The duo at a glance

Priest & Shaman Duo for levels 10–30: an Enhancement Shaman in melee and a Discipline Priest shielding and wanding.

A Horde duo that trades raw kill speed for almost no downtime and very few deaths. The Enhancement Shaman fights in melee with Rockbiter or Flametongue and a shield of totems, the Discipline Priest keeps Power Word: Shield on the Shaman and wands the target. Both classes can heal, so a bad pull rarely ends in a corpse run: the Priest heals, the Shaman drops Healing Stream Totem and throws Healing Waves between swings if needed. By level 30 the Shaman has Flurry and Spirit Weapons, and the Priest has Penance, which heals or damages.

Role Spec Job
Healer Discipline Priest Power Word: Shield on the Shaman, Shadow Word: Pain and wand, Penance heals from level 30
DPS Enhancement Shaman Pulls, melees with weapon imbues and totems, Earth Shock on casters, backup Healing Waves

Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.

How the priest & shaman duo plays

  1. Totems first: the Shaman places Strength of Earth or Stoneskin Totem where the fight will happen, then pulls with a Lightning Bolt or Earth Shock and backs up onto the totems.
  2. Shield on the pull: the Priest casts Power Word: Shield on the Shaman as the mob arrives. The shield absorbs the first hits, and threat from it is shared across every mob the Shaman fights.
  3. Wand and DoT: the Priest keeps Shadow Word: Pain on the target and wands from maximum range. Wand Specialization makes the wand a real damage source for these levels.
  4. Shaman holds threat: with Spirit Weapons at 30, Rockbiter Weapon raises the Shaman’s threat. Use it on double pulls, Flametongue on single mobs.
  5. Two healers in a pinch: the Priest heals, the Shaman drops Healing Stream Totem and Earth Shocks a casting mob. Neither player should need to drink more often than once every few pulls.

Your job as Discipline Priest

Your Shaman takes every hit, so your job is to make those hits not matter. Shield them before the damage starts, keep Shadow Word: Pain and your wand going, and only cast a real heal when shields and Renew are not enough. Discipline suits this: Twin Disciplines strengthens every instant spell you use, Soul Warding lets you shield more often, and Meditation keeps your mana ticking while you do it. When you have spare mana, Smite is fine, but the wand is your cheap damage.

Pull by pull

  • Power Word: Fortitude and Inner Fire on before the pull; Power Word: Shield on the Shaman as the mob reaches them.
  • Shadow Word: Pain on the target, then wand from maximum range.
  • Renew on the Shaman when their health drops below about 70%; a full heal only when a double pull goes bad.
  • From level 30, Penance on the Shaman when a pull spikes, or on the mob when the Shaman is safe.
  • Shield yourself before drinking if something might wander into you.

Mistakes that get the duo killed

  • Healing the Shaman to full between hits: heal threat on a single-mob pull pulls the mob off them.
  • Casting Smite until you are out of mana, then having nothing for the next pull.
  • Shielding the Shaman before they have pulled, so the shield expires before the mob arrives.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 30 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–11 · Wand Specialization 2/2 — 26% more wand damage from only two points; the wand is your main damage at these levels.
  • Levels 12–14 · Twin Disciplines 3/5 — 5% more damage and healing from your instant spells, such as Shadow Word: Pain and Renew, which you cast on every pull.
  • Levels 15–17 · Improved Power Word: Shield 3/3 — Up to 21% more absorption on the shield you cast every pull.
  • Levels 18–19 · Twin Disciplines 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 20–22 · Meditation 3/3 — Half of your mana regeneration continues while casting, so heals and Shadow Word: Pain do not stop your regen.
  • Levels 23–24 · Mental Agility 2/3 — Cheaper instant spells and Smite.
  • Level 25 · Soul Warding 1/1 — Shorter Power Word: Shield cooldown and a cheaper shield.
  • Level 26 · Mental Agility 3/3 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 27–29 · Mental Strength 3/5 — More Intellect, a larger mana pool for long chains.
  • Level 30 · Penance 1/1 — An instant volley that heals an ally or damages an enemy: an emergency heal and a strong opener in one button.

Where to level

Levels 10–15: finish Durotar, Mulgore or Tirisfal Glades together and move to The Barrens or Silverpine Forest. Levels 13–20: Ragefire Chasm (13–19) under Orgrimmar, and Ruins of Lordaeron (15–20), which this site’s dungeon chart describes as Scourge forces in the ruined city, are the first dungeons; fill three more slots with the duo as healer and melee. Levels 20–25: southern Barrens, Silverpine Forest and Hillsbrad Foothills. Wailing Caverns (19–25) is close to the Crossroads and has several Horde quests. Levels 25–30: Ashenvale, Stonetalon Mountains and Thousand Needles; Shadowfang Keep (23–29) and Blackfathom Deeps (25–31) with a group. The Shaman can tank normal pulls there with Rockbiter and the Priest can heal.

Where the duo struggles

  • Kill speed is lower than a pure damage duo, especially before Flurry. Take kill quests with elite mobs, where the duo’s safety matters more than speed.
  • Weakened Soul stops a second shield for 15 sec. On double pulls, shield once and rely on Renew and Healing Stream Totem after that.
  • Casters and runners force the Shaman to Earth Shock and chase, and this Priest build has no slow. Pull casters around a corner and save Earth Shock for the runner at low health.
  • Mana runs out on long chains because both players spend it on healing. Stop for a drink together rather than one at a time.
