Theorycrafted before the WoW Forever beta (September 17, 2026). The group plan follows how cleave groups played in Classic, the talents use the pre-release WoW Forever trees on this site, and ability levels quoted from Classic may differ in Forever. Expect updates once the beta is testable.

The group at a glance

Melee Burst for levels 40–60: a Fury Warrior tank, an Assassination Rogue, a Retribution Paladin, an Enhancement Shaman and a Restoration Shaman.

Melee burst does not try to kill whole packs at once. It kills one elite after another very quickly, which is what the humanoid and undead dungeons from level 50 onwards ask for. The Fury Warrior tanks with a shield and still hits hard enough to hold threat, the Rogue deletes the kill target with Mutilate and Seal Fate, the Paladin brings Consecration, Seal of Command and blessings, and two Shamans stack their totems for a melee group: Windfury and Strength of Earth from one, Mana Spring and Healing Stream from the other.

Role Spec Job in the pull
Tank Fury Warrior Tanks with a shield in Defensive Stance, Cleave and Bloodthirst threat, Last Stand
DPS Assassination Rogue Mutilate burst on the marked target, Kick on casters
DPS Retribution Paladin Consecration, Seal of Command, blessings, Repentance on a humanoid
DPS Enhancement Shaman Stormstrike, Windfury and Strength of Earth totems, Earth Shock interrupts
Healer Restoration Shaman Heals the melee stack, water and fire totems, Mana Tide Totem

Every spec in the table links to its own guide with talents for that slot.

How the melee burst plays

  1. Pull size: one pack at a time, two when it is weak trash. Kill order is marked before every pull: casters and healers first.
  2. Totems down first: the Enhancement Shaman places air and earth totems, the Restoration Shaman water and fire totems, both on the spot where the Warrior will stop.
  3. Opener: the Warrior charges in Defensive Stance with Vanguard and uses Thunder Clap and Cleave. The Paladin drops Consecration two seconds later for threat-safe area damage.
  4. Burst the kill target: the Rogue opens on the marked mob, the Shaman Stormstrikes it, the Paladin judges it. It should die in a few seconds, then everyone moves to the next mark.
  5. Cooldown turns: Death Wish, Rage of the Farseer and Mana Tide Totem go on the packs that matter; trash gets none of them.

Your job as Assassination Rogue

You kill the marked target. Mutilate awards two combo points, Seal Fate adds more on crits, and Venom raises your poison damage for a few seconds, so a single elite dies very quickly. Murder adds 4% damage against humanoids and giants, which covers most of Blackrock Depths and Dire Maul. Improved Kick makes you the group’s main interrupt.

Pull by pull

  • Poisons on both weapons before the run.
  • Wait for the Warrior’s Thunder Clap and first Cleave, then open on the marked mob from behind.
  • Mutilate to five combo points, Venom, then Eviscerate or Rupture depending on how long the mob will live.
  • Kick the first caster that starts casting; Improved Kick silences it for 2 sec.
  • Evasion if a mob turns on you; Endurance keeps its cooldown short.

Mistakes that wipe the group

  • Opening before the Warrior has threat: burst pulls aggro instantly.
  • Rupture on a mob that will die in three seconds.
  • Standing in front of the target where parries and frontal attacks hit you.

Talent order by level

One point per level from level 10. The talent tree above shows the finished level 60 build; use the level slider to see it at any level.

  • Levels 10–14 · Malice 5/5 — +5% critical strike chance for attacks and poisons.
  • Levels 15–17 · Ruthlessness 3/3 — Finishers can leave a combo point on the next target.
  • Levels 18–19 · Murder 2/2 — +4% damage against humanoids and giants.
  • Level 20 · Relentless Strikes 1/1 — Finishers refund Energy.
  • Levels 21–25 · Lethality 5/5 — Bigger critical strikes from your combo point attacks.
  • Levels 26–30 · Vile Poisons 5/5 — +20% poison damage.
  • Levels 31–35 · Improved Poisons 5/5 — Poisons apply more often and often keep their charges.
  • Level 36 · Venom 1/1 — A finisher that raises poison damage by 30% and poison chance by 10%.
  • Levels 37–41 · Seal Fate 5/5 — Crits from combo point attacks add an extra combo point.
  • Level 42 · Mutilate 1/1 — Hits with both weapons for two combo points, harder against poisoned targets: your main attack.
  • Levels 43–45 · Improved Eviscerate (Combat) 3/3 — +21% Eviscerate damage for mobs that will not live long enough for Rupture.
  • Levels 46–47 · Lightning Reflexes (Combat) 2/5 — +Dodge, and opens the Combat tree.
  • Levels 48–50 · Precision (Combat) 3/3 — +3% hit with attacks and poisons.
  • Levels 51–53 · Puncturing Wounds (Combat) 3/3 — +15% Mutilate critical strike chance, which Seal Fate turns into combo points.
  • Levels 54–56 · Deflection (Combat) 3/3 — +Parry for when a mob turns on you.
  • Levels 57–58 · Endurance (Combat) 2/2 — 60% shorter Evasion and Sprint cooldowns.
  • Levels 59–60 · Improved Kick (Combat) 2/2 — Kick also silences for 2 sec.

Uldaman and Krol’dok Stronghold at 40–50 are fine for learning the kill order. The group gets strong in Zul’Farrak, Alcaz Prison and Blackrock Depths, where most mobs are humanoids that take extra damage from the Rogue’s Murder talent. At 55–60 it suits Lower Blackrock Spire, Dire Maul and Stratholme: Crusade adds extra damage against undead and demons.

Where the group struggles

  • Large packs: without a mage, large pulls take too long. Pull smaller instead of hoping Consecration and Cleave carry it.
  • Casters at range do not come into melee. Kick, Repentance and line-of-sight pulls are the answers.
  • Tank Rage starts low on the first seconds of each pull. Everyone waits for the Warrior’s Thunder Clap and first Cleave.
  • Healing: four players stand in melee range. The Restoration Shaman needs Mana Tide Totem on every hard pack and the Paladin can Flash of Light in an emergency.
