewed across every battleground so the rates are consistent, specifically so players do not feel pushed into Alterac Valley for efficiency.

Anyone who played Classic PvP knows why that is in there. AV farming was the rational play and it emptied the other maps for everyone else. Fixing it at the source rather than nerfing one map is the better version of that decision.

The epic set is an upgrade, not a second purchase

This is the part that is genuinely different from Classic. Honor buys two sets, blue and epic — but the epic piece is not sold outright:

  1. Buy the blue piece with Honor.
  2. Buy an Emboldened Seal, which has its own rank requirement.
  3. The Seal upgrades the blue piece into the epic one.

So your blue set is not wasted progress the moment you outrank it, which is exactly what happened in Classic. It is the base your epic set is built on.

Blizzard also filled gaps for specs that had nothing to buy. The named example: Shaman now have healer, melee and caster PvP sets, where Classic gave them one set to share between three very different jobs.

What each rank unlocks

Rank Reward
1 Tabard
2 PvP trinket
3 Cloaks
4 Necklace
5 Combat potions
6 Tabard
7 Battle standard
8 Epic bracers and belt upgrade tokens
9 Epic boots upgrade token
10 Epic gloves upgrade token
11 Mounts
12 Epic legs and shoulders upgrade tokens
13 Epic chest and helm upgrade tokens
14 Epic weapons

Read it as a plan rather than a list. Rank 2 is the PvP trinket, which is the single most valuable item on the table for anyone who fights other players at all. Rank 11 is mounts, which arrives before most of the epic armour. And the weapons sit at 14, the top, which keeps the hardest reward at the end of the ladder where Classic had it.

Your progress lives in the Character pane under a Player vs Player tab, showing your rank, your current Rank Points and what you can buy at that rank.

Seasons tie PvP into the Legacy system

Each PvP season carries a journey of weekly tasks. Completing them grants Honor and Rank Points, and three tasks each season also grant a Legacy Point.

That last bit is the quiet one. Because those tasks hang off the Legacy system, they stay available in later seasons — so a player who skipped a season has not lost those points permanently. It also means PvP is now a route to Legacy progression for people who never set foot in a raid. Our guide to earning Legacy points is being checked against this.

Still unanswered

  • Whether Honor decays, the one September question Blizzard did not touch.
  • The actual numbers: what the weekly cap is, how many Rank Points a rank costs, and what the blue pieces price at.
  • How the seasons line up with the patch cadence.

The first new battleground has its own details now too: Darkspear Islands is a 15 against 15 for levels 30 to 60. Our PvP page carries the confirmed list.
