WoW Forever's Rule-Breaking Items
Reported by testersChecked on 1.60.1.69913 beta
Once testers reached the level 20 cap and cleared the dungeons properly, the items that separate WoW Forever from a remake started turning up. These are not stat upgrades. They change what a character is allowed to do.
The axe that mines for you
An axe that drops from an enemy in the Deadmines lets you mine ore without the Mining profession, roughly 30 times before it is used up.
The usual Classic pattern is one gathering profession feeding one crafting profession. If a consumable tool gathers for you, and you can collect more than one, you can run two crafting professions and still have materials. That was close to impossible in 2004, and it changes how an alt roster is planned.
The sword for battle mages
The Coldflame Saber, from Shadowfang Keep, makes your melee attacks deal fire damage to frozen targets.
Read as a Mage that is an instruction: freeze the target, then hit it. Classic mages carried a weapon for its stats and never swung it. This is the same thinking as Season of Discovery, where mages could tank, arriving in a much smaller dose.
What it means for launch
Three habits worth carrying into November 4.
- Do not plan professions around Classic rules. A tool that gathers for you changes the maths.
- Read dungeon blues properly. A weapon with the right effect can beat a better item, which is what Blizzard said it wanted.
- Open books and click strange objects. Some of them pay out, as the hidden library shows.
What we have not confirmed
- Exact drop rates, item names for the axe and its charge count come from testers, not from patch notes.
- Beta items are tuned and removed between builds. Treat both as a preview rather than a launch plan.
