The duo at a glance
Mage & Rogue Duo for levels 20–40: a Frost Mage who freezes and shatters and a Combat Rogue who holds small packs with Evasion and Blade Flurry.
Mage and Rogue is a damage duo with a lot of control and no healer. It works because both classes are very good at deciding which mobs are fighting and which are not: the Rogue opens with Sap or Cheap Shot, the Mage Polymorphs the second mob, and the pair kills one target very fast. When a pull grows, the Rogue pops Evasion and gathers the extra mobs while the Mage freezes them with Frost Nova and shatters them. The Mage conjures food and water for both, so the Rogue’s usual downtime after each fight shrinks to a few seconds. The duo works for Alliance and Horde and peaks between 20 and 40, when Blizzard, Cone of Cold, Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush arrive.
| Role | Spec | Job |
|---|---|---|
| DPS | Frost Mage | Polymorph, Frostbolt on the kill target, Frost Nova and shatter combos on packs, food and water |
| DPS | Combat Rogue | Sap and Cheap Shot openers, holds small packs with Evasion, Blade Flurry cleave and interrupts |
Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.
How the mage & rogue duo plays
- Decide the pull before it starts. The Rogue saps the humanoid that should wait, the Mage keeps Polymorph ready for the second mob, and the Rogue opens on the kill target with Cheap Shot.
- Kill one at a time. The Mage Frostbolts the Rogue’s target. Frost Channeling keeps the Mage’s threat lower, and the Rogue uses Gouge or Kidney Shot if the mob turns to the Mage.
- Freeze and shatter. When two or three mobs are on the Rogue, the Mage steps close and Frost Novas; frozen mobs take Ice Lance and Cone of Cold with Shatter’s extra crit. The Rogue backs out of the Nova before it lands, so they are not trapped in melee.
- Evasion is the tank cooldown. Endurance cuts Evasion’s cooldown by 60% and Restless Blades shortens it further with every finisher, so the Rogue can hold small packs every few pulls.
- Eat and drink together. Mage food heals the Rogue; the Mage drinks at the same time. Neither of you should start a pull the other is not ready for.
Your job as Frost Mage
You are the control and half the damage. Before every pull, know which mob you will Polymorph and where you will stand. On single targets, Frostbolt what the Rogue is hitting. When a pull grows, your job changes: freeze everything next to the Rogue with Frost Nova and turn frozen mobs into shatter crits. WoW Forever adds Ice Lance to the Frost tree, which deals 300% damage to frozen targets, and Fingers of Frost, which can treat your next spell as if the target were frozen. Together with Shatter and a point of Frostbite, a two- or three-mob pull dies inside one Frost Nova. You also keep the Rogue fed: conjured food is their health bar between fights.
Pull by pull
- Agree the pull: Rogue saps one, you mark your Polymorph target, the Rogue opens with Cheap Shot on the kill target.
- Polymorph the second mob as soon as it moves, then Frostbolt the Rogue’s target.
- If a third mob joins, walk into range and Frost Nova once the Rogue steps back, then Ice Lance or Cone of Cold the frozen mobs.
- When your Fingers of Frost proc is up, spend it on Ice Lance before it expires.
- Refresh Polymorph before it breaks; the sheep is the next kill target.
Mistakes that get the duo killed
- Frost Nova while the Rogue is still in melee: the mobs are frozen next to them and the Rogue cannot move away for a free shatter.
- Blizzard on a pack the Rogue is not holding: the chill pulls threat and every mob walks to you.
- Hitting the Sapped or Polymorphed mob with Blizzard or Cone of Cold.
- Letting the Rogue start a pull while you drink. They have no heals; you are the escape plan.
Talent order by level
One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 40 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.
- Levels 10–14 · Improved Frostbolt 5/5 — Faster Frostbolts on the Rogue’s kill target, your main damage in single-target pulls.
- Levels 15–16 · Permafrost 2/3 — Longer and stronger chills: a slowed mob that turns to you never reaches you.
- Levels 17–18 · Improved Frost Nova 2/2 — 4 sec shorter Frost Nova cooldown: more freezes, so more shatter combos per pull.
- Level 19 · Frostbite 1/3 — A chance for your chills to freeze the target. One point is enough to turn some Frostbolts into free shatter windows.
- Levels 20–22 · Improved Blizzard 3/3 — Blizzard slows everything inside it by 65%, for the packs the Rogue gathers under Evasion.
- Levels 23–24 · Frost Channeling 2/3 — Cheaper Frost spells and 30% less Frost threat, which matters when your partner is not a tank.
- Level 25 · Ice Lance 1/1 — Forever’s instant Frost spell: little damage normally, 300% more against frozen targets. Cast it right after Frost Nova.
- Levels 26–30 · Shatter 5/5 — +50% critical strike chance against frozen targets. Ice Lance and Cone of Cold on a frozen pack crit almost every time.
- Levels 31–33 · Improved Cone of Cold 3/3 — +35% Cone of Cold damage, the finisher on a frozen pack.
- Level 34 · Cold Snap 1/1 — Resets Frost Nova and Ice Block: a second freeze when a pull grows. Required for Ice Barrier.
- Level 35 · Frost Channeling 3/3 — finish the talent.
- Level 36 · Ice Block 1/1 — Survive the mob that got past the Rogue while they Gouge or Blind it.
- Level 37 · Permafrost 3/3 — finish the talent.
- Levels 38–39 · Fingers of Frost 2/2 — Chills can make your next spell treat the target as frozen: Shatter crit and Ice Lance bonus without Frost Nova.
- Level 40 · Ice Barrier 1/1 — An absorb shield that also stops damage from delaying your casts, so a mob on you does not stop your Frostbolt.
Where to level
20–30: Alliance levels through Redridge, Duskwood, Darkshore and Ashenvale; Horde through the Barrens, Silverpine Forest, Hillsbrad Foothills and Ashenvale. Humanoid camps are the best targets because Sap and Polymorph both work on them. Wailing Caverns (19–25), Shadowfang Keep (23–29) and Blackfathom Deeps (25–31) are good dungeon breaks with a group: the Rogue opens locked chests and the Mage’s Polymorph is welcome crowd control. 30–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Thousand Needles (Horde) or the Wetlands and Hillsbrad (Alliance). The Rogue can pick locks for Mage food money, and the Mage’s Cone of Cold arrives in Classic at 26. Razorfen Kraul (30–36), Scarlet Monastery Graveyard (31–37), Gnomeregan (31–37), Scarlet Monastery Library (34–40) and The Drowned City (35–40) fill the late 30s in a group.
Where the duo struggles
- No healer. Bandages and Mage food are all the healing you have. A pull that needs Evasion, Frost Nova and Ice Block at once should have been skipped.
- Non-humanoid packs cannot be sapped, and Polymorph only works on humanoids and beasts. Undead and elemental camps are pulls to take one mob at a time.
- Casters at range ignore the Rogue’s melee and hit the Mage. Kick and Counterspell are your answers; decide who interrupts which caster.
- Big AoE pulls are possible but fragile: without a tank, one missed Frost Nova means the pack is on the Mage. Keep AoE to three or four mobs.
