Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The leveling plan follows the proven Classic leveling builds, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.

The duo at a glance

Mage & Rogue Duo for levels 20–40: a Frost Mage who freezes and shatters and a Combat Rogue who holds small packs with Evasion and Blade Flurry.

Mage and Rogue is a damage duo with a lot of control and no healer. It works because both classes are very good at deciding which mobs are fighting and which are not: the Rogue opens with Sap or Cheap Shot, the Mage Polymorphs the second mob, and the pair kills one target very fast. When a pull grows, the Rogue pops Evasion and gathers the extra mobs while the Mage freezes them with Frost Nova and shatters them. The Mage conjures food and water for both, so the Rogue’s usual downtime after each fight shrinks to a few seconds. The duo works for Alliance and Horde and peaks between 20 and 40, when Blizzard, Cone of Cold, Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush arrive.

Role Spec Job
DPS Frost Mage Polymorph, Frostbolt on the kill target, Frost Nova and shatter combos on packs, food and water
DPS Combat Rogue Sap and Cheap Shot openers, holds small packs with Evasion, Blade Flurry cleave and interrupts

Both specs link to their own guide with the talents for that half of the duo.

How the mage & rogue duo plays

  1. Decide the pull before it starts. The Rogue saps the humanoid that should wait, the Mage keeps Polymorph ready for the second mob, and the Rogue opens on the kill target with Cheap Shot.
  2. Kill one at a time. The Mage Frostbolts the Rogue’s target. Frost Channeling keeps the Mage’s threat lower, and the Rogue uses Gouge or Kidney Shot if the mob turns to the Mage.
  3. Freeze and shatter. When two or three mobs are on the Rogue, the Mage steps close and Frost Novas; frozen mobs take Ice Lance and Cone of Cold with Shatter’s extra crit. The Rogue backs out of the Nova before it lands, so they are not trapped in melee.
  4. Evasion is the tank cooldown. Endurance cuts Evasion’s cooldown by 60% and Restless Blades shortens it further with every finisher, so the Rogue can hold small packs every few pulls.
  5. Eat and drink together. Mage food heals the Rogue; the Mage drinks at the same time. Neither of you should start a pull the other is not ready for.

Your job as Combat Rogue

You open every pull and you are the closest thing this duo has to a tank. Sap the mob that should wait, Cheap Shot the one that dies first, and keep it looking at you while the Mage Frostbolts it. When extra mobs join, Evasion and hold them together so the Mage can freeze the pile. The Forever Combat tree makes that easier: Endurance cuts Sprint and Evasion cooldowns by 60%, and Restless Blades takes 2 sec per combo point off Evasion, Sprint, Vanish, Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush every time you use a damaging finisher. Hack and Slash is Forever’s weapon specialization: extra attacks with swords and axes, crit with daggers and fist weapons, armor penetration with maces.

Pull by pull

  • Stealth in, Sap the mob that should wait, then Cheap Shot the kill target and build combo points.
  • Slice and Dice early, Eviscerate at five points: every finisher shortens Evasion through Restless Blades.
  • If a second mob comes, the Mage sheeps it. If a third comes, Evasion, Blade Flurry from 30, and step out before the Mage’s Frost Nova.
  • Kick the caster the Mage cannot Counterspell.
  • Adrenaline Rush from 40 on the pull that has to die fast, not on a single mob.

Mistakes that get the duo killed

  • Blade Flurry next to a sheep or a sapped mob: the extra hit wakes it up.
  • Standing still inside Frost Nova range: frozen mobs next to you cannot be shattered safely and you cannot kite.
  • Opening before the Mage is in position and has mana. You have no healer; the Mage is the plan when things go wrong.
  • Saving Vanish for a perfect moment. If the Mage is about to die, Vanish only saves you, so use Gouge or Blind on the mob first.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 40 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–11 · Improved Sinister Strike 2/2 — 5 Energy cheaper Sinister Strike: more combo points per fight.
  • Levels 12–14 · Improved Eviscerate 3/3 — +21% Eviscerate damage, your finisher on every kill.
  • Levels 15–17 · Precision 3/3 — +3% hit with attacks and poisons; it also opens Dual Wield Specialization.
  • Levels 18–19 · Deflection 2/3 — More parry while you hold mobs under Evasion.
  • Levels 20–21 · Endurance 2/2 — 60% shorter Sprint and Evasion cooldowns: Evasion is ready for most multi-mob pulls instead of once a session.
  • Level 22 · Deflection 3/3 — finish the talent.
  • Levels 23–24 · Lightning Reflexes 2/5 — More dodge for the moments you hold two or three mobs without a healer.
  • Levels 25–27 · Dual Wield Specialization 3/5 — +25% off-hand damage at five points.
  • Level 28 · Restless Blades 1/1 — Damaging finishers take 2 sec per combo point off Evasion, Sprint, Vanish, Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush.
  • Level 29 · Dual Wield Specialization 4/5 — finish the talent.
  • Level 30 · Blade Flurry 1/1 — 20% faster attacks and every swing hits a second nearby mob for 15 sec. Use it when the Mage is not holding a sheep next to you.
  • Levels 31–35 · Hack and Slash 5/5 — Forever’s weapon specialization: extra attacks with swords and axes, crit with daggers and fist weapons.
  • Levels 36–38 · Aggression 3/3 — +6% Sinister Strike, Backstab and Eviscerate damage.
  • Level 39 · Dual Wield Specialization 5/5 — finish the talent.
  • Level 40 · Adrenaline Rush 1/1 — Double Energy regeneration for 15 sec at 40: a burst for the pull that goes wrong.

Where to level

20–30: Alliance levels through Redridge, Duskwood, Darkshore and Ashenvale; Horde through the Barrens, Silverpine Forest, Hillsbrad Foothills and Ashenvale. Humanoid camps are the best targets because Sap and Polymorph both work on them. Wailing Caverns (19–25), Shadowfang Keep (23–29) and Blackfathom Deeps (25–31) are good dungeon breaks with a group: the Rogue opens locked chests and the Mage’s Polymorph is welcome crowd control. 30–40: Arathi Highlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace and Thousand Needles (Horde) or the Wetlands and Hillsbrad (Alliance). The Rogue can pick locks for Mage food money, and the Mage’s Cone of Cold arrives in Classic at 26. Razorfen Kraul (30–36), Scarlet Monastery Graveyard (31–37), Gnomeregan (31–37), Scarlet Monastery Library (34–40) and The Drowned City (35–40) fill the late 30s in a group.

Where the duo struggles

  • No healer. Bandages and Mage food are all the healing you have. A pull that needs Evasion, Frost Nova and Ice Block at once should have been skipped.
  • Non-humanoid packs cannot be sapped, and Polymorph only works on humanoids and beasts. Undead and elemental camps are pulls to take one mob at a time.
  • Casters at range ignore the Rogue’s melee and hit the Mage. Kick and Counterspell are your answers; decide who interrupts which caster.
  • Big AoE pulls are possible but fragile: without a tank, one missed Frost Nova means the pack is on the Mage. Keep AoE to three or four mobs.
