WoW Forever's Hidden Library: 40 Books

Datamined, not seen in gameChecked on 1.60.1.69977 beta

The beta files list a library of 40 books and a set of rewards for turning them in. Players have already reported finding hidden books that hand out strong items while leveling, and this is the system behind them. Nothing here is announced by Blizzard, and the client does not say where a single book lies.

What the books are

The 40 titles read like a library catalogue rather than quest items: Archmage Antonidas: The Unabridged Autobiography, A Study of the Light, Crimes Against Anatomy, Bewitchments and Glamours, Basilisks: Should Petrification be Feared?

They are ordinary readable objects, which is why they are easy to walk past. The reward tiers are what turn them into a collection worth tracking.

Why the rewards matter while leveling

Look at the item levels. A neck at 25 and rings at 40 arrive exactly where quest rewards get thin, and the item level 58 tier is close to what a fresh level 60 character wears.

The 58 tier also covers slots that are hard to fill before raiding: two shields, an off-hand and two necks, each aimed at a different role.

What Blizzard has said

Nothing, directly. What is on the record is the design behind it: the team has said it deliberately kept many items out of the datamined files so players would find them in the world, and that an item's stats stay hidden until it drops for someone on your ruleset.

A library of unmarked books fits that approach exactly, which is also why a complete list of locations may never be datamined.

What we have not confirmed

  • The client places none of the books, so every location anyone has is from walking the world.
  • Which turn-in count unlocks the higher tiers is not in the files. The quests that hand them over are server side.
  • The list may be incomplete: a book nobody has turned in yet would still sit unread in the table.
