The rewards

What the books are

They are ordinary readable objects, which is why they are easy to walk past. The reward tiers are what turn them into a collection worth tracking.

The titles read like a library catalogue rather than quest items, and most of them lean arcane: research journals, spell primers, a few bestiary entries and a handful of jokes. If the collection is aimed at anyone in particular, it is a caster.

All 40 titles, as the client lists them

This is the complete library table from the current build, in the order the client stores it. It is the one part of the collection that is fully knowable right now: the titles are in the files, the locations are not.

Use it as a checklist. If you have read a title that is not on this list, the list is short rather than wrong, and we would like to hear about it.

Where to look, given that the files do not say

There is no location data to datamine, so this section is reasoning rather than a route, and we mark it as such. Two things in the titles point somewhere.

Several titles name a place or a person tied to one: Rumi of Gnomeregan, Stonewrought Design (the Loch Modan dam), Nar'thalas Almanac, The Dalaran Digest, Archmage Theocritus' Research Journal and Archmage Antonidas' autobiography both point at Dalaran, and Northern Kalimdor - A Comprehensive Guide names a region. A book about a place sitting in that place is the obvious guess, and it is how the found ones have turned up so far.

The rest cluster by school: Necromancy 101, Sanguine Sorcery and Scourge: Undead Menace or Misunderstood? read like Undercity and Scarlet Monastery shelves, while Demons and You and A Luddite's Guide to Caring for Your Demonic Pet read like warlock ground.

• Check bookshelves and tables inside buildings rather than open world objects. The found books have been clickable props indoors.
• Inns, libraries, mage quarters and the upper floors of quest hubs are worth a lap when you are already in town.
• Dungeons count. Scarlet Monastery has an actual Library wing, and it is the most on-the-nose candidate in the game.

A possible connection: the Comprehension skill

Forever's files carry a thirteenth profession line called Comprehension, a research skill whose abilities are flagged for Mages. Two of them mention a library directly: Research is described as researching the magical arts with the help of a library, and Study performs spell research and requires a suitable library.

Whether that library means these 40 books or a physical room in the world is not something the files answer. We are flagging it because the overlap is hard to ignore, not because it is established. If the two systems are connected, a book collection would stop being a jewellery errand and start being a Mage progression path.

Why the rewards matter while leveling

Look at the item levels. A neck at 23 and rings at 35 arrive where quest rewards get thin, and the item level 58 groups are close to what a fresh level 60 character wears.

Those 58 groups also cover slots that are hard to fill before raiding: two shields, an off-hand and two necks, each aimed at a different role.

The rewards were re-tuned since September

The numbers above are not the ones we first recorded. In the 1.60.1.69977 files the ten-book necklaces carried 6 Stamina and 4 Spirit or Agility at item level 25, and the twenty-book rings sat at item level 40 with a third stat on Field Researcher's Loop.

The current build halves the first tier and lowers every tier's item level. The top groups were rebuilt around the role they are for rather than round Classic stat blocks: the off-hand now carries fire spell damage, and Crest of Elucidation states its healing outright.

Treat all of these as tuning values. They already moved once during the beta and may still change at launch on November 4.

What Blizzard has said

Nothing, directly. What is on the record is the design behind it: the team has said it deliberately kept many items out of the datamined files so players would find them in the world, and that an item's stats stay hidden until it drops for someone on your ruleset.

A library of unmarked books fits that approach exactly, which is also why a complete list of locations may never be datamined.

What we have not confirmed

• The client places none of the books, so every location anyone has is from walking the world.
• Which turn-in count unlocks the higher tiers is not in the files. The quests that hand them over are server side.
• The list may be incomplete: a book nobody has turned in yet would still sit unread in the table.
• The reward stats are beta tuning values. They were cut once already between builds 69977 and 70205.
